  • This study aims to explore the status and adoption pattern of next generation OPAC functionalities employed in Korean academic libraries. The paper is useful for future planning of next generation OPAC in academic libraries. This study firstly extracted major functionalities of next generation OPAC by reviewing literature and then the pilot test was conducted to validate them. The websites of 191 academic libraries in Korea were surveyed. For the accuracy of the data, the two researchers examined in redundant. The collected data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18. 'Simple search box' was found to be the most popular function. The second popular function was 'search within results'. A few libraries used the 'clustering', 'open search plug-in', 'sort by relevance', and 'correct spelling error'.

  • Presented in this study is a top-down functional modeling procedure and the desired functionalities of energy management system (EMS). For the purpose of top-down modeling for EMS, energy management system is categorized into 7 subsystems based on common functionalities and energy management life cycle. After that, benchmarking analysis of commercially major EMS products is conducted. As a result of this analysis, desired functionalities of each subsystem of EMS are suggested in this study. This study is served as a useful guidance about essential functional requirements of energy management system to the practitioners involved in the development or introduction of EMS.

  • In this paper, a method to generate the extended model automatically on the critical elements in enterprise system based real time distributed architecture as well as the platform specific model(PSM) for Microsoft(MS) .NET platform is proposed. The key ideas of this method are real time distributed architecture should performed with satisfying strict constraints on life cycle of object and response time such as synchronization, transaction and so on, and .NET platform is able to implement functionalities including before mentioned by only specifying Attribute Code and maximizing advantages of MDA. In order to realize the ideas, functionalities which should be considered enterprise system development are specified and these are to be defined in Meta Model and extended UML profile. In addition, after definition of UML profile for .NET specification, by developing and applying these into plug-in of open source MDA tool, and extended models are generated automatically through this tool. Accordingly, by using proposed specification technology, the profile and tools easily and quickly reusable extended model can be generated even though low level of detailed information for functionalities which is considered in .NET platform and real time distributed architecture. In addition, because proposed profile is MOF which is basis of standard extended and applied, UML and MDA tools which observed MOF is reusable.

  • We have introduced polyelectrolyte micro-patterning technique employing agarose plane stamp and a hard substrate having microscale features on its surface. With this method, chemically micropatterned surfaces with both positive and negative functionalities were successfully embedded in well-defined microstructures, and selective impartment of charge functionalities was confirmed by patterning bead bearing surface charge. Furthermore, this technique allows highly sensitive immobilization of protein onto targeted surface simply by endowing functionalities, which extends the potential of its use as a tool for high-throughput protein microarray and proteomics. Because plane agarose stamp is free of structures on its surface, there is no concern for pattern collapse, and the combination of agarose plane stamp with patterned substrate is more suited for selective protein patterning compared with adopting surface-patterned agarose stamp with flat substrate. Our technique using agarose plane stamp and a substrate having microscale features on its surface suggests a range of possible applications, including the micropatterning of biofunctionalized copolymer having polyelectrolyte block, immobilization of micro- and nanoparticle with biofunctionalities such as biotin and streptavidine, and establishing optoelectronic microstructures with micro-beads on various surfaces.

  • Reliable functionalities for autonomous navigation and object recognition/handling are key technologies to service robots for executing useful services in human environments. A considerable amount of research has been conducted to make the service robot perform these operations with its own sensors, actuators and a knowledge database. With all heavy sensors, actuators and a database, the robot could have performed the given tasks in a limited environment or showed the limited capabilities in a natural environment. With the new paradigms on robot technologies, we attempted to apply smart environments technologies-such as RFID, sensor network and wireless network- to robot functionalities for executing reliable services. In this paper, we introduce concepts of proposed smart environments based robot navigation and object recognition/handling method and present results on robot services. Even though our methods are different from existing robot technologies, successful implementation result on real applications shows the effectiveness of our approaches.

  • In this paper, we highlight the development of a web application system. Its main objective is to provide pathway visualization functionalities for inter-cytokine relationships, as well as for other types of relationships, with a specific cytokine(s) of interest. A natural language processor is first used to extract information from a certain web page that concerns the cytokine(s) of interest. The results obtained are then further processed and then displayed graphically to the user. The system displays how the cytokine(s) of interest interacts with other cytokines and cells. Useful information such as the type of reaction and catalyst involved, if any, are also displayed. In addition, the system also offers functionalities for graphical manipulations of the visualized pathways. The system has been shown to provide better overview, and hence, improved learning to readers who are new to this field by virtue of accurate inputs obtained from the natural language processing module.

  • Since software development team members have been more geographically spread due to the globalization of business and Internet technologies, the management of deliverables and communication efforts for developing high-quality software products on time is becoming more complicated. Among the functional requirements for collaborative software development management, the manipulation of shared information objects is essential for the collaborative work among distributed development team members. This paper proposes an integrated information object management framework comprised of a so-called BOC (Bill Of Class) scheme and a standardized software part dictionary for managing shared information objects efficiently among distributed co-workers. In order to manage these complex information objects, the proposed framework adopt product structures represented by Bills Of Materials (BOM) as stems for integrating the various information objects. Based on the proposed framework, a collaborative software development management system (CSDMS) is implemented, and the functionalities and the structure of the system are also described in this paper. The proposed system provides sufficient functionalities for the change management of information objects and the management of their relationship to other objects rather than existing system.

  • Urban regeneration is a large-scale program that must address challenges such as a significant number of involved projects, diverse participants and their conflicting objectives, and a long life span. In an effort to address these issues, the Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) is applied to urban regeneration in order to provide a guideline to enhance urban regeneration program management. Through a survey, three major functionalities required in the IETM are identified: process map provision, customized information delivery, and communication ability with other information systems. To achieve these functionalities, the development framework of the IETM and the associated technologies are examined. Its characteristics can be sum up ontology-driven metadata, user-oriented process map composition system and so on. Finally, the usage scenarios of the IETM are discussed.
