The quality characteristics of semi-dry red pepper (SDRP) (Capsicum annuum L.) were compared with raw and dry red pepper (DRP). Raw red pepper was divided into pieces and the semi-drying treatment involved air-drying at $65^{\circ}C$. The study focused on describing the characteristics of semi-dry red pepper in comparison with dry red pepper. Factors considered were reduced drying period, ASTA color, capsanthin, capsaicinoids, free sugars and vitamin C content. ASTA color, capsanthin, capsaicinoids, free sugars and vitamin C content of SDRP were higher in SDRP than in DRP for 15 g or less water per 100 g. Red pepper powders made using the semi-drying method showed the highest amount of glucose and vitamin C. Capsanthin content in SDRP (151.6155.9 mg/100 g) was significantly higher than for DRP (133.4 mg/100 g). The capsaicinoid content of SDRP was about 13-25% higher than in DRP. The ASTA values (148.7159.3) for SDRP were much higher than for DRP (139.5). The vitamin C and free sugar content of SDRP was 40-76% and 20-40% higher, respectively, than for DRP. and $20{\sim}40%$, respectively, by SDRP compared to DRP.
This study was conducted to understand the influence of soil compaction on root growth and nutrient uptake characteristics of the soybean roots grown in two soils with different texture. Tap root elongation was measured on young seedling grown in cores compacted to different bulk densities of 1.2, 1.4 and $1.6/cm^3$ with different soil water retention in laboratory. The soil used were Samgag sandy loam and Baegsan loam soils. The wet and dry weight, total length, average radius and total surface area of roots were measured on soybean plants grown in 1/5000 a Wagner pots compacted to different bulk density of 1.2 and $1.4g/cm^3$. The nutrient uptake of soybean shoot was measured and evaluated with the unit surface area of roots at the 7th, 17th and 27th days after germination. The results were as follows: 1. The tap root elongation rate was faster in the loam soil with low bulk density than in the sandy loam soil with high bulk density. The elongation rates were remarkedly decreased when soil water was lower than the retention of 4 bars in loam soil and that of 1 bars in sandy loam soil. 2. Tap root elongation rate sharply decreased as increased soil strength higher than $2kgf/cm^2$ measured by ELE penetrometer showing curvillinear regression. However, it was low regardless of soil strength when soil water retention was 10 bars in sandy loam soil. 3. From the pot experiment, the total length of roots were longer in loam soil than in sandy loam soil and was longer in the soils with lower bulk density. The average radius of fine roots grown in sandy loam soil was larger than that grown in loam soil. The total surface area of roots was greater in the loam soil with low bulk density than in the sandy loam soil with high bulk density as the total length of roots. 4. The amounts of nutrient uptake by soybean shoots were greater in loam soil primarily due to more production of dry matter than in sandy loam soil. The nitrogen influx rates through the unit surface area were 597 to $753nmoles/day-cm^2$ in loam soil and 222 to $365nmoles/day\;cm^2$ in sandy loam soilshowing higher value in higher bulk density. The potasium influx rates were 99 to $175nmoles/day-cm^2$, and those of phosphate were 26 to $46nmoles/day\;cm^2$. Those of Ca and Mg were 175 to 246 and 163 to $205nmoles/day\;cm^2$. The difference in nutrient influx rates between bulk densities of these elements were lower than that of nitrogen.

The effects of water temperature, salinity, water column nutrient contents, and phytoplankton primary productivity on pigment composition and concentration, as well as primary productivity of Pyropia yezoensis Ueda purple lavers were studied at the primary cultivation areas in the Manho (Jindo-Haenam) region on the southwestern coast of Korea in March 2014. The water temperature was $9.1{\sim}9.6^{\circ}C$, salinity was 32.5~33.1, and transparency was 0.7~1.5 m. The shallow euphotic depth resulted from the high turbidity. Water column dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and silicate concentrations were $3.59{\sim}5.73{\mu}M$, $0.16{\sim}0.41{\mu}M$, and $12.41{\sim}13.94{\mu}M$, respectively. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration was $0.51{\sim}1.25{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. Nanoplankton ($0.7{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 58% of the total Chl a concentration. Fucoxanthin was the dominant photosynthetic pigment at all sites. Microplankton ($20{\sim}200{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 64% of the total fucoxanthin concentration. The primary productivity of phytoplankton was $57.72{\pm}4.67(51.05{\sim}66.71)mg\;C\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$. The nanoplankton ($0.7{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 77% of the total phytoplankton primary productivity. The calculated phytoplankton primary productivity was $11,337kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The primary productivity of Pyropia blades was $1,926{\pm}192(1,102{\sim}2,597)mg\;C\:m^{-2}d^{-1}$, i.e., calculated as $39,295kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The total primary productivity of phytoplankton and Pyropia blades was $50,632kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The primary productivity of Pyropia blades was 3.5 times greater than that of phytoplankton in the Manho region on the southwestern coast of Korea.

This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of liquid calcium acetate (LCAs) and solid calcium acetate (SCAs), Br-LCA, Pe-LCA and Ap-LCA as liquid form, Br-SCA, Pe-SCA and Ap-SCA as solid form. Calcium acetate was prepared by reacting of vinegars [brown rice (Br), persimmons (Pe) and apple (Ap)] and ash of black snail in order to obtain natural water soluble calcium resources. The pHs of the vinegars for preparing calcium acetate (CA) were the range of 2.34 ∼ 3.06, and the contents of the ash of black snail which reacted to 100 mL of the vinegars were 20.43∼23.50 g. The yields of solid CAs from 100 mL of the vinegars were 11.02∼13.01 g. The colors of liquid and solid CAs were light yellow in Ap-LCA and Ap-SCA, brown in Br-LCA and Br-SCA, dark brown in Pe-LCA and Pe-SCA. Calcium contents of Br-LCA, Pe-LCA and Ap-LCA were 3.02, 2.06 and 2.30% (w/v), and those of Br-SCA, Pe-SCA and Ap-SCA were 27.15, 16.31 and 19.48% (w/w), respectively. The solubilities of the solid CAs were 36.82 ∼ 39.92% (w/v) in distilled water, 32.05 ∼ 39.04% (w/v) in Soju, 13.12 ∼ 18.65% (w/v) in thick soysauce, 38.35 ∼ 38.90% (w/v) in ionic beverage, 33.47 ∼ 35.58% (w/v) in yoghurt, while the solid CAs formed the curds in soymilk and milk. The sour and bitter taste of the CAs were lower, while the astringent taste, fishy flavor and savory taste were higher than those of standard CA.
This study investigated the properties and antioxidative activities of phenolic acid concentrates of rice bran. Rice bran contains bioactive substances such as phenolic compounds, which can provide health benefits as natural antioxidants. This study examined how levels of phenolic acids can be obtained efficiently through various extraction methods. The extractions of defatted rice bran were followed by using ethylacetate (RBE-I), ethylacetate after alkaline hydrolysis (RBE-II), and 80% methanol (RBE-III). For all extracts, yields (%), total polyphenol contents (TPC), various phenolic acids and antioxidative activities were estimated. RBE-II had the highest total polyphenol contents (526.72 mg/100 g rice bran) and showed high antioxidative activity (74.7%). To concentrate the phenolic acids, RBE-II was passed through Sep-pak $C_{18}$ Vac cartridge and F1-RBE-II was collected by the elution of 50% methanol. The total phenolic content of F1-RBE-II (736.8 mg/100 g rice bran) was higher than that of RBE-II (367.1 mg/100 g rice bran), and the ratios of ferulic acid (73%) and sinapic acid (14%) increased. As RBE-II was analysed by HPLC, 6 different phenolic acids were found via chromatography, whereas F1-RBE-II showed 5 different peaks and the major phenolic acid was identified as ferulic acid. The ABTS radical scavenging activity of F1-RBE-II was the highest among the rice bran extracts. In a ${\beta}$-carotene-linoleic acid model system, linoleic acid oxidation was reduced by F1-RBE-II (73%) and RBE-II (35%).
Due to climate change, coastal areas are being flooded with torrential rain, typhoons, and tsunamis. In addition, non-point source pollutants (NPSs) that accumulated on the ground, streets, and buildings during the dry season are washed off by rain and stormwater runoff, which adds to the damage associated with environmental pollution, e.g., pollution that makes its way into the ocean. Recently, low impact development (LID) has been considered as a means of controlling water circulation and NPSs. In the coastal area, permeable blocks have been constructed mainly to reduce the flood damage caused by waves. Some important design factors that must be considered to ensure long-term performance are the permeability coefficient, clogging, and the efficiency of the removal of total suspended solids (TSS), but currently there are no standardized design criteria or testing techniques that are used worldwide. Herein, we analyzed the permeability coefficient and the TSS removal efficiency tendency according to the permeability area ratio with an easily-detachable, permeable block filled with calcinated yellow soils as the filter media. Our lab-scale tests indicated that, when the permeability area ratio was 25%, the reduction of the permeability coefficient after clogged was 11%, which was a significant decrease compared to other cases. Permeability persistence increased when the permeability area ratio increased from 50% to 75%. The TSS removal efficiency decreased as the permeability area ratio increased. Our pilot-scale test indicated that the TSS removal efficiency was more than 80% higher in all cases. We also found that the permeability persistence was excellent as the permeability area ratio increased, and, in actual construction, it is effective to set 5.3% of the total area as permeable area in terms of permeability and economic feasibility.

Failure of a pipeline due to local wall thinning is getting more attention in the nuclear power plant industry. Although guidelines such as ANSI/ASME B31G and ASME Code Case N597 are still useful fer assessing the integrity of a wall thinned pipeline, there are some limitations in these guidelines. For instance, these guidelines consider only pressure loading and thus neglect bending loading. However, most Pipelines in nuclear power plants are subjected to internal pressure and bending moment due to dead-weight loads and seismic loads. Therefore, an assessment procedure for locally wall thinned pipeline subjected to combined loading is needed. In this paper, three-dimensional finite element(FE) analyses were performed to simulate full-scale pipe tests conducted for various shapes of wall thinned area under internal pressure and bending moment. Maximum moments based on true ultimate stress(${\alpha}$$\sub$u,t/) were obtained from FE results to predict the failure of the pipe. These results were compared with test results, which showed good agreement. Additional finite element analyses were performed to investigate the effect of key parameters, such as wall thinned depth, wall thinned angle and wall thinned length, on maximum moment. Also, the effect of internal pressure on maximum moment was investigated. Change of internal pressure did not show significant effect on the maximum moment.
The Rkp1/CPC2, a receptor for activated protein kinase C of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, contains seven WD motifs found in the G-protein $\beta$-subunit. A 110-kDa protein was identified to interact with Rkp1/CPC2 by immunoprecipitation and following in vitro binding assay. To examine its kinase activity and binding ability to Rkp1, the $pck1^+$, a PKC homolog of S. pombe, was cloned. Pckl phosphorylated myelin basic protein (MBP) and histone Hl in a phospholipid-dependent and $Ca^{2+}$-independent manner. It was demonstrated that the N-terminal region of Pck1 was responsible for the binding to Rkp1 , thus suggesting that Rkp1 interacted with Pckl to regulate Pckl-mediated signaling in S. pombe.
Purpose: To compare the profiles of the bronchodilator response (BDR) among children with asthma and/or allergic rhinitis (AR) and to determine whether BDR in these children is reduced by treatment with inhaled and/or nasal corticosteroid. Methods: Sixty-eight children with asthma (mean age, 10.9 years), 45 children with comorbid asthma and AR (mean age, 10.5 years), and 44 children with AR alone (mean age, 10.2 years) were investigated. After a 2-week baseline period, all children were treated with inhaled fluticasone propionate (either 100 or $250{\mu}g$ b.i.d., tailored to asthma severity) or nasal fluticasone propionate (one spray b.i.d. in each nostril) or both, according to the condition. Before and 2 weeks after starting treatment, all children were evaluated with spirometry and bronchodilator testing. BDR was calculated as a percent change from the forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$) at baseline. Results: The mean BDR was 10.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) 8.3-12.4%] in children with asthma, 9.0% (95% CI 7.3-10.9%) in subjects with asthma and AR, and 5.0% (95% CI 4.1-5.9%) in children with AR alone ($P$<0.001). After treatment, the mean BDR was reduced to 5.2% (95% CI 4.2-6.3%) ($P$<0.001) in children with asthma and to 4.5% (95% CI 3.5-5.5%) ($P$<0.001) in children with asthma and AR. However, children with rhinitis showed no significant change in BDR after treatment, with the mean value being 4.7% (95% CI 3.7-5.8%) ($P$=0.597). Conclusion: The findings of this study imply that an elevated BDR in children with AR cannot be attributed to nasal inflammation alone and highlights the close relationship between the upper and lower airways.

Maribacter dokdonensis DSW-8 was isolated from the seawater off Dokdo in Korea. To investigate the genomic features of this marine bacterium, we sequenced its genome and analyzed the genomic features. After de novo assembly and gene prediction, 16 contigs totaling 4,434,543 bp (35.95% G+C content) in size were generated and 3,835 protein-coding sequences, 36 transfer RNAs, and 6 ribosomal RNAs were detected. In the genome of DSW-8, genes encoding the proteins associated with gliding motility, molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis, and utilization of several kinds of carbohydrates were identified. To analyze the genomic relationships among Maribacter species, we compared publically available Maribacter genomes, including that of M. dokdonensis DSW-8. A phylogenomic tree based on 1,772 genes conserved among the eight Maribacter strains showed that Maribacter speices isolated from seawater are distinguishable from species originating from algal blooms. Comparison of the gene contents using COG and subsystem databases demonstrated that the relative abundance of genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism are higher in seawater-originating strains than those of algal blooms. These results indicate that the genomic information of Maribacter species reflects the characteristics of their habitats and provides useful information for carbon utilization of marine flavobacteria.
