  • The Hydrological Simulation Program - FORTRAN (HSPF) was modified to simulate nonpoint pollutant loadings from paddy fields using a field experimental data collected during 2001-2002. The concept of a 'dike height' was added in a modified HSPF code, named HSPF-Paddy, to consider the function of retaining water by a weir at the field outlet. The effect of fertilization on the variances of nutrients on the soil surface and shallow soil layer was described mathematically with a Dirac delta function (or first-order kinetics). As confirmed through model verification, the HSPF-Paddy modifications were shown to represent the function of retaining water, varied ponded water, and surface runoff by forced drain during both rainy and non-rainy seasons and reasonably predicted the water balance and nutrients behavior in paddy fields. It is a distributed watershed model which, with the paddy modifications, can now simulate nonpoint pollutant loadings where paddy fields are dominant, and it can be used to evaluate the effects of paddy fields on the water quality at a basin scale, and assess the impacts of proposed BMPs applied to paddy fields.

  • The design process of the motor driven tilt/telescopic steering column is established by axiomatic design approach in conceptual design stage. By selecting independent design variables for improvin g performance of the steering system, each detailed design can be carried out independently. In the detailed design, the safety in crash environment and vibration reduction are considered. An occupant analysis code SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Environment) is utilized to simulate the body block test. Segments, contact ellipsoids and spring-damper elements are used to model the steering column in SAFE. The model is verified by the result of the body block test. After the model is validated, the energy absorbing components are designed using an orthogonal array. Occupant analyses are performed for the cases of the orthogonal array. Final design is determined for the minimum occupant injury. For vibrational analysis, a finite element model of the steering column is defined for the modal analysis. The model is validated by the vibration experiment. Size and shape variables are selected for the optimization process. An optimization is conducted to minimize the weight subjected to various constraints.

  • This study was attempted to investigate the changes of specific fuel consumption, compression pressure and power output, consequently to obtain basic data on farm kerosene engine. The samples which are used in this study are a 4 cycle water cooled korosene engine for the use of K6-CT83 power tiller and a 4 cycle air-cooled kerosene engine for the use of G5L-3A water pump. The Korean Industrial Standards (K.S)KS-B 6002 "Test code of small internal combustion engine" was referred in carrying out this study, and its results are as follows. 1. According to load increasing, the speific fuel consumption of the engines generally decreases, however, in case of 10% over-loading it increases. 2. As a result of full load consecutive operation, according to passing of operating time, the amount of wear generally increases, consequently the speific fuel consumption also increases, and inversly the compression pressure decreases. 3. The changes of specific fuel consumption and compression pressure were closely related with time of piston ring exchange, and periodically about 100 hours the engines show the increase of specific fuel consumption and the decrease of compression pressure. 4. After about 300 hours, although the engine had new piston rings, the specific fuel consumption increase, consequently the engine needs boring. In actual use, it is impossible to operate consecutively on full load, therefore the boring time of engine is expected to come later.

  • This study was done to investigate status of polypharmacy and inappropriate medications use of the elderly of in nursing homes. The subjects of this study were 270 elderly people in the nursing homes of G city and K city, In this study, the medications were classified by Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) code, polypharmacy was defined as taking medications more than five, and inappropriate medications use were identified by Beers criteria. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test and one-way ANOVA. Total number of drug types in this study was the average $6.1{\pm}2.6$. The subjects with polypharmacy were 193(71.5%), and with inappropriate medications use were 138(51.1%). There was a significant difference in the polypharmacy according to the number of diseases(p<.001) and in the inappropriate medications use according to age(p=.018). Baesd on this study, polypharmacy and inappropriate medications use of elderly people were main problems that need to carefully assess for safe and correct medication usage in nursing home. Therefore, an ongoing medication monitoring system is necessary to minimize the adverse drug reactions of elderly.

  • Significant research efforts were undertaken to evaluate seismic performance of vertically irregular buildings on flat ground. However, there is scarcity of study on seismic performance of buildings on hill slopes. The present study attempts to investigate seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete irregular stepback building frames with different configurations on sloping ground. Based on extensive regression study of free vibration results of four hundred seventeen frames with varying ground slope, number of story and span number, a modification is proposed to the code based empirical fundamental time period estimation formula. The modification to the fundamental time period estimation formula is a simplified function of ground slope and a newly introduced equivalent height parameter to reflect the effect of stiffness and mass irregularity. The derived empirical formula is successfully validated with various combinations of slope and framing configurations of buildings. The correlation between the predicted and the actual time period obtained from the free vibration analysis results are in good agreement. The various statistical parameters e.g., the root mean square error, coefficient of determination, standard average error generally used for validation of such regression equations also ensure the prediction capability of the proposed empirical relation with reasonable accuracy.

  • This paper describes the buckling phenomenon of a tubular truss with unsupported length through a full-scale test and presents a practical computational method for the design of the trusses allowing for the contribution of torsional stiffness against buckling, of which the effect has never been considered previously by others. The current practice for the design of a planar truss has largely been based on the linear elastic approach which cannot allow for the contribution of torsional stiffness and tension members in a structural system against buckling. The over-simplified analytical technique is unable to provide a realistic and an economical design to a structure. In this paper the stability theory is applied to the second-order analysis and design of the structural form, with detailed allowance for the instability and second-order effects in compliance with design code requirements. Finally, the paper demonstrates the application of the proposed method to the stability design of a commonly adopted truss system used in support of glass panels in which lateral bracing members are highly undesirable for economical and aesthetic reasons.

  • Large eddy simulation(LES) methodology used to model the isothermal swirling flows in a dump combustor and the turbulent premixed flame in a model gas turbine combustor. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. In isothermal flow simulation, the results was compared with that of ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as experimental data, in order to verify the capability of LES code. To model the turbulent premixed flame in a gas turbine, the G-equation flamelet model was used. The results showd that LES and RANS well predicted the mean velocity field of a non-swirling flow. However, in swirling flow, LES showed a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, and the central recirculation zone than those of RANS. In a model gas turbine combustor, the operation condition of high pressure and temperature induced the different phenomena, such as flame length and flow-field information, comparing with the condition of ambient pressure and temperature. Finally, it was identified that the flame and heat release oscillations are related to the vortex shedding generated by swirl flow and pressure wave propagation.

  • Since Korean Seamen Act(herein after called "the Act") has been legislated in 1962, an amendment of the Act has duly performed several times in order to meet an essential guideline of appropriate international convention and practical requirement of domestic labour movement. As the Act in many area, is based on the application of international convention and regulations, it has been considered essential to call attention to such international rules, to emphasize their importance, and to indicate how and to what extent they may be incorporated in national law, in accordance with national constitutional rules and requirements. Of newly amended act in 1991, it could, however, not fully reflect an adequate and modern labour standard as a guideline of the convention. Therefore, a principal objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive reference work to assist amending up-to-data seamen act against the Act. The guidelines, however, do not attempt to suggest or formulate a legislative programme, but rather provide an ordered and specific content corresponding to international convention adopted by ILO. Consequentially, these guidelines aim to direct the reader and legislator toward the sources and contents of what has come to constitute an international code of maritime labour standards. The guidelines described herein may also serve as a specific arrangement to the various kinds of legal aspects to be regulated through reasonable future amendment under amicable agreement between interesting parties.g parties.
