Community Composition on Stream Benthic Macroinvertebrate in Daegu (대구 일대 하천 저서성 대형무척추동물의 수계별 군집구성)

  • The benthic macroinvertebrates of stream around Mt. Innae, Mt. Gumi and Mt. Dodung in Daegu were studied between April and September in 2005. Physico-chemical factors such as depth, velocity, pH, conductivity and DO were measured in each study site. The depth distributed from 3.3 cm to 18.6 cm, conductivity from 35.5 to 223.1${\mu}s$, and DO between 5.66 and 10.73$mgL^{-1}$. Total observed species of benthic macroinvertebrates were 78 in study streams. The first dominant family was Chironomidae, occupying from 59 to 65%. The other dominant families were Ephemeroptera (12$\sim$19%) and Gastropoda (5$\sim$14%). Mt. Innae was observed as having the most abundance species. EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) richness were from 4 to 14.

  • The present study was conducted to find out effect of PFOS on survival, activity, growth and organ structure of the melania snail, Semisulcospira gottschei. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and four PFOS exposure condition (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L). After 16 week exposure, survival rate and activity were not significantly influenced at the two lower exposure groups, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L, but they were significantly reduced in 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L groups. Total weight and meat weight rate (MWR) were reduced in PFOS exposure group in comparison to control group. Also, histological degenerations such as acidification of mucous, necrosis and split of muscular fiber bundle, atrophy of anterior pedal gland were recognized in the foot. Hepatopancreas showed the atrophy and degeneration of the digestive cell, vacuolation of digestive gland and closure of lumen in digestive gland.

Species Composition and Monthly Variation of the Organisms attached to Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay, Korea (가막만 모자반군락지내 부착생물의 종조성 및 월별변동)

  • We studied the organisms attached to Sargassum beds in Gamak Bay from November 2007 to June 2008. The water temperature ranged from 3.3 to $28.7^{\circ}C$ and salinity from 30.6 to 33.8 psu. Eighteen species $143,432\;ind./m^2$ were sampled during study periods. The biomass of the Sargassum beds ranged from a highest of $196.08\;g\;dw/m^2$ in March to a lowest of $0\;g\;dw/m^2$ in July. The major dominant species were Barleeia angustata ($134,430\;ind./m^2$), Caprellidae sp.($2,443\;ind./m^2$) and Gammaridae sp.($4,201\;ind./m^2$). The ecological indices of diversity, evenness, and richness were 0.11-0.86, 0.04-0.39, and 0.74-1.06, respectively.

Comparison of Species Composition and Seasonal Variation of Demersal Organisms Caught by Otter Trawl in the Coastal Waters off the Taean Peninsula, in the West Sea of Korea (서해 태안반도 연안에서 오터트롤에 채집된 저서생물의 종조성 및 계절변동)

  • To investigate species composition and seasonal variation of demersal organisms in the coastal waters off the Taean peninsula, otter trawl surveys were conducted from April 2010 to January 2011. A total of 75 species were collected, including 44 species of Pisces, 19 species of Crustacea, 6 species of Cephalopoda, 4 species of Gastropoda, and 1 species each of Bivalvia and Echinoidea. The dominant species in each season were Palaemon gravieri in spring, Charybdis bimaculata in summer, Loligo japonica in autumn, and Crangon hakodatei in winter. The number of species, individuals and biomass were highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The diversity index was highest in summer and lowest in winter. The dominance index was highest in winter and lowest in summer. The richness index was highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The evenness index was highest in summer and lowest in autumn. A cluster analysis showed that demersal organisms were divided into two groups; spring and winter organisms (Group 1) and summer and autumn organisms (Group 2). We detected a significant difference (P<0.05) between these groups, mainly owing to Platycephalus indicus, Repomucenus koreanus, and Paralichthys olivaceus within Pisces: Trachysalambria curvirostris, Metapenaeopsis dalei, P. gravieri, and C. hakodatei within Crustacea: and L. japonica within Cephalopoda.

Observations of Boring Behaviour and the Drilling Mechanism of Lunatia fortunei (Gastropoda: Naticidae) in Western Korea

  • Boring behaviour and drilling mechanism were investigated by visual observations. In this study, of two kinds of holes (the outer and inner holes) which are formed by drilling of boring gastropod Lunatia fortunei (Naticidae), the diameters of the outer holes are broader and larger than those of the inner holes, and their holes look like the crater in shape, as seen in all valves of bivalves bored by Naticidae species. Two kinds of glands (the accessory boring gland and accessory salivary gland) on the foots of boring gastropods have been investigated. Of them, it has been confirmed that only the accessory salivary glands on the foots secreted sulphuric (acidic) components in the mucus (secretion), while the accessory boring glands on the foots did not secrete their components. In this study, we confirmed that L. fortunei possess the accessory boring gland on the foot, as seen in most species in Naticidae. Accoeding to the results of the experiment of the blue litmus paper tests of the mucus (secretions) secreted from the accessory boring gland the color of the blue litmus paper did not turn red in color because chemical components of mucus (secretion) secreted from the accessory boring gland on the foot of L. fortunei (boring gastropod) were not acidic components. It is supposed that the mucus, which is secreted from the accessory boring gland, contained gelatin-like substances or enzymes without acidic components, as already reported in Naticidae species. Therefore, these substances may be involved in softening the surface of the valves of M. veneriformis. Consequently, it is assumed thar L. fortunei bores holes through the shells of molluscs by means of following 3 methods: (1) a softening of the calcareous shells of M. veneriformis with chemical secretions (including gellatin-like substances or enzyme except for acidic components) from the accessory boring glands, (2) mechanical rasping with the radula, (3) a combination of both. In this study, particularly, acidic components, which are involved in softening the surface of the shells, are not associated with the boring mechanism of L. fortunei because chemical acidic components were not detected in the mucus (secretion), as found in Naticidae species.

  • Morphology and histochemistry of gill of the abalone, Haliotis discus hannai were described using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The abalone has bipectinate gill of protobranch. The cilia and microvilli were well-developed on the free surface of the gill filaments. The epithelial layer of gill filament was simple and composed columnar epithelia and mucous cells. Result of AB-PAS (pH 2.5 and 1.0) and AF-AB (pH 2.5) reaction showed that mucous cells contained mainly acidic carboxylated mucosubstances.

Histopathological Changes in Tissues of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos Incubated in Crude Extracts of Camellia Seed and Mangosteen Pericarp

  • The present study was performed to observe histopathological changes in tissues of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos (Gastropoda, Bithyniidae) incubated in crude extract solutions of camellia (Camellia oleifera) seed and mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) pericarp, and furthermore to estimate the molluscicidal effects of 2 plant substances. Substantial numbers of bithyniid snails were incubated in various concentrations of 2 plant solution for 24 hr. As the positive control, snails incubated in various concentrations of niclosamide, a chemical molluscicide, were used. The histopathological findings were observed in sectioned snail specimens of each experimental and control groups. The results showed that both camellia and mangosteen extracts had molluscicidal effects at 24 hr with 50% lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) at concentrations of 0.003 and 0.002 g/ml, respectively, while niclosamide had $LC_{50}$ at concentrations 0.599 ppm. B. siamensis goniomphalos snail tissues (foot, gill, and digestive system) showed disruption of columnar muscle fibers of the foot, reduction of the length and number of gill cilia, numerous mucous vacuoles, and irregularly shaped of epithelial cells. Irregular apical and calciferous cells, dilatation of the digestive gland tubule, and large hemolymphatic spaces, and irregular apical surfaces, detachment of cilia, and enlargement of lysosomal vacuoles of epidermis were also shown in all groups. By the present study, it is confirmed that 2 plants, camellia and mangosteen, are keeping some substance having molluscicidal effects, and histopathological findings obtained in this study will provide some clues in further studies on their action mechanisms to use them as natural molluscicides.

Morphological Study on the Osphradium of Rapana venosa (Gastropoda : Muricidae) (피뿔고동 ( Rapana venosa Valenciennes )의 Osphardium 에 관한 형태학적 연구)

  • The authors observed histochemical and ultrastructural characters on the osphradium of Rapana venosa Valenciennes using light microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscpes. The results were as follows:1)The basic structure of osphradium was bipectinated shape, which consisted of a septum situating in the center of osphradium and numerous osphradial leaflets. On the other hand, Epidermis of ospradial leaflets formed the structure of pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium which was composed of an epithelial cell layer, a basal cel layer and a neuropile. 2) Ciliated dpithelial cells:A large number of these cells were observed on the lateral and ventral regions but a small number of them were observed on the dorsal region. These cells had cylindrical microvilli, slender mitochondria and serve fibers.3) Supporting cells: These cells had cylindrical microvilli, spongy layer, electron dense granules, mitochondria and nerve fibers4) Four types secretory epothelial cells: Four distinct types of secretory epithelial cells were recognized and were arbitrily designated as Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV.cell type I: These cells contained electron denwe granules(diameter, 0.94-1.56${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), well developed Golgi apparatus and rough endoplasmic reticula, cell type II: These cills contained two types of granules of the different electron density. One was high electron density granules which were 0.4-1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter, The other was low electron density granules which were 0.75-1.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter.cell type III:These cells had fibrous secretory materials and exhibited strongly positive reaction with Toluidine blue.cell type IV:A large number of this type of cells were observed on the ventral region of ospgradial leaflets and positively reacted with periodic acid Schiff reagent. 5)Dark cells contained several electron dense cillaty rootlets and unmerous granules but cellular organelles were not observed.6) Four types basal cells: Four distinci types of basal cells were recognized and arbitrarily designated as Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV.Cell type I(light cell): These cells exhibited low electuon density and contained short smooth endoplasmic reticula, several vacuoles and granules.

Feeding Habits of Chaenogobius gulosus in the Coastal Waters of Tongyeong, Korea (통영 주변해역에서 출현하는 별망둑(Chaenogobius gulosus)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of Chaenogobius gulosus were studied based on an examination of the stomach contents of 333 specimens collected between October 2008 and September 2009 in the coastal waters of Tongyeong, Korea. The specimens ranged in standard length (SL) from 2.0 to 12.6 cm. C. gulosus is an omnivore and consumes mainly seaweeds (such as Ulva pertusas), crabs and gastropods. Its diet also included small quantities of bivalves, polychaetes, insects, shrimps, mysids and amphipods. Smaller individuals (<6 cm SL) consumed mainly gastropods. The proportion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleled the increased consumption of seaweeds. Seasonal changes in the diet of C. gulosus were significant. Seaweeds were consumed more during spring and summer compare with other seasons.

Mitochondrial DNA Sequence Variations and Genetic Relationships among Korean Thais Species (Muricidae: Gastropoda)

  • Thais Roding, 1798, commonly known as rock-shell, is among the most frequently found gastropod genera worldwide on intertidal rocky shores including those of Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea. This group contains important species in many marine environmental studies but species-level taxonomy of the group is quite complicated due to the morphological variations in shell characters. This study examined the genetic variations and relationships among three Korean Thais species based on the partial nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial cox1 gene fragments. Phylogenetic trees from different analytic methods (maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining, and maximum likelihood) showed that T. bronni and T. luteostoma are closely related, indicating the most recent common ancestry. The low sequence divergence found between T. luteostoma and T. bronni, ranging from 1.53% to 3.19%, also corroborates this idea. Further molecular survey using different molecular marker is required to fully understand a detailed picture of the origin for their low level of interspecific sequence divergence. Sequence comparisons among conspecific individuals revealed extensive sequence variations within the three species with maximum values of 2.43% in T. clavigera and 1.37% in both T. bronni and T. luteostoma. In addition, there is an unexpectedly high level of mitochondrial genotypic diversity within each of the three Korean Thais species. The high genetic diversity revealed in Korean Thais species is likely to reflect genetic diversity introduced from potential source populations with diverse geographic origins, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, and a variety of different coastal regions in South China and Japan. Additional sequence analysis with comprehensive taxon sampling from unstudied potential source populations will be also needed to address the origin and key factors for the high level of genetic diversity discovered within the three Korean Thais species studied.
