The paper presents an investigation of the widely varying mechanical performance and behaviour of steel and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforced concrete beams using non-destructive techniques of Acoustic Emission (AE) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) under four-point bending. Laboratory experiments are performed on both differently reinforced concrete beams with 0.33%, 0.52% and 1.11% of tension reinforcement against balanced section. The results show that the ultimate load-carrying capacity increases with an increase in tensile reinforcement in both cases. In addition to that, AE waveform parameters of amplitude and number of AE hits successfully correlates and picks up the divergent mechanism of cracking initiation and progression of failure in steel reinforced and GFRP reinforced concrete beams. AE activity is about 20-30% more in GFRP-RC beams as compared to steel-RC beams. It was primarily due to the lower modulus of elasticity of GFRP bars leading to much larger ductility and deflections as compared to steel-RC beams. Furthermore, AE XY event plots and longitudinal strain profiles using DIC gives an online and real-time visual display of progressive AE activity and strains respectively to efficaciously depict the crack evolution and their advancement in steel-RC and GFRP-RC beams which show a close matching with the micro-and macro-cracks visually observed in the actual beams at various stages of loading.
The effectiveness of shear strengthening with glass fiber sheets on normal or low strength RC beams have been investigated experimentally. A design compressive strength of concrete of 13.5MPa has been planned considering the degradation state of the existing structure to be strengthened in this study. Also, concrete surface reinforcing agent was applied to increase bond capacity between concrete and GFRP sheets in case of low strength RC beams. Comparing the test results of low and normal strength beams strengthened with GFRP sheets indicated that total shear capacity of beams was decreased with concrete strength decreased, but the shear strengthening capacity of GFRP sheets are hardly affected by concrete strength. In addition, shear strengthening effects of RC beams strengthened with GFRP sheets can be estimated by $\rho_w{\cdot}f_w$ based on the maximum effective strain of FRP sheet proposed by ACI 440.2R recommendation.

This paper presents the experimental and numerical evaluations on the circular SFRC columns reinforced GFRP rebars under the axial compressive loading. The test programs were designed to inquire and compare the effects of different parameters on the columns' structural behavior by performing experiments and finite element modeling. The research variables were conventional concrete (CC), fiber concrete (FC), types of longitudinal steel/GFRP rebars, and different configurations of lateral rebars. A total of 16 specimens were manufactured and categorized into four groups based on different rebar-concrete arrangements including GRCC, GRFC, SRCC, and SRFC. Adding steel fibers (SFs) into the concrete, it was essential to modify the concrete damage plastic (CDP) model for FC columns presented in the finite element method (FEM) using ABAQUS 6.14 software. Failure modes of the columns were similar and results of peak loads and corresponding deflections of compression columns showed a suitable agreement in tests and numerical analysis. The behavior of GFRP-RC and steel-RC columns was relatively linear in the pre-peak branch, up to 80-85% of their ultimate axial compressive loads. The axial compressive loads of GRCC and GRFC columns were averagely 80.5% and 83.6% of axial compressive loads of SRCC and SRFC columns. Also, DIs of GRCC and GRFC columns were 7.4% and 12.9% higher than those of SRCC and SRFC columns. Partially, using SFs compensated up to 3.1%, the reduction of the compressive strength of the GFRP-RC columns as compared with the steel-RC columns. The effective parameters on increasing the DIs of columns were higher volumetric ratios (up to 12%), using SFs into concrete (up to 6.6%), and spiral (up to 5.5%). The results depicted that GFRP-RC columns had higher DIs and lower peak loads compared with steel-RC columns.
본 논문의 목적은 전단내력이 부족한 R/C보에 CFS(Carbon Fiber Sheets), CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic), GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics)를 이용해 전단보강을 할 경우에 보의 역학적 거동특성을 규명하기 위한 것이다.
This study focuses on shear strengthening performance of simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams bonded by glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) strips in different configuration, orientations and transverse steel reinforcement in different spacing. Eighteen RC T-beams of 2.5 m span are tested. Nine beams are used as control beam. The stirrups are provided in three different spacing such as without stirrups and with stirrups at a spacing of 200 mm and 300 mm. Another nine beams are used as strengthened beams. GFRP strips are bonded in shear zone in U-shape and side shape with two types of orientation of the strip at $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to the longitudinal axis of the beam for each type of stirrup spacing. The experimental result indicates that the beam strengthened with GFRP strips at $45^{\circ}$ orientation to the longitudinal axis of the beam are much more effective than $90^{\circ}$ orientation. Also as transverse steel increases, the effectiveness of the GFRP strips decreases.
In this study, strengthening effect of the deteriorated reinforced concrete T type bridge with epoxy-bonded glass fiber reinforced plates(GFRP) is experimentally investigated. This test make a comparison between before strengthened and after strengthened with GFRP structural behavior experimentally in the field. the results generally indicate that the flexural strength of strengthened RC T-type bridge is increased.
The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement in concrete structures has been on the rise due to its advantages over conventional steel reinforcement such as corrosion. Reinforcing steel corrosion has been the primary cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, resulting in tremendous annual repair costs. One application of FRP reinforcement to be further explored is its use in RC frames. Nonetheless, due to FRP's inherently elastic behavior, FRP-reinforced (FRP-RC) members exhibit low ductility and energy dissipation as well as different damage mechanisms. Furthermore, current design standards for FRP-RC structures do not address seismic design in which the beam-column joint is a key issue. During an earthquake, the safety of beam-column joints is essential to the whole structure integrity. Thus, research is needed to gain better understanding of the behavior of FRP-RC structures and their damage mechanisms under seismic loading. In this study, two full-scale beam-column joint specimens reinforced with steel and GFRP configurations were tested under quasi-static loading. The control steel-reinforced specimen was detailed according to current design code provisions. The GFRP-RC specimen was detailed in a similar scheme. The damage in the two specimens is characterized to compare their performance under simulated seismic loading.
This study evaluated the fire resisting capacity and post-fire serviceability of the concrete beams retrofitted by near surface mounted method(NSM) using GFRP plates. Main parameters in the test are grout materials and fire exposure. For the test, two types of grout materials between concrete substrate and GFRP plate were used; flame resisting epoxy and filling mortar. Four RC beam specimens were made and two of them were exposed to fire according to real scale fire curve proposed KS F 2257. After the fire exposure test, flexural test were performed to investigate the flexural performance of concrete beams including strength and deformation. From the test results, it was found that the beam retrofitted by NSM-GFRP presented higher flexural strength than that of the beam without retrofit, which indicates NSM-GFRP retrofit technologies is effective to maintain flexural strength even after fire exposure. In addition, the specimens grouted by epoxy showed good performance in strength but bad performance in ductility.
