It's not easy to detect the high quality and functional compounds for control quality of food materials. The electronic nose was an instrument, which comprised of an array of electronic chemical sensors with partial specificity and an appropriate pattern recognition system, capable of recognizing simple or complex odors. It can conduct fast analysis and provide simple and straightforward results and is best suited for quality control and process monitoring in the field of functional foods. Numbers of applications of an electronic nose in the functional food industry include discrimination of habitats for medicinal food materials, monitoring storage process, lipid oxidation, and quality control of food and/or processing with principal component analysis, neural network analysis and the electronic nose based on GC-SAW sensor. The electronic nose would be possibly useful for a wide variety of quality control in the functional food and plant cultivation when correlating traditional analytical instrumental data with sensory evaluation results or electronic nose data.
Functional genomics aims at uncovering useful information carried on genome sequences and at using it to understand the mechanisms of biological function. Elucidating the unknown biological functions of new genes based upon the genomics rationales will greatly speed up the extensive understanding of biocatalysis and biodegradation in biological world including microorganisms. DNA microarrays generate a system for the simultaneous measurement of the expression level of thousands of genes in a single hybridization assay. Their data mining (transcriptome) strategy has two categories: differential gene expression and coordinated gene expression. Furthermore, measurement of proteins (proteome) generates information on how the transcribed sequences end up as functional characteristics within the cell, and quantitation of metabolites yields information on how the functional proteins act to produce energy and process substrates (metabolome). Various composite functional genomics databases containing genetic, enzymatic and metabolic information have been developed and will contribute to the understanding of the life blue print and the new discoveries and practices in biocatalysis and biodegradation that could enrich their industrial and environmental applications.
Dietary fiber imparts both mutritional and functional properties to foods. This review deals with (1) the classification of dietary fiber, (2) the plant cell wall models, (3) the relations between structure and physicochemical and functional properties of dietary fiber and (4) the applications of dietary fiber in foods. Dietary fiber can be classified in terms of source, plant function, solubility, charge and topology. Plant cell wall models are presented to provide information on the interconnections of dietary fiber components which determines the content of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber content. In reality, physicochemical and functional properties of dietary fiber originate factors such as chemical constituents , charge, branching degree, conformation and etc. Dietary fibers possess a variety of functional properties in food systems, which thus make them useful in food application. In particular, rheology and gelation of water-soluble gums or hydrocolloids are discussed for their effects on food quality. A guideline s also listed for the gum selection to meet the best product requirements.
The paper presents functional modelling and its application for diagnosis in nuclear power plants. Functional modelling is defined and its relevance for coping with the complexity of diagnosis in large scale systems like nuclear plants is explained. The diagnosis task is analyzed and it is demonstrated that the levels of abstraction in models for diagnosis must reflect plant knowledge about goals and functions which is represented in functional modelling. Multilevel flow modelling (MFM), which is a method for functional modelling, is introduced briefly and illustrated with a cooling system example. The use of MFM for reasoning about causes and consequences is explained in detail and demonstrated using the reasoning tool, the MFMSuite. MFM applications in nuclear power systems are described by two examples: a PWR; and an FBR reactor. The PWR example show how MFM can be used to model and reason about operating modes. The FBR example illustrates how the modelling development effort can be managed by proper strategies including decomposition and reuse.

Functional data analysis continues to attract interest because advances in technology across many fields have increasingly permitted measurements to be made from continuous processes on a discretized scale. Particulate matter is among the most harmful air pollutants affecting public health and the environment, and levels of PM10 (particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter) for regions of California remain among the highest in the United States. The relatively high frequency of particulate matter sampling enables us to regard the data as functional data. In this work, we investigate the dominant modes of variation of PM10 using functional data analysis methodologies. Our analysis provides insight into the underlying data structure of PM10, and it captures the size and temporal variation of this underlying data structure. In addition, our study shows that certain aspects of size and temporal variation of the underlying PM10 structure are associated with changes in large-scale climate indices that quantify variations of sea surface temperature and atmospheric circulation patterns.
Between a wide range of distributed applications, this work is particularly focused on those applications which allow a group of persons, who are geographically distributed, to interact and cooperate exchanging different kind of information in order to realize group activities in a common work environment. In this paper we realized a study of this kind of applications to identify general and functional characteristics which will then enable us to determine their communication requirements. Also, we analyzed the existent support architectures to examine whether they support multimedia cooperative applications. Based on the results of analysis, we proposed a set of communication functions needed additionally to support these applications, using the ODP(Open Distributed Processing) modelling concepts, rules and view points as our global design methodology.
During the last half decade, chemically modified graphene (CMG) has been studied in the wide range of applications, such as polymer composites, energy-related materials, sensors, 'paper'-like materials, field-effect transistors (FET), inks, actuators, and biomedical applications due to its excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Chemical modification of graphene oxide, which is generated from graphite oxide, which is produced by simple oxidation of graphite, has been a promising route to achieve mass production of CMG platelets via their colloidal suspensions. Graphene oxide contains a range of reactive oxygen functional groups, which renders it a good candidate for use in the aforementioned applications (among others) through chemical functionalizations. In this presentation, I will discuss my recent research activities on the fundamental chemistry of graphite oxide, as well as novel applications based on CMGs. Topics will include the chemical structure of CMGs and colloidal suspensions of CMG platelets, as well as a wide variety of applications.
Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based sensors are used for various applications owing to advantages such as excellent accuracy and precision, rapid response, and tiny footprint. Traditional applications of QCM-based sensors include biological sensing and thin-film thickness monitoring. Recently, QCMs have been used as functional material for novel physical and chemical detections, and with improved device design. QCM-based sensors are garnering considerable attention in particulate matter sensing and electric nose application. This review covers the challenges and solutions in physical, chemical, and biological sensing applications. First, various physical sensing applications are introduced. Secondly, the toxic gas and chemical detection studies are outlined, focusing on introducing a coating method for uniform sensing film and sensing materials for a minimal damping effect. Lastly, the biological and medical sensing applications, which use the monomolecularly decorating method for biomolecule recognition and a brief description of the overall measuring system, are also discussed.

The flexible solid state device has been widely studied as portable and wearable device applications such as display, sensor and curved circuits. A zero-bias operation without any external power consumption is a highly-demanding feature of semiconductor devices, including optical communication, environment monitoring and digital imaging applications. Moreover, the flexibility of device would give the degree of freedom of transparent electronics. Functional and transparent abrupt p/n junction device has been realized by combining of p-type NiO and n-type ZnO metal oxide semiconductors. The use of a plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film substrate spontaneously allows the flexible feature of the devices. The functional design of p-NiO/n-ZnO metal oxide device provides a high rectifying ratio of 189 to ensure the quality junction quality. This all transparent metal oxide device can be operated without external power supply. The flexible p-NiO/n-ZnO device exhibit substantial photodetection performances of quick response time of $68{\mu}s$. We may suggest an efficient design scheme of flexible and functional metal oxide-based transparent electronics.
We have previously demonstrated a microfluidic elastomer, which changes apparent color and could have potential applications in smart windows. The practical use of such functional microfluidic systems requires rapid and uniform fluid displacement throughout the channel network with minimal amount of liquid supply. The goal of this simulation study is to design various microfluidic networks for similar applications including, but not limited to, the color-switching windows and compare the liquid displacement speed and efficiency of the designs. We numerically simulate and analyze the liquid displacement in the microfluidic networks with serpentine, parallel and lattice channel configurations, as well as their modified versions with wide or tapered distributor and collector channels. The data are analyzed on the basis of numerical criteria defined to evaluate the performance of the corresponding functional systems. We found that the lattice channel network geometry with the tapered distributors and collectors provides most rapid and uniform fluid displacement with minimum liquid waste. The simulation results could give an important guideline for efficient liquid supply/displacement in emerging functional systems with embedded microfluidic networks.
