The vibration problems associated with gear coupled rotors have been the focus of much engineering work. These systems are complex and difficult to analyze in that they have the problems associated with conventional rotors plus those additional problems associated with the gear couplings. This paper examines the problems peculiar to the gear mesh. Because of the meshing action of gears, the elasticity of the gear teeth introduces time-varying stiffness coefficients into the governing equations of motion. This means that system response must be thought of in terms of Mathieu-type equations, where multiple-frequency response occur due to the periodic coefficients. The meshing action of the gears also couples the lateral and torsional gear motions. Gear errors, such as tooth profile and spacing errors, produce forces and torque that excite the system at multiple frequencies, some of which are much higher than shaft rotational speed. To investigate how to the time-varying stiffness in the gear teeth and the gear errors act one the dynamic response of the gear coupled rotors, a three-dimensional dynamic model with lateral-tortional oscillation is developed. The harmonic balance technique is employed to solve this mathieu-type problem.

Recently, the need for designing multi-stage gear drive has been increased as the hear drives are used more in the applications with high-speed and small volume. The design of multi-stage gear drives includes not only dimensional design but also configuration design of various machine elements. Until now, however, the researches on the design of gear drives are mainly focused on the single-stage gear drives and the design practices for multi-stage gear drives, especially in configuration design activity, mainly depend on the experiences and 'sense' of the designer by trial and error. We propose a design algorithm to automate the dimension design and the configuration design of multi-stage gear drives. The design process consists of four steps. The number of stage should be determined in the first step. In second step, the gear ratios of each reduction stage are determined using random search, and the ratios are basic input for the dimension design of gears, which is performed by the exhaustive search in third step. The designs of gears are guaranteed by the pitting resistance and bending strength rating practices by AGMA rating formulas. In configuration design, the positions of gears are determined to minimize the volume of gearbox using simulated annealing algorithm. The effectiveness of the algorithm is assured by the design example of a 4-stage gear drive.

A composite gear with involute-circular are tooth profile and a tooth profile of the rack to cut this gear are theoretictically obtained. The composite gear has involute tooth profile in the vicinity of pitch point and has circular arc tooth profiles at addendum adn dedendum. The contact ratio(M$_{c}$), chordal tooth thickness (chordal tip tooth thickness S$_{t}$, chordal root tooth thickness S$_{t}$) of the composite gear are compared with those of involute gear. When module, number of teeth and pressure angle eqaul, S$_{t}$ of composite gear is much larger than that of involute gear. Under the same conditions, S/sib t/ and M$_{c}$ of composite gear become smaller than those of involute gear.lute gear.

Gear tooth micro-geometry modifications include the intentional removal of material from the gear teeth flanks, so that the shape is no longer a perfect involute. If the gear shapes are perfect, then the gear tooth meshing is better, therefore the gears will transmit input torque in a more efficient manner without the generation of high frequency engine fluctuation noise. In this paper, we study tooth micro-geometry optimization of rear gear set in 2 speed planetary gear reducers. Analysis revealed problems which are need of modification. Based on the results, tooth micro-geometry was used to deal with load distributions on the rear gear set.

In recent years, the need for multi-stage gear drives which highly reduce output speed has been increased. However, the design of multi-stage gear drives has been carried out by a limited number of experts. The consideration for the direction of input and output axes also makes their design very difficult. The purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm for automatically generating complex multi-stage gear drives and to implement a design supporting system for multi-stage gear drives. There are 4 stages in the proposed algorithm, and major design parameters, such as the direction of input and output axes, reduction ratio, etc. are set up in the first stage. In the second stage, all mechanisms are generated, and various rules are applied to select feasible mechanisms. In the third stage, the gear ratio of each stage is divided from total gear ratio. Next, the specifications of gears for feasible mechanisms are calculated and their bending strength and surface durability are estimated. In the forth stage, appraised indexes are calculated and provided to support the estimation of the generated gear drives.

Conventional automatic transmission system includes a hydrodynamic torque converter to transfer engine torque from an engine crank shaft to a rotatable input members, which are of complex design permitting them to serve several functions. These are clutches or brakes which couple the rotatable input member to member of a planetary gear set. The annulus gear for an automatic transmission is a monolithic gear having a set of gear teeth formed on an inner surface which is coupling with a set of planetary gear. In this study, the flow forming method is applied to the manufacturing of the annulus gear. This cold forming is proper method in order to manufacture dimensionally precise and round hollow components such as annulus gear. By pre-calculated amount of wall thickness reduction, the seamless tube of SAE1026 is compressed above its yield strength, plastically deformed and made to flow in several roll passes. According to this study, the desired geometry of the annulus gear can be achieved when the outer diameter and the thickness of the tube are properly decreased by compressed roll passes and the available material volume is easily forced to flow longitudinally over the shape of mandrel.

This paper presents a study on the helical gear inspection system for application to vehicle transmission gear manufacturing lines. The special gear profile inspection system is not suitable for manufacturing lines due to the measuring time. The master gear method, which was used in this study and compared with the machined gear in the line, is more efficient and economical. In this paper, three helical gear inspection parameters were of concern: nick, run-out, and PCD (pitch circle diameter) error. To evaluate its influence on the accuracy, the gear measuring system was also studied. This system can be useful in practical vehicle transmission gear manufacturing lines, where imported equipment is currently being used.
Agricultural gear reducers are used in a variety of agricultural machinery designs such as in agricultural tractors and transport cars, and even greenhouses. For greenhouses, a gear reducer is used to control windows on the side and the roof. Gear reducers for agricultural applications are designed using the empirical method because of the lack of a standard for experimentation. Simulation is necessary for the optimal design of an agricultural gear reducer. There are many advantages to this optimization such as low-cost maintenance, reduced size, and weight. In this study, bending and contact safety factor simulation for the gear reducer of a greenhouse was conducted by decreasing the face widths of helical gear shaft 2 and shaft 3 from 30.8 and 30 mm, respectively, at an interval of 4 mm. The bending and contact safety factors were calculated using AGMA standard. Simulation results showed that bending and contact safety factors decreased rapidly when the face width of the helical gear on shaft 2 was 30 mm and the face width of helical gear on shaft 3 decreased from 30.8 mm to 26.8 mm, suggesting that it would be safe to reduce the face width of the helical gear on shaft 3 to 26.8 mm. The reduction of the face width also reduced the weight of the agricultural gear. This study suggests that the agricultural gear reducer safety factor decreases as the face width decreases.
Agricultural tractors are designed using the empirical method due to the difficulty of measuring precise load cycles under various working conditions and soil types. Especially, directly drives various tractor implements, the power take off (PTO) gear. Therefore, alternative design methods using gear design software are needed for the optimal design of tractors. The objective of this study is to simulate fatigue life of the PTO gear according to the operating point of the tractor engine. The PTO gear was made with SCr415 alloy steel with carburizing and quenching treatments. The fatigue life of the PTO gear was simulated by using bending and contact stress according to the torque of the load levels. The PTO gear simulation was conducted by the KISSsoft commercial software for gear analysis. Bending and contact stress were calculated by the ISO 6336:2006 Method A and B. The simulation of fatigue life was calculated by the Miner's cumulative damage law. The total fatigue life of tractors can be estimated to 3,420 hours; thus, 3,420 hours of fatigue life were used in the simulation of the PTO gear of tractors. The main simulation results showed that the maximum fatigue life of the PTO gear was infinite fatigue life at maximum engine power. Minimum fatigue life of the PTO gear was 19.61 hours at 70% of the maximum engine power. Fatigue life of the PTO gear changed according to load of tractor. Therefore, tractor work data is needed for optimal design of the PTO gear.

As discarded fishing gear settles or floats on the seabed, it destroys the spawning and habitat of fisheries resources that causes various safety accidents and adverse effects on the environment, such as generating microplastics and causing ship accidents. In order to solve this problem, this study is intended to present an implementation plan for establishing a fishing gear deposit system in order to use it as basic data for establishing policies for fishing gear management in Korea. In order to successfully implement the fishing gear deposit system, the deposit system must be established in the form of fishing gear completed at the production stage. It was found that the marking of the object should be easy, and that determining an appropriate deposit amount to motivate the return of waste fishing gear and establishing a convenient return procedure for returned waste fishing gear were important factors. In addition, transparent management of unreturned deposits and mandatory use of fishing gear subject to the deposit system for fishermen will be necessary. The role of a specialized organization to manage and operate all of these procedures is also very important. It is necessary to establish a new mandatory provision in the Fisheries Act to require fishermen who directly use fishing gear to use fishing gear with a deposit refund mark, and to ensure the implementation of the deposit system by linking it with the evaluation items of government policy projects. Since the main purpose of the deposit system is to collect discarded fishing gear, a support plan will be necessary in accordance with the purchase project for fishing waste salvaged by local governments in 2020.
