  • In this paper, we propose a scalable audio coder, which has a variable bandwidth from the narrowband speech bandwidth to the audio bandwidth and also has a bit-rate from 8 to 320 kbits/s, in order to cope with the quality of service(QoS) according to the network load. First of all, the proposed scalable coder splits bandwidth of the input audio into narrowband up to around 4 kHz and above. Next, the narrowband signals are compressed by a speech coding method compatible to an existing standard speech coder such as G.729, and the other signals whose bandwidth is above the narrowband are compressed on the basis of a psychoacoustic model. It is shown from the objective quality tests using the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and the perceptual evaluation of audio quality(PEAQ) that the proposed scalable audio coder provides a comparable quality to the MPEG-1 Layer III (MP3) audio coder.

  • Adopting an encryption function in voice over Wi-Fi service incurs problems such as additional power consumption and degradation of communication quality. To overcome these problems, a partial encryption (PE) algorithm for compressed speech was recently introduced. However, from the security point of view, the partial encryption sets (PESs) of the conventional PE algorithm still have much room for improvement. This paper proposes a new selection method for finding a smaller PES while maintaining the security level of encrypted speech. The proposed PES selection method employs the perceptual evaluation of the speech quality (PESQ) algorithm to objectively measure the distortion of speech. The proposed method is applied to the ITU-T G.729 speech codec, and content protection capability is verified by a range of tests and a reconstruction attack. The experimental results show that encrypting only 20% of the compressed bitstream is sufficient to effectively hide the entire content of speech.

  • The objective of this study was to optimize minimum-energy impulsive spacecraft intercept using genetic algorithms. A mathematical model was established on two-body system based on f and g solution and universal variable to address spacecraft intercept problem for non-coplanar elliptical orbits. This nonlinear problem includes many local optima due to discontinuity and strong nonlinearity. In addition, since it does not provide a closed-form solution, it must be solved using a numerical method. Therefore, the initial guess is that a very sensitive factor is needed to obtain globally optimal values. Genetic algorithms are effective for solving these kinds of optimization problems due to inherent properties of random search algorithms. The main goal of this paper was to find minimum energy solution for orbit transfer problem. The numerical solution using initial values evaluated by the genetic algorithm matched with results of Hohmann transfer. Such optimal solution for unrestricted arbitrary elliptic orbits using universal variables provides flexibility to solve orbit transfer problems.

  • In this paper, we studied several aspects that affect the quality of VoIP using WiFi network. It's clear that the background data traffic within an AP, the end-to-end delay and the traffic loss of TCP/IP network gives serious effects on the voice quality. A kind of access control for the VoIP connection within an AP should be done for the acceptable voice quality.

  • Speech recognition in digital communication systems has very low performance due to the spectral distortion caused by speech codecs. In this paper, the spectral distortion by speech codecs is analyzed and a pre-processing method which compensates for the spectral distortion is proposed for performance enhancement of speech recognition. Three standard speech codecs. IS-127 EVRC. ITU G.729 CS-ACELP and IS-96 QCELP. are considered for algorithm development and evaluation, and a single method which can be applied commonly to all codecs is developed. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated for three codecs, and by using the speech features extracted from the compensated spectrum. the recognition rate is improved by the maximum of $15.6\%$ compared with that using the degraded speech features.

  • This paper proposes a Voice Activity Detection (VAD) algorithm based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) network using dual threshold. The k-means clustering and Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm are used to upade the RBF network to the underlying speech condition. The inputs for RBF are the three parameters in a Code Exited Linear Prediction (CELP) coder, which works stably under various background noise levels. Dual hangover threshold applies in BRF-VAD for reducing error, because threshold value has trade off effect in VAD decision. The experimental result show that the proposed VAD algorithm achieves better performance than G.729 Annex B at any noise level.

  • Since a codebook-based CELP coder models its excitation signal according to one of several bit rates pre-assigned to codebooks and synthesizes speech signal using codebooks, it can not support encoding of speech signal at an arbitrary bit rate in one encoder. The proposed variable bit rate speech coder encodes the excitation signal based on the bit rate assigned to a present frame of speech using one-dimensional SPIHT and wavelet transform. Also it does't need to model excitation signal (or codebook) to some types as CELP coder, and can encode excitation signal at various bit rates without exact pitch information according to user requirement. As a result, since the coder doesn't have a codebook structure, it has relatively low coder complexity and provides equal or better speech quality compared to G.729 and G.723.1 coder.

  • A flocculating sugar tolerant yeast strain was isolated from fermenting Takju. This strain was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae CA-1 according to the Lodder's yeast taxonomic studies. The isolated yeast could grow in 50% glucose and in 7% ethanol in the YPD medium. It's optimal growth temperature, initial pH, shaking rate and initial glucose concentration for ethanol fermentation showed 35$\circ$C, 4.5, 150 rpm, 15%, respectively. Ethanol concentration was 63 g/l in 20% glucose after 24 hours, fermentation yield was 0.49 g-ethanol/g-glucose in 10% glucose after 24 hours and ethanol productivity was 3.09 g/l$\cdot $h in 10% glucose after 12 hours in batch fermentation. Repeated batch fermentation was possible for over 50 days and ethanol yield, ethanol productivity and substrate conversion rate were 0.39-0.50 g/g, 1.63-2.08 g/l$\cdot $h and more than 99%, respectively during these periods.
