In any rapid prototyping process, the layer by layer building process introduces an area error between the staircase and the surface line specified by the computer-aided design model. This affects the dimensional accuracy as well as the surface finish for different part build orientations. This paper describes a methodology for computing the area error for any orientation of the part built by the fused deposition modelling system. This technique can be applied to determine the best build orientation of the part, based on the minimum area error. This technique is verified by comparing the results with the experimental measurements of the area error of the parts built at different orientations.

Nowadays, Industrial competition power is depended on that rapidly produce the customized products. Therefor, it is necessary to reduce period of product development. Thus, concurrent engineering that work many process at a time was appeared and Rapid prototyping was appeared, it is method that rapidly produce the prototype. If the graphic model was made by CAD, the prototype can be made in short term. That provide what the part was directly tested by the worker. It provide a worker with believable data. We study on the influence of surface roughness on injection interval and part angle at FDM.
In this study, product design and prototype manufacturing of a plastic water-pump pulley has been tried. The designed model is supposed to be made of 33 % glass reinforced resin of which the tensile strength is 180 MPa, and has 24 ribs on each side to increase its structural strength. Structural analysis under a static load of 300 kgf acting on both edges of the belt has been carried out using a commercial finite element code, MARC. The analysis result showed the maximum effective stress near a rib of designed model would be at most 35 MPa (less than 20% of the tensile strength), therefore, the plastic product would be sufficiently safe under that loading condition. On the basis of the structural analysis, a prototype of the designed model has been manufactured by using the fused deposition modelling (FDM) method which is one of the rapid prototyping (RP) methods, using ABS resin and support materials. The CAD data exported to the RP system in STL format was prepared by a commercial solid modeling software, SolidWorks. It has been proved that the plastic pulley can successfully replace the existing flow-formed steel product.

Recently, the demand for eco-friendly parts has increased to reduce materials and parts that use fossil fuels. This has exacerbated the increase of energy prices and the enforcement of regulations by environmental agencies. Currently, polylactic acid (PLA) is a solution, as a common and eco-friendly material. PLA is a biodegradable material that can replace traditional petrochemical polymers. PLA has great advantages since it is resistant to cracking and shrinkage. When it is manufactured, there are few harmful byproducts. Improvement in the brittleness characteristics is another important task to be monitored throughout the production of industrial parts. Improvement in the brittleness property of products lowers the tensile strength and tensile elasticity modulus of the parts. This study focused on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed PLA parts. Tensile tests are performed while varying the infill print parameters to evaluate the applicability of PLA in several industrial areas.

With the goal of tissue regeneration for organs damaged through an accident or a disease, research on tissue engineering has been conducted to produce 3-D scaffolds that can support the cells in the attachment and growth for the cell proliferation and differentiation. A scaffold requires a suitable pore size and porosity to increase the nutrient circulation or oxygen supply for the attachment and growth of cells. The existing production methods such as solvent-casting particulate leaching, phase separation, and fiber bonding have certain disadvantages. With these methods, it is difficult to obtain a free desired shape. In addition, certain pore sizes and interconnectivities among the pores may not be guaranteed. To solve these problems, this study has fabricated a scaffold with a 3-D shaped nose using Alginate, which is a natural polymer obtained through Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), one of the CAD/CAM-based Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) methods.

The structure of the femur bone was analyzed. Moreover, the mechanical strength of the bone was determined by considering two parameters, namely, the outer wall thickness and inner filling density to realize the 3D printing of a cortical bone and spongy bone by using a fused deposition modeling type 3D printer and ABS material. A basic experiment was conducted to evaluate the variation trend in the mechanical strength of the test specimens with the change in the parameters. Based on the results, the parameters corresponding to the highest mechanical strength were selected and applied to the artificial bone, and the mechanical strength of the artificial bones was examined under a load. Moreover, we proposed an approximation method for the 3D printing parameters to enable the comparison of the actual bones and artificial bones in terms of the strength and weight.

Traditionally, additive manufacturing (AM) technology has been used to fabricate prototypes in the early development phase of a product. This technology is being applied to release manufacturing of a product because of its low cost and fast fabrication. AM technology is a process of joining materials to fabricate a product from the 3D CAD data in a layer-by-layer manner. The orientation of a layer during manufacturing can affect the mechanical properties of the product because of its anisotropy. In this paper, tensile testing of polymer-based specimens were built with a typical AM process (FDM, PolyJet and SLA) to study the mechanical properties of the AM materials. The ASTM D 638 tensile testing standard was followed for building the specimens. The mechanical properties of the specimens were determined on the basis of stress-strain curves formed by tensile tests. In addition, the fracture surfaces of the specimens were observed by SEM to analyze the results.

The geometry and the defect of the groove of the part provoke a sudden change of stress in a local region. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of the geometry and the imperfection of a small groove on stress distributions in the vicinity of the joined region for the ABS part with a thin wall using a three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). Several types of groove are designed to improve joining characteristics in the vicinity joined region. The imperfection model of the small-sized groove is obtained from observation of deposition characteristics of a fused deposition modeling process. Local stress distributions in the vicinity of the joined region are predicted by the FE model with refined meshes. The influence of the angle and the imperfection of the groove on appearance regions of the maximum stress and distributions of the defined principal stress for different loading conditions is examined using the results of FEAs. Finally, a proper design of the groove is proposed to improve joining characteristics between the substrate and the ABS part.

In this paper, the performances of the electrical characteristics of the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D-printed flexible resistance sensor was evaluated. The FDM 3D printing flexible resistive sensor is composed of flexible-material thermoplastic polyurethane and a conductive PLA (carbon black conductive polylactic acid) polymer. While 3D printing, polymer filaments heat up quickly before being extruded and cooled down quickly. Polymers have poor thermal conductivity so the heating and cooling causes unevenness, which then results in internal stress on the printed parts due to the rapidity of the heating and cooling. Electrical resistance measurements show that the 3D-printed flexible sensor is unstable due to internal stress, so the 3D-printed flexible sensor resistance curve does not match the increases and decreases in the displacement curve. Therefore, annealing was performed to eliminate the mismatch between electrical resistance and displacement. Annealing eliminates residual stress on the sensor, so the electrical resistance of the sensor increases and decreases in proportion to displacement. Additionally, the resistance is lowered in comparison to before annealing. The results of this study will be very useful for the fabrication of various devices that employ 3D-printed flexible sensor that have multiple degrees of freedom and are not limited by size and shape.

We propose a new method to visualize 3D models for FDM (Fused Deposition. Modeling) printing that appearance of the printed results can be predicted more realistically as that the efficiency of the modeling-printing process can be improved. The layered nature of horizontal slicing and the vibratory nozzle movements of customer-level FDM 3D printers leaving the characteristic patterns of noisy stripes on the surfaces of printed objects make difficulties in prediction of printed result in company with the thermal contraction of filament material. First, our method analyses the G-codes generated by common slicers to obtain proper outlines and take advantages of a modified version of Perlin noise based texturing method for rendering efficiency and enough number of control parameters on the visual details. The results show improved rendering details of pre-visualization of FDM printing.
