  • This paper presents the user needs analysis and information visualization for the development of a semantic-based national R&D information navigation service in information service planning phase, which converges and fuses NDSL databases and NTIS databases. To investigate and analyze the user needs for improving usability, we make an improvement plan for R&D information services via a survey targeted at 30 persons, and on-site interviews targeted at 12 persons, almost of who are researchers in industries, universities and government-funded institutes. To design new information visualization service, we propose an interactive national R&D information visualization service, which is provided in navigation type, and prescribe persona and screen prototyping according to the user needs analysis. We design the national R&D information convergence/fusion architecture based on the NDSL databases, including 345,411 academic articles, 620,555 co-authors and 49,958 reports and NTIS databases including 187,466 national R&D projects. We expect that the national R&D information convergence/fusion architecture contributes to R&D information convergence/fusion as a leading model/standard and the interactive navigation-typed information visualization service strengthens usability continuously.

  • Background: Fatigue and sleepiness are inter-related and common among road transport drivers. In this study, sleep deprivation and fatigue among chemical transportation drivers were examined. Methods: A cross-sectional study surveying 107 drivers from three hazardous types of chemical production and transportation industries (nonflammable gases, flammable gases, and flammable liquids) was conducted. Data on sleep deprivation were collected using questionnaires of the Stanford Sleeping Scale and the Groningen Sleep Quality Scale. Fatigue was assessed using an interview questionnaire and a flicker fusion instrument. Results: Chemical drivers had a mean sleeping scale (Stanford Sleeping Scale) of 1.98 (standard deviation 1.00) and had a mean score of 1.89 (standard deviation 2.06) on the Groningen Sleep Quality Scale. High-risk drivers had higher scores in both the Stanford Sleeping Scale and the Groningen Sleep Quality Scale with a mean score of 2.59 and 4.62, respectively, and those differences reached statistical significance (p < 0.05). The prevalence of fatigue, as assessed through a critical flicker fusion analyzer, subjective fatigue question, and either of the instruments, was 32.32%, 16.16%, and 43.43%, respectively. Drivers who slept <7 hours and had poor sleep quality were found to have more fatigue than those who slept enough and well. Drivers who had a more sleepiness score resulted in significantly more objective fatigue than those who had a less sleepiness score. Conclusion: Sleep quality and sleeping hour can affect a driver's fatigue. Optimization of work-rest model should be considered to improve productivity, driver retention, and road safety.

  • Single crystal diamonds are in great demand in such fields as mechanical, electronic applications and optoelectronics. Large area single crystal diamonds are attracting attention in future industries for mass production and low cost. In this study, hot filament CVD (HFCVD) is used to grow large area single crystal diamond. However, the growth rate of large area single crystal diamond using HFCVD is known to be very low. The goal of this study is to use single crystal diamond substrates in HFCVD with methane-hydrogen gas mixtures to increase the growth rate of single crystal diamond and to optimize the conditions by analysing the effects of deposition conditions for high quality crystallinity. The deposition pressure, the ratio of CH4/H2 gas, the substrate temperature and the distance between the filament and the substrate were optimized. The sample used a 4×4 (mm2) size single crystal diamond substrate (100), the CH4/H2 gas ratio was fixed at 5%, the substrate temperature was synthesized to about 1000℃. At this time, the deposition pressure was changed to three types of 50, 75, 85 Torr and deposited. Finally, optimization was investigated under pressure conditions to analyse the growth rate and quality of single crystal diamond.

  • In this paper, a novel method is proposed using color and pattern information for recognizing some emotions included in a fertile. Here we use 10 Kobayashi emotion to represent emotions. - { romantic, clear, natural, casual, elegant chic, dynamic, classic, dandy, modem } The proposed system is composed of feature extraction and classification. To transform the subjective emotions as physical visual features, we extract representative colors and Patterns from textile. Here, the representative color prototypes are extracted by color quantization method, and patterns exacted by wavelet transform followed by statistical analysis. These exacted features are given as input to the neural network (NN)-based classifiers, which decides whether or not a textile had the corresponding emotion. When assessing the effectiveness of the proposed system with 389 textiles collected from various application domains such as interior, fashion, and artificial ones. The results showed that the proposed method has the precision of 100% and the recall of 99%, thereby it can be used in various textile industries.

  • Metal matrix composites (MMCs) were widely used in various industries, due to the excellent properties: high strength, stiffness, wear resistance, hardness, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, etc. With additive manufacturing (AM) technology rapidly developed, AM MMCs have been actively investigated thanks to the cost- and time-saving manufacturing. However, several issues still need to be addressed before fabricating AM MMCs. Here, several types of MMCs were introduced and MMCs' design methods to tackle the issues were suggested in a powder bed fusion (PBF) technique. The paper could come up with a guideline for the material and process design of MMCs in the PBF technique.

  • Recent keywords of the heavy industries are large-scale structure and productivity. Especially, the sizes of the commercial vessels and the offshore structures have been gradually increased to deliver goods and explore or produce oil and natural gas in the Arctic. High heat input welding processes such as electro gas welding (EGW) have been widely used for welding thick steel plates with flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), especially in the shipbuilding industries. Because high heat input welding may cause the detrimental effects on the fracture toughness of the welded joint and the heat affected zone, it is essential to obtain the sufficient toughness of welded joint. There are well known that the fracture toughness like CTOD, CVN, and KIC were very important factors in order to secure the safety of the structures. Furthermore, the welding residual stress should be considered to estimate the unstable fracture in both EGW and FCAW. However, there are no references on the welding residual stress distribution of EGW and FCAW with thick steel plates. Therefore the welding residual stresses were very important elements to evaluate the safety of the welded structure. Based on the measurement results, the characteristics of residual stress distribution through thickness were compared between one-pass electron gas welding and multi-pass flux-cored arc welding. The longitudinal residual stress in the multi-pass flux-cored arc welding is tensile through all thicknesses in the welding fusion zone. Meanwhile, longitudinal residual stress of EGW is tensile on both surfaces and compressive at the inside of the plate. The magnitude of residual stresses by electron gas welding is lower than that by flux-cored arc welding.
