  • Geologic field survey is very important for the high school students who take the courses of earth science under the 7th earth science curriculum, however actually it is very difficult for the students to survey in the field because of long time and distance, and expenses. To overcome these difficulties, this study focused on developing the web contents and teaching-learning materials for virtual geologic field survey of the Songaksan and Jisagae area, Jeju island. The developed web contents were placed into three parts; main manu, sub manu and contents to help the learners flow-chart of the program easily. To overcome the weakness of existing textual web materials, some movable images and worksheets were provided for the learners, and the web contents were designed for the learners to experience as similar as the geologic field survey may let them do.

  • The concentration of the tritium in precipitation from 2007 to 2009 has been analyzed for using tracer of groundwater study. The samples were collected monthly at Daejeon. The tritium concentrations in precipitation were ranged from 4.2 TU to 18.6 TU. The contents were higher at spring and fall season and lower at summer and winter season. The weighted average tritium content in precipitation was $7.85{\pm}0.46\;TU$.

  • This study was conducted to characterize on the relationships of rainfall intensity and infiltration rate of rainfall dependent on unit weight change in the gneissic weathered soil by a column test equipment. In this study, volumetric water content and pore water pressure were measured using TDR sensors and tensiometers at regular time intervals. Rainfall conditions including continuous rainfall and repeated rainfall were selected in order to know the effect of antecedent rainfall. In the condition of rainfall intensity 20mm/h and the unit weights of soil as $1.35g/cm^3$, $1.55g/cm^3$ and $1.61g/cm^3$, average rainfall infiltration rate was $2.814{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$, $1.969{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ and $1.252{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ respectively. The higher rainfall intensity and lower unit weight of soil, the faster average infiltration rate. Overflow in the column was happened except rainfall condition of rainfall intensity 20mm and soil unit weight $1.35g/cm^3$. Increasing the soil unit weight, overflowed water was increased and occurrence time was faster.

  • One of the most critical and essential procedures in the interpretation of gravity and magnetic data is to separate the anomaly due to the specific geologic structure from the summation of effects from a broad variety of geologic sources, especially those of different depths. Separation of the residual anomaly from the regional field is the most simple case of the vertical separation. If the anomaly due to a layer of specific depth can be separated or the depth of the separated layer can be quantitatively determined, it may deserve the separation-sounding. We suggest a wavelength filter whose cutoff frequency is determined by log-power spectrum analysis, as a separation-sounding filter. We applied this filter both to synthetic and real gravity data acquired at Heunghae area, and compared the results with those of Jacobsen's upward continuation filter. These showed that the proposed separation-sounding filter could be a useful tool for interpretation of the vertical geologic structure by stripping the gravity effects of geologic sources down to the desired depth.

  • GIS was appl ied for analysis of the potfnt ial degree of regional geologic hazard, expecially landslide, in the suburb of Seoul city. Potential elements causing a landslide are geology, slope geometry, groundwater, soil property, rainfall and vegetation etc. These factors were incorporated through GIS in order to predict the potential hazards, and to produce a regional geologic hazard map in the study area, For this study, ARC/INFO and ERDAS systems were used in SUN4-390 workstation.

  • Though geologic storage of $CO_2$ (GS) is considered as an attractive technological option to enormously reduce greenhouse gases emission into the atmosphere, many concerns on potential environmental and health risks associated with $CO_2$ leakage have been raised. In particular, groundwater contamination due to the brine displacement by a pressure build-up and the acidification by leaked $CO_2$ is paid a special attention. Therefore, integrated regulatory frameworks have been established by law in many countries to secure the permanent containment of injected $CO_2$. Regulatory frameworks deal with entire processes of GS, including site selection, monitoring and post-closure environmental management. This review paper provides a summary of regulatory frameworks in USA (U.S. EPA Geologic Sequestration Rule) and EU (Geologic $CO_2$ Sequestration Directive). The regulatory framework to properly address environmental issues should be established for the deployment of CCS projects in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions and practices of secondary science teachers who participated in an Earth science teachers' research roup about teaching geologic field trips. Four Earth science teachers participated in this study. Data included field trip observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, and analysis of instructional materials and students' reports from the field trip. Field trip observations and interviews were video- and audio-taped and transcribed. Results indicated that teacher participants focused more on aesthetic objectives for geologic field trip. The participants' instruction tended to show rather teacher-centered explanation due to limited time at each field site though various teaching strategies were used at times to engage students in a scientific inquiry. This group of teachers strived to develop their professional ability to guide geologic field trip by working with a small study group with colleagues, participating geologic field trips, and enrolling graduate programs.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop a educational data in order for students to perform geologic field survey effectively by themselves. A area around the Duta Mountain is selected. which is located at the southeastern part of Eumsung sedimentary basin because various rock types and geologic structures are well shown in this area and also it is convenient to reach there. Thirteen stops for observation are chosen m a route f3r exercising field geologic investigation. Data for field research are given and described in detail from each stop for observation. To do this, students make their own route map using general or digital geographic map and aerial photo is added to know relationship between large-scale structure and different rock types regionally. Moreover, it is designed to minimize conflict factors that may be experienced from the real field survey by showing outcrop photographs and polarizing photomicrographs of rut samples related to each stop and geologic structures. The attitude of students is investigated with the data of field geologic survey for students of an Earth Science class in the College of Education in Chungbuk National University. The results indicate that the educational data for geologic field survey brought positive changes that greatly help students perform field survey in definitive side, especially formation of absolute concepts on earth science.

  • Trace levels of uranium and thorium in geologic samples are determined rapidly by a direct wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence method. Relative intensity of scattered tube radiation was used as an internal standard to compensate for variations in instrumental operating characteristics. U and Th can be determined within a precision of ${\pm}10%$ and accuracy of ${\pm}15%$ or less with measuring times of 50 seconds for Th and 400 seconds for U, respectively. The results of XRF analysis were in good agreement with those of other methods such as nutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.
