  • The drop handle in the Chosun-Dynasty played a role lifting up the cabinet and box which was attached to and besides this had the decoration function. The scope of this study should include the drop handles from the $18^{th}$ century up to now by investigating and analyzing their definition & function and furthermore the types of their designs. The object of the study was the drop handle having 2 golden fixing parts which are definitive difference from ring or loop, and the design typology of drop handle was concentrated on the handle part, and it can be classified in two types. The one is the figuration of bow, bat, bamboo, fish and bird and so on from the motive of nature on the handle part, and the other one is the drop handle of the simple ㄷ-shape, the temple-symbol shape or geometrical forms. According to the analysis of relics & literature from the past it was found that there were more quantitative nature-motive figurations than the geometrical forms. The nature-motive figurations were again classified in box-, bat-, cloud- bamboo-, fish- and bird-type, and the geometrical forms in ㄷ-shape, the temple-symbol shape and others. The cases applied to furniture are roughly divided into the front-attached type and the side-attached type. In comparison of the drop handle in the Chosun-Dynasty with that of modern times, ㄷ-shape and bow-type keep the long tradition of the drop handles despite of the constructive change partly. Ring-type is similar to the just ring or loop of the part and drop handle with one golden fixing part, while the knob-type shows almost same forms in the past as well as in the modern times. Which type among handles in the modern times has little connection with the past is the reclaimed type, and it was showed in the Chosun-Dynasty and also is showed up to now identically that the man-made hole on the front side of the drawer for the function as handle.

  • This is a study and work of furniture design adopted from a natural phenomenon, especially from the changing shapes of the moon. The drawer of furniture, a part frequently contacted with our hand (human body) is well related to the symbolism of the moon, which includes life conception and fertility. I created various forms of drawer handle shaped from the moon phases, which give a furniture design esthetical, symbolic and formative meanings. The characteristics of my drawer furniture designs are classified into 3 types. First, as the volumes of drawers increase, the handle shapes also change differently: old moon, crescent, half moon and full moon. Second, without keeping time order, drawers may have the same sizes with handles freely selected and arranged by formative accounts. Third, both increasingly changing type and freely selected and arranged type are combined to make a composite structure. In their simple geometric forms, these furnitures can provide nature intimacy, which fulfill the needs of our time.

  • The aim of this study is to develop and suggest the handle for lockers according to the design process which are used for keeping of student's personal stuffs such as books, writing implements and gym uniform in elementary, middle and high school and university as well. This includes the design development for ILGUMTUR which is specialized for office furniture, but does not own the intellectual property right yet. The design concept based on the domestic locker market survey is recessed handle at low- to intermediate price and it's material should be plastic what is solid and light. The lock system should be constructed by molding process and the name plate can be exchanged every time the owner of locker changes. Contrary to the right angle of it's external appearance, the handle of the locker is designed to be softly round and the simplicity is pursued for an easy production. On the basis of this design concept the sketch has been drawn and upgraded in full by 3D-rendering. Then the mock-up has been completed by 3D printer and ILGUMTUR has obtained a patent for the locking system based on the rotation of 2 circles.

Meanwhile huge furniture had Butchimdae which can be used also as the locking mechanisms, or just the locks which were used as handle. The handle type included the idea of shamanism that desiring health and longevity, scholarly spirit and prosperity of descendants, therefore the design metaphorically contained the shape of the long-living and prolific animals and plants. • This paper studied the materials of the furniture which the noble men used in Goryeo, based on the furniture material category of solid wood furniture, lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl and hardware. As for the solid wood furniture, the wood and furniture types are inferred based on the documents. The trees used for the wood furniture were zelkova, korean willow, pine, royal paulownia, maidenhair tree, korean pine, chinese juniper and elm. The furniture types were table, chair, wooden bench, small portable table, writing table, and folding screen. As to the types of lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, most of them were hams with top, which were made of abalone shells. The features of the lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl were in detail and elaborate like the pattern of the full bloomed chrysanthemum. Writing tables were also made of lacquerware as pieces of furniture. Distinctively, the mother-of-pearl furniture material was popular enough to be used even in a horse saddle. Regarding the metal feldspar used as both a practical use and decoration, there are drop handle, hinge, the front basis, and lock seen in the artifacts, which were made of cast iron, bronze, and brass. Their manufacture techniques were eojamoon, bratticing and sheet metal. Through this study of the furniture materials used in Goryeo, it seems that Goryeo furniture focused on the functions rather than on the decorations, and in turn the forms were simple and basic. The technique of mother-of-pearl, a bit elaborate one, was used in the props furniture like kitchen wares, hams, or writing talbes. Probably, the solid wood is inferred to be used in a low wooden bench, a chair, and a table based on the documents.

  • The article aims to making a comparison between traditional Korean and Western furniture metal handles to give the detail information of the handle terms by analyzing the related literature including internet and interviews. In terms of that, the Korean and Western metal handles are compared in the types, components, materials, methods, and terms affecting the development made by the craftsmen before the Industrial Revolution about the mid or late 18th century. As a result, first, ring and drop pull handles were mostly and wooden knobs were a little used to open the furniture doors and drawers. The Korean drop pulls, Deulswae, came out after the ring pulls, Gori, while the Western drops called loop or bail handles as well, came out before the ring pulls. Second, the components were composed by ring, Gori, loop or bail, Deulswae, Post, Baemok, washer, Baemokbatchim, and backplate, Deulswaebatchim. Most of the Western handles were fastened by the bolt and nut, while the post of two strips, Baemok, fastened the Korean metal handles. Third, the metal handles were created of brass and iron mostly, gilded gold and silver. Forth, the method were largely used by casting, engraving, forging, plating, and hammering in the Korean handles, and by casting, molding, engraving, and stamped in the Western handles. Finally, the terms such as "knobs, pulls, drops, ring and drop pulls, loop or bail handles, posts, washers, backplate, casting, molding, engraving, forging, plating, and stamped" were clarified by the two comparison in Korean and English.

  • In a product environment where various product-service systems (PSSs) are already being provided, the provision of a different type of PSS is difficult for second movers but necessary for their sustainability and differentiation. Despite the importance of providing distinguishing PSSs to market, prior PSS studies have not effectively considered the influence of existing PSSs in their methods. In response, we suggest an approach to generate new PSS concepts by employing general needs (GNs) and business system evolution patterns (BSEPs). Our approach 1) identifies customer GNs fulfilled by existing PSSs, 2) generates advanced PSS ideas from an evolutionary perspective by mapping the existing PSSs onto BSEPs, and 3) selects PSS ideas that can meet the unfulfilled or insufficiently considered GNs using a GN-PSS linking matrix, thereby generating new PSS concepts based on the selected ideas. The workings and practicability of this approach are illustrated using a PSS case study of furniture industry. This approach would provide PSS planners with an ability to generate the differentiated PSS concepts that handle the customer needs that have been untapped throughout a product's lifecycle. In addition, this approach as a module will have a synergetic effect when incorporated with other PSS methodologies.
