The purpose of this study is to identify the relation between functional limitation, functional disability and back pain during pregnancy. Data was collected by interview or self-report from 66 pregnant women between the gestational ages of 17 and 22 weeks who had experienced back pain from February 17 through July 28, 2001. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The prevalent mean week of back pain starting during pregnancy was 12.8. The mean pain intensity scores on the VAS during the past week and now were 5.6 and 3.7. The mean score on the functional limitations was 38.9. The mean score on the functional disability was 19.7. 2. The pain intensity on the past week was correlated with the pain intensity now (r=.339, p<0.01) and the functional limitations (r=.251, p<0.05). The pain intensity now was correlated with the functional limitations (r=.295, p<0.05) and the functional disability (r=.429, p<0.01). The functional limitations was correlated with the functional disability (r=.229, p<0.01). The higher pain intensity was the more functional limitation and functional disability occurred. 3. There was a statistically significant correlation between the pain intensity now and the type of housing (t=-2.051, p=.045), and back pain history before pregnancy (t=-2.429 p=.003). 4. There was a statistically significant correlation between the functional limitation and income (F=2.803, p=.047) and back pain history before pregnancy (t=-3.225, p=.002). There was a statistically significant correlation between the functional disability and back pain history before pregnancy (t=-3.058 p=.003). In conclusion, we found that a history of back pain was an important factor when predicting back pain and functional disability and limitation during pregnancy. The nurse and the prenatal educator should detect risk factors of back pain early in pregnancy and manage continuously though pregnancy.
Purpose. Despite the high prevalence of back pain and its subsequent effects in post-partum women, intervention programs are scarce. The purpose of this study was to test the effects of a back-pain-reducing program on post-partum women who experienced low-back pain during pregnancy. Methods. A non-equivalent control-group pretest-posttest design was used. Pregnant women who attended a hospital for prenatal check-ups and experienced back pain participated in an intervention program (n=27), and the results were compared with women in a control group from another hospital (n=25). Results. At 8 weeks post-partum, the pain intensity, functional limitations were lower in the intervention group than in the control group. However, differences in mean change of the pain intensity and functional limitations between 36 and 39 weeks of gestation and at 8 weeks post-partum were not statistically significant between the groups. Moreover, the flexibility, post-partum functional status, and post-partum depression did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusions. A back-pain-relief program in this study was not effective to reduce the back-pain intensity in post-partum women and to decrease the associated functional limitations. The implications for nursing practice and directions for future research are discussed.
This paper presents a novel test point insertion (TPI) method for a pseudo-random built-in self-test (BIST) to reduce the area overhead. Recently, a new TPI method for BISTs was proposed that tries to use functional flip-flops to drive control test points instead of adding extra dedicated flip-flops for driving control points. The replacement rule used in a previous work has limitations preventing some dedicated flip-flops from being replaced by functional flip-flops. This paper proposes a logic cone analysis-based TPI approach to overcome the limitations. Logic cone analysis is performed to find candidate functional flop-flops for replacing dedicated flip-flops. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method reduces the test point area overhead significantly with minimal loss of testability by replacing the dedicated flip-flops.
Purpose: To exam how functional status varied according to age, gender, stage, treatment protocols, and pathologic types of cancer in lung cancer patients. Method: A Cross-sectional and descriptive study was used. Functional status was measured with the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36. A total of 106 lung cancer patients participated. Their mean age was 61 years. Majorities were male, in advanced stages, and receiving chemotherapy. Result: Functional status of the subjects were relatively low compared to the results of previous studies. Women had more severe functional limitations in Role-Emotion(t=2.17, p <.05). Generally, older patients(> 60 yrs.) had relatively more severe limitations in all subcategories, but the difference was not statistically significant. Subjects in late lung cancer stage(stage III & IV) had more severe functional limitation in all subcategories. But the statistical difference was found only in General Health(t=2.10, p<.05). In terms of treatment protocol, no-current treatment group had lower General Health than those of the chemotherapy group(F=3.42, p<.01). There were no statistical differences in functional status among pathological cancer cell types. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that effective management may be achieved when these factors are considered on individual basis in the clinical management of lung cancer patients.

We developed research strategies for measuring functional performance and proprioception. We determined whether resistance training improves functional performance in the older adult, whether resistance training improves proprioceptive sense, and whether improvement in functional performance and/or proprioception are a direct result of the resistance training or a result of movement independent of strength gains. The answer to these questions will enable those in the sport fitness industry and medical practioners to better advise the growing number of older adults about the benefits of specific types of exercise. The will also enable the medical practitioner to prescribe appropriate exercise to those with limitations in functional ability in attempts to restore independent living.
This paper explores the ways in which the functions of local educational authority in Korea can be analyzed by systems thinking, and puts forward some policy leverage strategies to enhance predictability of education policy effects and also to prevent unanticipated side effects arising from it. In dong so, we sketch causal diagrams to depict functional changes of local educational authority, based on before and after comparison, and attempt to derive policy intervention points to minimize unforseen reactions from the stake-holders concerned. These diagrams make it possible for educational policy-makers to capture the feedback, stocks and flows, time delays, and non-linearities they identify, although they have some limitations. This paper concludes that newly-designed functions and structures for local educational authority may be accepted by the stake-holders including teachers and unions, only if complex systems surrounding functional changes regarding local educational authority can be clearly understood and relevant policy measures can be effectively taken before the functional changes happen.
Obesity is a serious health concern, which has been linked to an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases and some cancers. The traditional obesity control program is expensive. Moreover, it is difficult to maintain a healthy body weight as well as reduce body fat. The long-term use of effective and tolerable medication is carefully recommended to control body weight. In addition to obesity control medications, health functional foods, related to body weight control, have become popular in the commercial market. Known mechanisms include lipolysis, appetite control, inflammation reduction, and lean body mass maintenance. Previous clinical trials have documented the efficacy of some health functional foods; however, there are limitations. Studies on the potential roles and efficacy of some health functional foods, including caffeine, green tea, protein supplement, probiotics, and arginine, were reviewed. More large-scale and randomized placebo-controlled trials should be conducted eventually.
Korean government has implemented policies to strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium sized cities. However, since it is often difficult to enhance the competitiveness through individual projects, many local governments in metropolitan areas are working together to pursue local growth. On the other hand, small and medium sized cities that are not included in metropolitan areas due to their spatial limitations have difficulties in implementing effective growth policies. Given this background, the purpose of this study is to identify the functional correlation based on urban interactions and develop functional econometric model for the economic growth of small and medium sized cities. This study uses spatial econometrics models and functional weight matrix to identify the effects of functional networks on small and medium sized cities. The results show the effect of functional networks on the growth of small and medium sized cities and provide policy implications for regional spatial planning that addresses effective management of small and medium sized cities.
This study aims to provide managerial implications considering strategic priorities for maintaining existing customers and attracting new customers in extremely competitive coffee franchise market. In particular, this study is differentiated from other previous studies as it attempted to examine both direct and indirect impact relations among self-congruity, functional congruity, perceived value(utilitarian/hedonic value), and attitude. Also, this study shows the relative impact of utilitarian value and hedonic value on attitude. The results show that self-congruity has positive effects on functional congruity and value (hedonic and utilitarian value), while functional congruity has positive effects on utilitarian value, hedonic value, and attitude. Moreover, self-congruity has indirect effects on attitude through functional congruity and value. The findings also indicate that hedonic value has relatively higher impact on attitude than utilitarian value does. At the end of the paper, managerial implications and limitations were suggested.
