  • In this paper I propose an algorithm of linear time complexity for NP-complete Maximum Independent Set (MIS) problem. Based on the basic property of the MIS, which forbids mutually adjoining vertices, the proposed algorithm derives the solution by repeatedly selecting vertices in the ascending order of their degree, given that the degree remains constant when vertices ${\nu}$ of the minimum degree ${\delta}(G)$ are selected and incidental edges deleted in a graph of n vertices. When applied to 22 graphs, the proposed algorithm could obtain the MIS visually yet effortlessly. The proposed linear MIS algorithm of time complexity O(n) always executes ${\alpha}(G)$ times, the cardinality of the MIS, and thus could be applied as a general algorithm to the MIS problem.

  • We investigated the mass occurrence of the salp Salpa fusiformis during spring in the southern waters of Korea and the northern East China Sea. Abundance of S. fusiformis and dominant taxonomic groups including copepods, ostracods, euphausiids, and appendicularian was examined along with environmental factors (e.g., temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration). The abundance of S. fusiformis at 27 stations ranged from 0 to $183\;inds\;m^{-3}$. Both aggregate and solitary forms of S. fusiformis occurred with a mean abundance of $62\;inds\;m^{-3}$ and $4\;inds\;m^{-3}$, and mean body length of 6.5 mm and 15.4 mm, respectively. Redundancy analysis showed that the abundance of S. fusiformis was negatively correlated with chlorophyll-a concentration, indicating the intensive grazing impact of S. fusiformis on phytoplankton. While the abundance of S. fusiformis increased, the species diversity of zooplankton community decreased. The abundances of total copepods and the dominant copepod species (e.g., adults and/or copepodites of Paracalansus parvus s.l., Calanus sinicus, Oithona similis, and Corycaeus affinis) also decreased with the increase of S. fusiformis abundance. However, the abundance of ostracods, euphausiids, and appendicularians was not affected by the mass occurrence of the salps. These results suggest that the mass occurrence of S. fusiformis in spring could negatively affect ecosystem conditions by changing trophodynamics in the zooplankton community.

  • The aqueous carbonation efficiencies of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and ladle slags at various pressures, temperatures, and liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratios were investigated to determine optimum conditions. The maximum CO2 carbonated concentrations in slag (0.584 mmol/g for BOF slag and 1.038 mmol/g for ladle slag) was obtained at 10 bars, 40℃, and L/S = 5 mL/g-dry. The L/S ratio was the most critical parameter for carbonation. The effect of carbonated slag amendment on the immobilization of heavy metals in two field-contaminated soils was also investigated. The immobilization efficiencies evaluated by using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme (SM&T) were above 90% for both raw and carbonated slags for all soils. The TCLP-extractable heavy metals concentrations were below the criteria (5.0, 1.0 and 5.0 g/L for Pb, Cd, and Cr, respectively) after immobilizations with both slags except for Pb in soil B. The SM&T analysis showed the decrease in the exchangeable phase but the increase in residual phase after immobilization with raw and carbonated slags. The results of this study imply the promising potential of the carbonated slags on the immobilization of heavy metals in the field-contaminated soils.

  • This research evaluated the long-term application effects of different soil amendments on yield, dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and soil organic carbon stock in rice paddy. The experiment consisted of four different fertilizations; Inorganic fertilization (NPK), NPK+Lime (NPKL), NPK+Silicate (NPKS), NPK+Compost (NPKC). There was no significant difference in rice yield between the treatment groups in 1995, but the rice yields in the NPKL and NPKC treatments in 2019 increased by 4.3% and 14.3% compared to NPK. In terms of soil properties, the pH of NPKS(6.7) and NPKL(6.4) in 2019 increased the most compared to the soil pH before experiment(5.2). The organic matter(OM) content from NPKC treatment increased upto 34 and 27 g kg-1 in year of 1995 and 2019, respectively, compared to before the test. In NPKS and NPKL treatment, labile carbon and nitrogen content, used as a soil quality indicator, increased by 1.1-1.9 times over the control. From these result, it is suggested that type and application rate of soil amendment should be determined based on the soil analysis before cultivation for sustainable agricultural environment and productivity.

  • Cotton fabrics were treated with gelatin to enhance dyeability and color strength when using Caesalpinia sappan dye. Gelatin was used as the protein and a pad-dry- cure method was used for the treatment process (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14g/l concentration). Pretreated fabrics were mordanted with 10% alum. Fabrics were then dyed with freeze-dried sappan wood water extract powder form. Dyed samples were assessed in regards to dyeing behavior and color fastness. Comparing untreated and gelatin treated samples from the SEM images indicated that the Gelatin treatment (10g/l) resulted in an enhanced surface roughness that was relative to that of untreated cotton. Padding cotton with gelatin at 6g/l concentration afforded dyed fabrics with a 2 times increase in the K/S value over that of untreated fabrics. All dyed samples were red color with a significant enhancement in the sample color strength (K/S) being observed for pretreated samples. pH values favor dye absorption with pH 7 yielding the highest color strength. Dyeing at an elevated temperature resulted in a lower color strength and reddish-dull color. Longer dyeing times created greater color strengths for untreated and gelatin treated cotton. Increased dye concentrations resulted in higher K/S values for both gelatin treated and untreated cotton. As for color fastness, gelatin treated and untreated cotton fabrics dyed with sappan wood extract showed a relatively low rating in washing fastness (color change 1 rating), light fastness (1 rating), and rubbing fastness (wet:1-2, dry:3-4 rating).

  • Elevated high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and metabolic syndrome are considered important predictors of cardiovascular mortality. This study examined the influence of the alcohol consumption level on the hs-CRP level and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in South Koreans. The study subjects were 3,884 participants (${\geq}19$ years) from the KNHANES in 2015. The subjects were divided into four groups according to their alcohol consumption; None (none-alcohol consumption), Low (less than 15 g/day), Medium (15~29.9 g/day), and High (over than 30 g/day). The odds ratio for high-risk hs-CRP of men was significantly lower in the Low or Medium groups compared to the None group. In women, the odds ratio for high-risk hs-CRP was not decreased in the Low or Medium groups but was significantly higher in the High group than in the None group. Compared to nondrinkers, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was lower in the Low group and Medium group in both men and women, whereas it was significantly higher in the High group in men only. In particular, the prevalence of low HDL-cholesterol was lower in all drinking groups. When the confounding factors were adjusted, the odds ratio for low HDL-cholesterol appeared to decline in the Low groups in both men and women. On the other hand, in the Medium group, women showed an elevated odds ratios of high blood pressure (HBP) and high fasting plasma glucose but men showed an elevated odds ratios of HBP and high triglyceride levels. The overall results suggest that low alcohol consumption is more appropriate than medium alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, more study will be needed to evaluate the appropriate alcohol consumption level.

  • Objectives : Amyloid ${\beta}(A{\beta})$ could induce cognitive deficits through oxidative stress, inflammation, and neuron death in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study was investigated the effect of Angelica keiskei KOIDZUMI (AK) on memory in $A{\beta}$-induced an AD model. Methods : AK was extracted uses 70% ethanol solvent. Total polyphenol and flavonoids content were obtained by the Folin-Ciocalteu and the Ethylene glycol colorimetric methods, respectively. The antioxidant activities were assessed through free radical scavenging assays using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) methods. Intracerebroventrical (i.c.v) injection of $A{\beta}$ 1-42 was used to induce AD in male ICR mice, followed by administrations of 5, 10 or 20 mg/kg AK on a daily. Animals were subjected to short and long term memory behavior in Y-maze and passive avoidance test. Results : The total polyphenol and flavonoids contents of the AK extract were $88.73{\pm}6.36mg$ gallic acid equivalent/g, $84.21{\pm}5.04mg$ rutin equivalent/g, respectively. The assays of DPPH and ABTS revealed that AK extract in treated concentrations (31.25, 62.5, 125, 250, 500, $1000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) increased antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. Oral administration of AK extract significantly reversed the $A{\beta}$ 1-42-induced decreasing of the spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze test and $A{\beta}$ 1-42-induced shorting of the step-through latency in the passive avoidance test. Conclusions : The findings suggest that AK indicated the antioxidant protective effects against $A{\beta}$-induced memory deficits, and therefore a potential lead natural therapeutic drug or agent for AD.

  • The purpose of our study was to evaluate anti-AD potential of Cirsium maackii flowers. MeOH extract, CH2Cl2, EtOAc, and n-BuOH fraction of this flower notably inhibited BACE1 (IC50 = 76.47 ± 1.66, 22.98 ± 1.45, 8.65 ± 0.63, and 72.47 ± 3.04 ㎍/mL, respectively). β-amyrenone (49.70 mg) (1), lupeol acetate (1.43 g) (2), lupeol (1.22 g) (3), lupenone (23.70 mg) (4), β-sitosterol (1.01 g) (6), and β-sitosterol glucoside (13.00 mg) (7) from CH2Cl2, apigenin (100.20 mg) (8), luteolin (19.00 mg) (9), apigenin 7-O-glucuronide methyl ester (21.30 mg) (14), and tracheloside (53.70 mg) (5) from EtOAc, apigenin 5-O-glucoside (11.00 mg) (10), luteolin 5-O-glucoside (11.00 mg) (11) and apigenin 7-O-glucuronide (91.00 mg) (12) from n-BuOH, and luteolin 7-O-glucuronide (22.00 mg) (13) from H2O fraction were isolated. HPLC showed high levels of 8, 9 and 12 in MeOH extract (33.07 ± 0.07, 31. 44 ± 0.17 and 16.89 ± 0.33 mg/g, respectively), EtOAc (161.01 ± 1.78, 96.93 ± 0.34 and 73.38 ± 0.06 mg/g, respectively), and n-BuOH fraction (32.18 ± 0.33, 44.31 ± 0.32 and 105.94 ± 0.36 mg/g, respectively). Since, 3 and 9 are well-known BACE1 inhibitors, the anti-AD activity of C. maackii flower might be attributable to their presence.

  • Spirulina was cultured in Selenium solution and the total concentration was determined with isotope dilution technique. Low-molecular-weight-Selenium species for the water extract of Spirulina were separated and quantified with HPLC ICP/MS. Water extraction was used first and then protein enzyme (protease XIV) was used to digest and extract for the Se species in both water extract and residue. The total Se was $414.9{\pm}4.0{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ and 77% existed in water extract while 22% remained in residue. Se species in supernatant was mostly inorganic selenate ($222.7{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$). After hydrolysis of protein, SeCys ($15.20{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$) and SeMet ($12.13{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$) were found. In residue, SeCys and SeMet were found with little inorganic Se. After protein hydrolysis of residue, more of Selenoamino acids SeCys ($9.35{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$) and SeMet ($18.23{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$) in addition to MeSeCys ($1.5{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$) were found. It is thought that inorganic selenium is mostly adsorbed on the surface of spirulina and can be easily removed by a simple distilled water extraction while most of organo-seleniums are remained in residue.

  • Salmonella spp. are frequently associated with food and are among the most important foodborne pathogens. The recent Salmonella out breaks in Korea was associated with chocolate mousse cakes served with school meals during September 2018. The objective of this research was to compare the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 - Salmonella and the Korean Standard Method of Salmonella in artificially inoculated mousse (chocolate and cheese) and tiramisu cakes. Mousse (chocolate and cheese) and tiramisu cakes were artificially inoculated with S. Typhimurium. Twenty five gram of sample was enriched with 225 mL buffered peptone water for incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. After enrichment, the cultures were analyzed by using the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 - Salmonella and the Korean Standard Method. Most of the inoculated samples showed similar results except the chocolate mousse cakes, in which real-time PCR was unable to detect S. Typhimurium even after $10^4CFU/25g$ of inoculation. However, S. Typhimurium inoculated at a concentration of $10^0CFU/25g$ was detected by using 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 - Salmonella. In chocolate mousse, detection of S. Typhimurium using real-time PCR was partially successful when dark chocolate was added at less than 15%. Negative results in real-time PCR and 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 - Salmonella were confirmed by gel electrophoresis. The data indicated that dark chocolate could inhibit amplification of the target gene in the PCR reactions. In conclusion, the 3M Molecular Detection Assay 2 - Salmonella was better than the Korean Standard Method (real-time PCR) for the detection of S. Typhimurium in chocolate mousse cakes and chocolate mousse.
