  • The fusion between viral envelope and target cell membrane is a central step of viral infection, and the fusion proteins located at viral envelope mediate such process. Gp41 of HIV is one of the fusion proteins whose structure and mechanism of membrane fusion had been extensively studied. Functionally important motives of gp41 are the N-terminus fusion peptide, the coiled-coil and the membrane proximal C-peptide regions. The role of these regions during the fusion process had been thoroughly examined. Specially, insertion of the fusion peptide into membrane and conformational change of the coiled-coil and C-peptide regions are assumed to be critical for the fusion mechanism. In addition, the coiled-coil region has been shown to interact with membrane, and the C-peptide region regulates the interaction in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, fusion defective mutations of the coiled-coil region dramatically changed its binding affinity to membrane. These results suggested that the membrane binding property of the coiled-coil region is important for the fusion activity of gp41, and such property could be modulated by the interaction with the C-peptide region.

  • This study evaluated relative hot cracking susceptibility of commercial aluminum alloy welds, and then suggested possible mechanisms operated in the weld fusion zone and in the heat affected zone based on the observed cracking morphologies, fractography and microstructural features. The fusion zone solidification cracking was found to be mainly due to a microsegregation of Cu, Si, and Mg in grain boundaries, while liquation cracking in the HAZ was by the incipient melting of the segregated grain boundaries and the consitutional liquation of large aging precipitates and intermetallic compounds in the partially melted zone adjacent to the fusion line which experienced a rapid thermal excursion during welding.

  • This study aims to create a new urban space through mechanism structure and algorism analysis between IT and ET. The results are as follows. First, the development trends of ET IT are classified into 4 types, "Eco-Friendly Development", "Energy Production Technology Development", "Energy Saving Technology Development" and "Wide Area IT Network Development", which are found to be constantly evolving. Second, Sang-Am DMC developed through the environmentally protective and eco-friendly aspects of ET from the Korean War to 1978. Wide area IT networks developed rapidly from 1990 to 2000. However, in 2010, urban spaces began to develop by the fusion of the Environment and Information. The fusion of Environment and Information in the development trends in the past is referred to as "Individual Development", that in the present is referred to as "Semi-fusion Development" and that in the future will be referred to as "Total Fusion Development". Third, the mechanism structure of DMC has evolved through creation, extinction and fusion processes. The creation process will serve to supplement the insufficiencies of the existing systems, the extinction process will be the compactification of the fusion process, and the fusion process will be the standard for creation and extinction. Finally, the future of new innovative urban and architectural spaces will be forged by the mechanism symbolization patterns of IT ET.

  • Underwater images often suffer from color distortion, blurring and low contrast, which is caused by the propagation of light in the underwater environment being affected by the two processes: absorption and scattering. To cope with the poor quality of underwater images, this paper proposes a multiscale fusion underwater image enhancement method based on channel attention mechanism and local binary pattern (LBP). The network consists of three modules: feature aggregation, image reconstruction and LBP enhancement. The feature aggregation module aggregates feature information at different scales of the image, and the image reconstruction module restores the output features to high-quality underwater images. The network also introduces channel attention mechanism to make the network pay more attention to the channels containing important information. The detail information is protected by real-time superposition with feature information. Experimental results demonstrate that the method in this paper produces results with correct colors and complete details, and outperforms existing methods in quantitative metrics.

  • A electro-foaming fusion wrap fitting for polyethylene sewer pipe was built and foaming mechanism has been studied. A foaming sheet, supporting sheet and clamping band is assembled into a all-in-one structured electro-foaming fusion wrap fitting. To specify foaming and fusion of electro-foaming fusion wrap for PE sewer pipe, series of fusion tests were performed in various conditions. A parallel plate compression test up to 50 % of inner diameter deflection has been performed to check integrity of fusion quality and it was found that there were no visible signs of crack in wrapped area of fitting. Also air tightness test based on KS M 3511-2 has been performed to evaluate perfectness of wrap fusion quality and we found there were no pressure drop up to 10 times higher value than KS standard regulation.

  • The growth of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy and its progress over the years for use in post-operative bone growth has been revolutionary in its effect on bone tissue proliferation and vascular flow. However, further progress in PEMF therapy has been difficult due to lack of more evidence-based understanding of its mechanism of action. Our objective was to review the current understanding of bone growth physiology, the mechanism of PEMF therapy action along with its application in spinal surgery and associated outcomes. The authors of this review examined multiple controlled, comparative, and cohort studies to compare fusion rates of patients undergoing PEMF stimulation. Examining spinal fusion rates, a rounded comparison of post-fusion outcomes with and without bone stimulator was performed. Results showed that postoperative spinal surgery PEMF stimulation had higher rates of fusion than control groups. Though PEMF therapy was proven more effective, multiple factors contributed to difficulty in patient compliance for use. Extended timeframe of treatment and cost of treatment were the main obstacles to full compliance. This review showed that PEMF therapy presented an increased rate of recovery in patients, supporting the use of these devices as an effective post-surgical aid. Given the recent advances in the development of PEMF devices, affordability and access will be much easier suited to the patient population, allowing for more readily available treatment options.

  • Named entity recognition (NER) is an important basic task in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Recently deep learning approaches by extracting word segmentation or character features have been proved to be effective for Chinese Named Entity Recognition (CNER). However, since this method of extracting features only focuses on extracting some of the features, it lacks textual information mining from multiple perspectives and dimensions, resulting in the model not being able to fully capture semantic features. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel Multi-view Semantic Feature Fusion Model (MSFM). The proposed model mainly consists of two core components, that is, Multi-view Semantic Feature Fusion Embedding Module (MFEM) and Multi-head Self-Attention Mechanism Module (MSAM). Specifically, the MFEM extracts character features, word boundary features, radical features, and pinyin features of Chinese characters. The acquired font shape, font sound, and font meaning features are fused to enhance the semantic information of Chinese characters with different granularities. Moreover, the MSAM is used to capture the dependencies between characters in a multi-dimensional subspace to better understand the semantic features of the context. Extensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets show that our method improves the overall performance of the CNER model.

  • Myoblast fusion is important for skeletal muscle formation. Even though the knowledge of myoblast fusion mechanism has accumulated over the years, the initial signal of fusion is yet to be elucidated. Our study reveals the novel function of a phosphatidylserine (PS) receptor, stabilin-2 (Stab2), in the modulation of myoblast fusion, through the recognition of PS exposed on myoblasts. During differentiation of myoblasts, Stab2 expression is higher than other PS receptors and is controlled by calcineurin/NFAT signaling on myoblasts. The forced expression of Stab2 results in an increase in myoblast fusion; genetic ablation of Stab2 in mice causes a reduction in muscle size, as a result of impaired myoblast fusion. After muscle injury, muscle regeneration is impaired in Stab2-deficient mice, resulting in small myofibers with fewer nuclei, which is due to reduction of fusion rather than defection of myoblast differentiation. The fusion-promoting role of Stab2 is dependent on its PS-binding motif, and the blocking of PS-Stab2 binding impairs cell-cell fusion on myoblasts. Given our previous finding that Stab2 recognizes PS exposed on apoptotic cells for sensing as an "eat-me" signal, we propose that PS-Stab2 binding is required for sensing of a "fuse-me" signal as the initial signal of myoblast fusion.
