4-Aminobutyrate aminotransferase plays an essential role in the 4-aminobutyric acid shunt, converting 4-aminobutyrate to succinic semialdehyde. Recombinant 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferases were overexpressed as their catalytically active forms in E. coli by coproduction with thioredoxin and their solubilities were also dramatically increased. In order to study the structural and functional aspects of the C-terminal domain of brain 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase, we have constructed a C-terminal mutant of pig brain 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase and analyzed the functional and structural roles of C-terminal amino acids residues on the enzyme. The deletion of five amino-acid residues from C-terminus did not interfere with the kinetic parameters and functional properties of the enzyme. Also, the deletion did not affect the dimeric structure of the protein aligned along the subunit interface at neutral pH. However, the deletion of the C-terminal region of the protein changed the stability of its dimeric structure at acidic pH. The dissociation of the enzyme acidic, facilitated by the deletion of five amino acids from C-terminus, abolished the catalytic activity.
Retroviral integrases insert viral DNA into target DNA. In this process they recognize their own DNA specifically via functional domains. In order to analyze these functional domains, we constructed six chimeric integrases by swapping domains between HIV-1 and HFV integrases, and two point mutants of HFV integrase. Chimeric integrases with the central domain of HIV-1 integrase had strand transfer and disintegration activities, in agreement with the idea that the central domain determines viral DNA specificity and has catalytic activity. On the other hand, chimeric integrases with the central domain of HFV integrase did not have any enzymatic activity apart from FFH that had weak disintegration activity, suggesting that the central domain of HFV integrase was defective catalytically or structurally. However, these inactive chimeras were efficiently complemented by the point mutants (D164A and E200A) of HFV integrase, indicating that the central domain of HFV integrase possesses potential enzymatic activity but is not able to recognize viral or target DNA without the help of its homologous N-terminal and C-terminal domains.
Conducting Polypyrrole-lead titanate (PPy/PbTiO3) composites have been prepared by in situ deposition technique by placing different wt.% of fine grade powder of PbTiO3 (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%) during polymerization of pyrrole. The composites formed were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and these data indicate that PbTiO3 particles are dominating with an increase in crystallinity as well as thermal stability of the composites. The results on the low frequency dielectric studies which are obtained in the form of pressed pellet state are interpreted in terms of Maxwell Wagner polarization, which are responsible for the dielectric relaxation mechanism and frequency dependence of conductivity.
Electroencephalography (EEG) produces time-series data of neural oscillations in the brain, and is one of the most commonly used methods for investigating both normal brain functions and brain disorders. Quantitative EEG analysis enables identification of frequencies and brain activity that are activated or impaired. With studies on the structural and functional networks of the brain, the concept of the brain as a complex network has been fundamental to understand normal brain functions and the pathophysiology of various neurological disorders. Functional connectivity is a measure of neural synchrony in the brain network that refers to the statistical interdependency between neural oscillations over time. In this review, we first discuss the basic methods of EEG analysis, including preprocessing, spectral analysis, and functional-connectivity and graph-theory measures. We then review previous EEG studies of brain network characterization in several neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. Identifying the EEG-based network characteristics might improve the understanding of disease processes and aid the development of novel therapeutic approaches for various neurological disorders.

For the improvement of the anti-fouling features of porcelain electrical insulators, in this study, the surface of an insulator was coated with a functional material to expand the insulator's self-cleanness. The anti-fouling and mechanical features of the functional film coating of ceramic substrates made from components like an electrical insulator were analyzed. The coating methods that were used were spray coating, dip coating, and fabric coating. Following the coating, the contact angle of the coated surface was measured, revealing that the spray coating method offered the lowest angle ($13.7^{\circ}$) and a strong hydrophilic feature. The anti-fouling analysis showed that the anti-fouling features improved as the contact angle decreased. The mechanical properties - hardness and adhesion - were both excellent at 9H and 5B, respectively, regardless of the coating method that was used.
This study was carried out to identify the Rice black-streaked dwarf virus that infected maize plants collected from Gochang-gun in Jeollabukdo in 2005. The genomic dsRNA from infected plants was extracted and the genome pattern was analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Results of the electrophoresis revealed the already known to-segment genome and the difference of mobility was confirmed in isolates by collected areas. The RBSDV was identified from the result of RT-PCR using the template of extracted dsRNA and specific primer. The results of S10 cloned to pGEM-T vector and the conducted in sequence analysis consisted of 1,801nt and 559aa. This was of the same size as the RBSDV S10 identified in rice, and the change was confirmed in 18 base and displayed homology of 99%.
5-Nonylsalicylaldoxime and salicylaldehyde are two derivatives of phenolic compounds which are very applicable materials in industries. Formerly the formylation of phenolic derivatives were carried out by Rimer-Tiemann method. In this work both of these two materials were synthesized by magnesium meditated formylation technique and their structural characterizations were compared by instrumental analysis technique. In order to achieve a selectively orthoformylated product, the hydroxyl group of nonylphenol (or phenol) was first modified by magnesium methoxide. The nonylphenol magnesium salt was then formylated by paraformaldehyde. The oximation reaction was finally applied to the prepared nonylsalicylaldehyde magnesium salt by liquid extracting via water and acid washing and other extractions. The solvent was finally removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. Some instrumental analysis such as $^1H$-NMR, GC/MS and FT-IR spectra were taken on the product in order to interpret the reaction characterization quantitatively and qualitatively. The formaldehyde and oxime functional groups of two compounds were investigated through $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR spectra and were compared. The yield of methoxilation was very good and the yields of formylation and oximation reactions were about 90%and 85% respectively. The orthoselectivity of formylation reaction were evaluated by comparing of the relevant spectra. The GC/MS spectra also confirmed the obtained results.
Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are considered of great importance due to their high catalytic and antimicrobial activities. This study focuses on the preparation and characterization of CuNPs, and on their antibacterial/antifungal activities. A copper salt (copper sulfate pentahydrate) as precursor, starch as stabilizing agent, and ascorbic acid as reducing agent were used to fabricate CuNPs. The resulting product was characterized via different techniques such as X-ray diffractrometry (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to confirm its characteristic properties. Employing the Scherrer formula, the mean crystallite sizes of copper (Cu) and cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanocrystals were found to be 29.21 and 25.33 nm, respectively, as measured from the main X-ray diffraction peaks. The functional groups present in the resulting CuNPs were confirmed by FTIR. In addition, the engineered CuNPs showed antibacterial and antifungal activity against tested pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains.
Inulin fructotransferase (depolymerizing) (EC 2.4.1.93) was purified 34-fold from the culture broth of Arthrobacter sp. A-6 by using a combination of ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B chromatography and Sephacryl S-200 gel filtration. The purified enzyme converts inulin into di-D-fructofuranose dianhydride III(DFA III) and small quantities of fructo-oligosaccharides. The temperature and pH optima of the enzyme were $70^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. Molecular weight of the enzyme was determined to be 49 kDa by 12$%$ SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and 145 kDa by Sephacryl S-200gel filtration. This indicates that the functional inulin fructotransferase of Arthrobacter sp. A-6 has a homomeric trimer structure. The enzyme had an isoelectric point of pH 4.6. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified enzyme subunit was Ala-Asp-Asn-Pro-Asp-Gly(\ulcorner)-Ser-Asn-Met(or Glu)-Tyr-Asp-Val.

Understanding the molecular pathogenesis of the multifaceted host-pathogen interaction is critical in the development of improved treatment and prevention, as well as elucidating how certain bacteria can circumvent host defenses, multiply in the host, and cause such extensive damage. Disease caused by infection with V. vulnificus is remarkable for the invasive nature of the infection, ensuing severe tissue damage, and rapidly fulminating course. The characterization of somatic as well as secreted products of V. vulnificus has yielded a large list of putative virulence attributes, whose known functions are easily imagined to explain the pathology of disease. These putative virulence factors include a carbohydrate capsule, lipopolysaccharide, a cytolysin/hemolysin, elastolytic metalloprotease, iron sequestering systems, lipase, and pili. However, only few among the putative virulence factors has been confirmed to be essential for virulence by the use of molecular Koch's postulates. This presentation describes molecular biological characterization of the virulence factors contributing to survival as well as to toxigenesis of V. vulnificus.
