The synthesis of 1,1-difluoroethane from acetylene as a function of HF/acetylene ratio, contact time and reaction temperature was studied on a fluorinated ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The fluorination of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was treated with pure HF gas at high temperature. The crystallinity, the porosity, and the acid properties of the prepared samples were examined using XRD, the nitrogen adsorption, pyridine-IR and ammonia-TPD respectively. The activity was enhanced by further fluorination of alumina. The fraction of 1,1-difluoroethane was obtained above 90% at reaction temperature of about $200^{\circ}C$. The ratio of 1,1-difluoroethane to vinylfluoride over fluorinated ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst was increased with the mole ratio of HF/acetylene and contact time, and was found to be the highest ratio at reaction temperature of $200^{\circ}C$.
This study was conducted to verify the effect of chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) on odor reduction at a commercial swine facility consisting of a compost ficility. Compost facility in $NH_3$ concentration was around 550 ppm and less than 78 ppm before and after the $ClO_2$ spraying, respectively, which was over 86% reduction. There was no H2S detection. $NH_3$ concentration was around 420 ppm and less than 35 ppm before and after the $ClO_2$ spraying, respectively, which was over 83% reduction. $H_2S$ concentration was around 210 ppb and less than 32 ppb before and after the $ClO_2$ spraying, respectively, which was over 85% reduction. Hence, $ClO_2$ spraying at windowless barns was compost facility decreased malodor such as $NH_3$.

In order to compare greenhouse gases emission from different animal manures and to explore how different animal manures effect on soil mineralization, three kinds of materials, cattle, goat and chicken manure were amended to soil for 14 days incubation as CtS (cattle manure-amended soil), GS (goat manure-amended soil) and ChS (chicken manure-amended soil). Cumulative $NH_3$ emissions in all treatments were rapidly increased until day 7 and then it was slightly increased in three manure-amended soils but maintained in control until day 14. GS had the highest $NH_3$ emission at $0.14mg\;kg^{-1}$ during the entire experimental period. Emissions of $CO_2$ were highly increased by 7.8-, 9.0- and 12.4-fold in CtS, GS and ChS, respectively, compared to control at day 14. A significant increase of $N_2O$ emission in all treatments occurred within 5 days and then it was slightly increased until day 14. $N_2O$ emission was 2-fold higher in all manure-amended soils than that of control. Compared to day 1, inorganic N ($NH_4{^+}$ plus $NO_3{^-}-N$) content was highly increased in all four treatments at day 14. The increase rate was the highest in CtS treatment. Net N mineralization was increased by 4.0-, 2.4- and 2.9-fold in CtS, GS and ChS, respectively, compared to control. These results indicate that increase of $NH_3$, $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ gas emissions was positively related to high N mineralization.

In odor to select optimum extraction methods of volatile compounds in beef extract powder(BEP) as basic data for the development of a new detection method of irradiated BEP, four extraction methods, such as solid phase microextraction with polar fiber(S-PD) and non-polar fiber(S-CD), purge and trap(P&T) and liquid liquid continuous extraction(LLCE) methods, were tested with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method. A total of 106 volatile compounds including 22 hydrocarbons, 7 aldehydes, 6 ketones, 13 alcohols, 6 sulfur-containing compounds, 19 nitrogen-containing compounds, 6 aromatic compounds, 17 terpenes, 8 furans and 2 miscellaneous compounds were detected in BEP by four detection methods. The most compounds(62 compounds) were detected by S-PD method, followed by P&T(43), LLCE(38) and S-CD method(30). Among these methods, S-PD and P&T methods showed a complementary interrelationship to detect volatile compounds as S-PD method showed high detectabiltiy to all compound groups except hydrocarbons and ketones, which had high volatility and low molecular weight(less than RI 1200), but P&T method showed the contrary pattern to that of S-PD method. Moreover, the most of volatile compounds detected by S-CD and LLCE methods were also detectable by S-PD or/and P&T methods. Therefore, the simultaneous application of S-PD and P&T methods were selected as the optimum volatile extraction methods of BEP.
Effect of anti-microbial agents, such as alcohol, garlic, chitosan, K-sorbate, or mustard, or pasteurization on the quality of traditional kochujang was investigated during storage at $30^{\circ}C$ for 24 weeks. Water activities of kochujang decreased after 12 weeks of storage. Consistency increased during storage and highest consistency of kochujang was obtained by the addition of mustard or garlic. Hunter a- and b-values decreased linearly as storage time passed. The degree of increase in total color difference$({\Delta}E)$ of alcohol added group was the highest among the tested anti-microbial agents. Gas was rapidly produced in the control and chitosan added group of kochujang. Capsanthin content decreased more rapidly in the group of alcohol, garlic or mustard added kochujang than the other group. Viable cell counts of yeast and aerobic bacteria in kochujang increased up to 12 weeks of storage, and then decreased slowly. The number of yeast was low in K-sorbate or alcohol added group. Activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ decreased during storage, but that of ${\beta}-amylase$ increased in alcohol, garlic, K-sorbate added or pasteurized kochujang. Protease activities did not show any remarkable differences in the groups of tested during storage.

Purpose: Obesity is associated with metabolic dysregulation, but the underlying metabolic signatures involving clinical and inflammatory profiles of obese asthma are largely unexplored. We aimed at identifying the metabolic signatures of obese asthma. Methods: Eligible subjects with obese (n = 11) and lean (n = 22) asthma underwent body composition and clinical assessment, sputum induction, and blood sampling. Sputum supernatant was assessed for interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$, -4, -5, -6, -13, and tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha}$, and serum was detected for leptin, adiponectin and C-reactive protein. Untargeted gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS)-based metabolic profiles in sputum, serum and peripheral blood monocular cells (PBMCs) were analyzed by orthogonal projections to latent structures-discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) and pathway topology enrichment analysis. The differential metabolites were further validated by correlation analysis with body composition, and clinical and inflammatory profiles. Results: Body composition, asthma control, and the levels of $IL-1{\beta}$, -4, -13, leptin and adiponectin in obese asthmatics were significantly different from those in lean asthmatics. OPLS-DA analysis revealed 28 differential metabolites that distinguished obese from lean asthmatic subjects. The validation analysis identified 18 potential metabolic signatures (11 in sputum, 4 in serum and 2 in PBMCs) of obese asthmatics. Pathway topology enrichment analysis revealed that cyanoamino acid metabolism, caffeine metabolism, alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, pentose phosphate pathway in sputum, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, glycerolipid metabolism and pentose phosphate pathway in serum are suggested to be significant pathways related to obese asthma. Conclusions: GC-TOF-MS-based metabolomics indicates obese asthma is characterized by a metabolic profile different from lean asthma. The potential metabolic signatures indicated novel immune-metabolic mechanisms in obese asthma with providing more phenotypic and therapeutic implications, which needs further replication and validation.

Coals and coal ashes, raw materials and by-products, in coal-fired power plants contain naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). They may give rise to internal exposure to workers due to inhalation of airborne particulates containing radioactive materials. It is necessary to characterize radioactivity concentrations of the materials for assessment of radiation dose to the workers. The objective of the present study was to analyze radioactivity concentrations of coals and by-products at four coal-fired plants in Korea. High purity germanium detector was employed for analysis of uranium series, thorium series, and potassium 40 in the materials. Radioactivity concentrations of $^{226}Ra$, $^{228}Ra$, and $^{40}K$ were $2{\sim}53Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $3{\sim}64Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $14{\sim}431Bq\;kg^{-1}$ respectively in coal samples. For coal ashes, the radioactivity concentrations were $77{\sim}133Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $77{\sim}105Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $252{\sim}372Bq\;kg^{-1}$ in fly ash samples and $54{\sim}91Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $46{\sim}83Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $205{\sim}462Bq\;kg^{-1}$ in bottom ash samples. For flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum, the radioactivity concentrations were $3{\sim}5Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $2{\sim}3Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $22{\sim}47Bq\;kg^{-1}$. Radioactivity was enhanced in coal ash compared with coal due to combustion of organic matters in the coal. Radioactivity enhancement factors for $^{226}Ra$, $^{228}Ra$, and $^{40}K$ were 2.1~11.3, 2.0~13.1, and 1.4~7.4 for fly ash and 2.0~9.2, 2.0~10.0, 1.9~7.7 for bottom ash. The database established in this study can be used as basic data for internal dose assessment of workers at coal-fired power plants. In addition, the findings can be used as a basic data for development of safety standard and guide of Natural Radiation Safety Management Act.
As carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, is generally emitted by vehicles, the development and distribution of electric cars is important for the sustainability of environmentally-friendly tourism, especially in national parks. National parks in Korea, however, still see the use of traditional vehicles powered by internal combustion engines in the handling of visitors and the transportation of goods and staff. Such engines being the cause of environmental problems such as exhaust emission and noise pollution, the introduction of electric cars in national parks is needed. This study aims to analyze the economic value of electric cars in national parks as well as contribute to the development of the Green Transportation model in tourism destinations. The study used a logit model to estimate the willingness to pay for the introduction of electric cars in national parks. Adults over the age of twenty, with gender and age apportioned equally, were surveyed using questionnaires that included dichotomous as well as demographic questions. The findings show that the amount an individual is willing to pay for the purpose of environmental conservation is 3,948 won, while the value the national parks would derive from the use of electric cars is 56,138,130,000 won. The introduction of electric cars in national parks is expected to offer both direct and indirect benefits while helping to improving the environment of the national parks by eliminating exhaust emission and noise. This introduction would also be a response to climate change that can be taken by society as a whole.
