We investigate determinants of fund investment flows using Korean equity investment funds. Unlike previous studies which analyzed net-flows (inflow minus outflow), we analyze fund investment inflows and outflows separately that should properly reflect investors' fund selection and redemption decision. We find similar effects of past return, fund age on net-flows to existing studies based on US market data. The analysis of determinants of inflows shows that inflows are related to past return, fund age and sales fee as net-flows. In contrast, outflows are found to behave quite differently from inflows. Apparently, asymmetry exists between fund investment inflows and outflows at the Korean fund selection market. Specifically, high past returns increase fund investment inflows while increase, rather than decrease, fund outflows. Moreover, 'convexity' is detected both in inflows and outflows: higher past returns accelerate outflows as well as inflows. Effects of sales fee also differ between inflows and outflows. In the 'affiliated' fund sample, sales fee is negatively related to inflows while positively related to outflows. In the 'unaffiliated' fund sample, sales fee is positively related to inflows, but no significant relationship exists with outflows. Empirical findings of this paper imply that the rational investor's fund selection view cannot provide a consistent explanation of the Korean fund selection market. In particular, the positive and convex relationship between past returns and fund outflows is inconsistent with the rational investor view. The fact that investor's fund investment appears to display 'disposition effect', which has been reported by studies of individual investors' stock investment behaviour suggests that the behavioral finance view should be a part of explanation for the Korean fund selection market. In addition, the strikingly different patterns between the 'affiliated' funds and the 'unaffiliated' funds, imply that brokers' incentive structure is another prevailing factor for fund investment flows.

This study examines the relation between mutual fund performance and fund flows in Korean market using weekly and monthly data. The results are as follows. First, the relation between the two variables varies across fund types. Even the relations in equity fund and index fund are different from each other. Second, the structural change in the mutual fund market affect significantly the relation between the two variables. Third, return chasing flow is observed constantly in bond fund and it is observed only after the structural change for equity fund and MMF. However, no return chasing flow is observed for index fund. Fourth, mutual fund flows affect subsequent fund returns only in MMF after the structural change.
In this study, I analyzed determinant factors of mutual fund return. The samples was distributed into three types according to the ratio of included stocks in funds. The proxies of mutual funds were set up three ways(returns of fund). As a result of the analysis, I found that growth positively affect to fund return, abnormal return and adjusted abnormal return in all samples. While, according to three types of sample, expected and unexpected fund cash flows had differently effect on fund return. Inferentially, it seemed that the ratio of included stocks in fund was the cause of that. But price pressure hypothesis are not supported. In conclusion, it was not found the possibility of stock market disturbance in this analysis.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to show the need to use the past long-term returns for investment decisions in U.S. equity funds and to suggest an investment strategy using long-term returns. Design/methodology/approach - This study solves the problem of high return volatility in long-term returns and proposes new investment portfolios based on the behavior of fund investors according to past returns. For the investment portfolio of this study, 60 months are divided into several periods and the average of the performance ranks for each period is used. Findings - First, funds with high average returns over multiple periods have lower future outflows and higher future returns than funds with high 60-month cumulative returns. Second, funds with low average returns over multiple periods have lower future inflows and lower future returns than funds with low 60-month cumulative returns. The findings mean that when making decisions based on past long-term returns, it is a smarter investment choice to buy funds with high average returns over multiple periods and sell funds with low average returns over multiple periods. Research implications or Originality - This study shows that it is necessary to use long-term returns in fund investment by analyzing the characteristics of the portfolio based on past returns. In addition, the study is meaningful in that it suggests a way to use long-term returns more efficiently based on the behavior of fund investors and shows that such investments lead to higher returns in the future.
This paper examines the existence of the fund performance persistence and the smart money effect in Korean stock market and tests the flow-induced price pressure (FIPP) hypothesis, that is, fund flows affect individual stock returns and mutual fund performance. This paper also tests whether the FIPP effect can cause the performance persistence using the monthly returns and stock holdings data of 2,702 Korean mutual funds from January 2002 to June 2008. The empirical results indicate that the performance persistence exists significantly for a long time but the smart money effect does not. The hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past 12 months performance and selling funds with the lowest past 12 months performance earns 0.11%~1.05% monthly abnormal returns, on average, in 3 years from portfolio formation month, but the hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past net fund inflows and selling funds with the lowest past net fund inflows cannot earn positive monthly abnormal returns and the size of negative abnormal returns of the portfolio increase as time goes on. We find the evidence that the FIPP hypothesis is significantly supported. We first estimate the FIPP measure for each individual stock using the trading volume resulting from past fund flows and then construct the hedge portfolio by buying stocks with the highest FIPP measure and selling stocks with the lowest FIPP measure. That portfolio earns significantly positive abnormal return, 1.01% at only portfolio formation month and cannot earn significant abnormal returns after formation month. But, the FIPP effect cannot cause the performance persistence because, within the same FIPP measure group, funds with higher past performance still earn higher monthly abnormal returns than those with lower past performance by 0.08%~0.77%, on average, in 2 years. These results imply that the main cause of the performance persistence in Korean stock market is the difference of fund managers' ability rather than the FIPP effect.
This paper examines the dynamic relationship between fund flow and market risk at the aggregate level and explores whether sudden sharp changes in fund flow (fund run) can cause a systemic risk in the Korean financial markets. We use daily and weekly data and regression and VAR analysis. Main results of the paper are as follows: First, in the stock market, a concurrent and a lagged unexpected fund flows have a positive relationship with market volatility. A positive shock in fund flow predicts an increase in stock market volatility. In the bond market, an unexpected fund flow has a negative relationship with the default risk premium, but a positive relationship with the term premium. And an unexpected fund flow of the money market fund has a negative relationship with the liquidy risk, but the explanatory power is very low. Second, for examining whether changes in fund flow induce a systemic risk, we construct a spillover index based on the forecast error variance decomposition of VAR model. A spillover index represents that how much the shock in fund flow can explain the change of market risk in a market. In general, explanatory powers from spillover indexes are so fluctuant and low. In the stock market, the impact of shocks in fund flow on market risk is relatively high and persistent during the period from the end of 2007 to 2008, which is the subprime-mortgage crisis period. In bond market, since the end of 2008, the impact of shocks in fund flow spreads to default risk continually, while in the money market, such a systematic effect doesn't take place. The persistent patterns of spillover effect appearing around a certain period in the stock market and the bond market suggest that the shock to the unexpected fund flow may increase the market risk and can be a cause of systemic risk in the financial markets. However, summarizing the results of regression and VAR model analysis, and considering the very low explanatory power of spillover index analysis, we can conclude that changes in fund flow have a very limited power in explaining changes in market risk and it is not very likely to induce the systemic risk by a fund run in the Korean financial markets.
Kyoto Protocol is an international convention on concrete performance program for UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), which regulate and prevent to global warming and officially came into effect on February 16, 2005. Kyoto flexible mechanisms, the agreed environmental system in March 1997 in the Third Conference of Parties in UNFCCC General Assembly, Emission Trading System(ETS), Clean Development Mechanism(CDM) and Joint Implementation(JI), are key policies related to environment. In advanced countries, greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced average 5.2% level compared to 1990 in total emissions during 2008-2012. World leading carbon market finished the trial on the EU ETS I greenhouse gas emissions trading system, EU ETS II is operated regularly after 2008. World Bank leads to make 'Prototype Carbon Fund(PCF)' in April 2004, which is the world first carbon fund and a representative public carbon fund type, World Bank operate various funds including present PCF. Thus, I would like to propose as follows in relation to this study: First, in the validity analysis of carbon funds, it would be needed to analyze the Emission Reduction Cost Efficiency(ERCE) of carbon. The ERCE is a break-even value which brings the Net Present Value(NPV) to zero. NPV approach is used among projects and it enables potential projects to be compared and evaluated the ERCE on the basis of the net present value of net future cash flows. Therefore, according to results of analysis, carbon funds should be developed and invested. Second, it would be necessary to allow of issuing bonds together with carbon funds, carbon finance etc. Third, carbon funds, it would be reasonable to have a relatively enough maturity in project and as a financial derivatives in the international financial markets, it is needed various types of transactions. Fourth, it would be needed to standardize the carbon emissions trading for more efficiently. Fifth, it would be necessary to establish and invest in various kinds of domestic and overseas global carbon funds, including governments, privates, governments and privates sectors. And it is also needed to establish the medium and long term plans for carbon funds. Sixth, it would be needed to foster the advanced trade mechanisms for carbon funds in the most effective ways. Finally, carbon funds should be used in harmony with international societies to reduce global warming as the social responsible investing funds and it should be contribute to sustainable development. In addition, it would seem that carbon funds should be studied on establishing the contributable standard of sustainable development in the future assignment.
Prediction of the product shape in sheet casting process is performed from the numerical simulation. A three-dimensional finite element method is used to investigate the flow behavior and to examine the effects of processing conditions on the sheet produced. Effects of inertia, gravity, surface tension and non-Newtonian viscosity on the thickness profile of the sheet are considered since the edge bead and the flow patterns in the chill roll region have great influence on the quality of the products. In the numerical simulation with free surface flows, the spine method is adopted to update the free surface, and the force-free boundary condition is imposed along the take-up plane to avoid severe singularity problems existing at the take-up plane. From the numerical results of steady isothermal flows of a generalized Newtonian fluid, it is shown that the draw ratio plays a major role in predicting the shape of the final sheet produced and the surface tension has considerable effect on the bead thickness ratio and the bead width fraction, while shear-thinning and/or tension-thickening viscosity affect the degree of neck-in.

This study is the first to analyze performance of Taiwanese domestic equity funds between January 2009 and October 2014, the period during which quantitative redirected capital flows toward developing economies and the Taiwanese Stock Exchange Weighted Index compounded at approximately 12.9% annually. Adopting methods endorsed by earlier research, we evaluated 15 Taiwanese equity funds' performance relative to market averages using the Sharpe (1966) and Treynor (1965) ratios and Jensen's alpha method (1968). To test market timing proficiency, we applied the Treynor and Mazuy (1966) and Henriksson and Merton (1981) regression analysis methods. Jensen's alpha method (1968) was used to measure fund managers' stock selection skills. Results revealed that funds significantly under-performed Taiwan's average annual market return and demonstrated no exceptional stock-selection skills and market timing proficiency during the era of quantitative easing.
Korean government has launched a new public rental housing policy for younger generation suffering from instable housing conditions in CBD area. This paper is to analyze the financial feasibility of urban public rental housing projects, based on its cash flows. Urban rental housing projects should find out the way to reduce costs and to secure cheap land, because of the high land price in CBD area and complex relationship of legal rights. Project types are categorized by the land acquisition method and district characteristics. For 10 sample projects, financial feasibility was analyzed. Cash flows were calculated on the design plan and 16 scenarios were made by combining 4 important variables. The variables are increase rate of land price, increase rate of monthly rents, ratio of public and market rents, and the interest rate of National Housing Fund. The findings are as follows. Government land rent-type can reduce initial costs because it is not necessary to buy land. However, total NPV is lowered at the time of liquidation due to the land return. Private land acquisition-type require more initial costs. But the NPV at liquidation time increases with land disposal. To improve financial feasibility, acquisition-type should be preferred in high land-price area and rent-type should be preferred in low land-price area. Among influencing variables, the rate of increase in land price and the ratio of public and market rents turned out to be the most important. Although the ratio of public and market rents can be controllable, high ratio will cause the burden of tenants. Therefore, interest rate adjustment of National Housing Fund is more desirable.
