  • Background: India shows some of the highest rates of cervical cancer worldwide, and more than 70% of the population is living in rural villages. Prospective cohort studies to determine the risk factors for cervical cancer are very rare from low and medium resource countries. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of risk factors related to cervical cancer in a rural setting in South India. Material and methods: Sociodemographic and reproductive potential risk factors for cervical cancer were studied using the data from a cohort of 30,958 women who constituted the unscreened control group in a randomised screening trial in Dindigul district, Tamilnadu, India. The analysis was accomplished with the Cox proportional hazard regression model. Results: Women of increasing age (HR=2.4; 95% CI: 1.6, 3.8 in 50-59 vs 30-39), having many pregnancies (HR=7.1; 1.0, 52 in 4+ vs 0) and no education (HR=0.6; 0.2, 0.7 in high vs none) were found to be at significantly increased risk of cervical cancer. Conclusion: This cohort study gives very strong evidence to say that education is the fundamental factor among the sociodemographic and reproductive determinants of cervical cancer in low resource settings. Public awareness through education and improvements in living standards can play an important role in reducing the high incidence of cervical cancer in India. These findings further stress the importance of formulating public health policies aimed at increasing awareness and implementation of cervical cancer screening programmes.

  • Essential oil yields and chemical compositions from 5 populations of Chamaecyparis obtusa with several environmental factors were investigated through essential oil extracted distillation apparatus and metabolite profiling by GC-MS analysis. Among the populations, content of essential oil at Gokseong was significantly higher than other populations. To compare the several environmental factors affecting on chemical composition and essential oil yields from C. obtuse at Gokseong, the environmental factors (soil condition, temperature, humidity, and moisture content) were measured during 1 year. The essential oils at Goksung based on humidity on March, July, and November was significantly different from other months. The essential oils at Goksung based on temperature on July and August was significantly different from other months. The essential oils at Goksung based on the moisture content on September were significantly different from other months. The percentage of T-N, OM, and yield of oil at Gokseong were significantly different on from other populations. The main constituents of C. obtusa at all populations were ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, ${\alpha}$-terpinene, ${\gamma}$-terpinene, terpinene-4-ol, isobonyl acetate, terpinyl acetate, and cedar acetate. Specially, Essential oil compositions (%) of ${\alpha}$-terpinene and cedar acetate were higher at Gokseong than at other populations. The chemical compositions of essential oils were variable depend on populations and environmental conditions. Therefore, this study might be used as fundamental research on study for selection of high productive terpenoids and for understanding about biosynthesis of essential oils in C. obtusa.

  • Wound healing is the result of interaction of normal cellular and biochemical responses that restore the interrupted anatomical structure in limited period. When any response of them is impaired, it results in chronic wound. The factors that influence the wound healing process is not only limited to the fundamental disease of the individual but also the local factors, especially various growth factors secreted from the various cells involved in tissue regeneration have important role. Recent reports that the chronic wounds are depleted of these growth factors have led active studies on the alteration of local wound environment with manipulation of the growth factors and the its application in management of chronic wounds. We investigated the effect on the chronic wounds in 10 patients with various pathologic conditions to suggest the appropriate application and guideline of the indication. The chronic wounds resulting from various causes in 10 patients were treated with rhPDGF gel and good wound care. All the chronic wounds were located on the lower extremity and the average diameter was 2.5 cm. 7 patients were completely cured within 8 weeks, however the patient who received previous radiation therapy the healing was delayed to 14 weeks. Two patients with vascular ulcer were not cured with rhPDGF alone. Local application of rhPDGF has yielded complete cure of the chronic wound in 70% of the patients within 2 months. The author suggests that it would be an effective alternative treatment modality of chronic wound when it is applied with good wound care and appropriate indication.

  • BACKGROUND: Silicon tetrachloride reacts with moisture in the atmosphere to generate hydrogen chloride, which affects the environment. Since silicon tetrachloride and its by-products are dispersed in the atmosphere in a short time after the silicon tetrachloride release into the atmosphere, it is difficult to directly assess the extent of environmental impact. In the present study, the exposure test of silicon tetrachloride or hydrogen chloride was examined in order to establish the criterion of the range affected by the silicon tetrachloride release, and the actual crops in the area exposed to silicon tetrachloride leakage were analyzed. METHODS AND RESULTS: For the experiment of exposure to silicon tetrachloride or hydrogen chloride, the leaves of red-pepper and corn were used in glass sealed containers. In the actual accident area, 59 samples from 10 different kinds of crops were collected. The pretreatment of the sample was performed by freezing and grinding, and then extracted using distilled water. The pH and concentration of chloride ($Cl^-$) ion of the extracted solution were measured using pH meter and ion chromatograph, respectively. CONCLUSION: Exposure to silicon tetrachloride caused visible damage, increasing the concentration of chloride ion, and decreasing the pH as well as hydrochloric acid. In the actual crops of the affected area, the tendency was the same as the result of the laboratory test, and the range of influence could be estimated through the concentration of $Cl^-$ ion over 2,000 mg/kg, and the correlation evaluation between the concentration of $Cl^-$ and pH. Therefore, the concentration of $Cl^-$ ion and the correlation between $Cl^-$ and pH would be considered as the factors to estimate the influence range of silicon tetrachloride release.
