  • Phytochemicals have long been known to hold a number of physiological benefits, including antioxidant, anticardiovascular activities and anticancer. The profitable effects of phytochemicals from food sources such as vegetables and fruits, with respect to neurodegeneration, are only beginning to receive increased attention. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major neurodegenerative diseases for which no treatment is available, and characterized by loss of cognition and memory. Many recent studies show that the brain of AD patient is subjected to increased oxidative stress resulting from free radical damage, and the resulting cellular malfunctions are widely believed to be responsible for neuronal degeneration in AD. In this study, the relative relation between AD and phytochemicals were surveyed.

  • With the trend of wearing mountaineering wear as casual apparel as well as a continuous increase of mountaineers, mountaineering wear market has rapidly grown. New techniques to improve mountaineering apparel have been developed. Construction Without Sewing(CWS) is one of them. It is a sewing technique to improve performance and functions of new functional mountaineering apparel. CWS employs a welding machine with an adhesive tape and press instead of sewing so that it makes the apparel lighter and have better wearability, durability, and windproof and waterproof function, than sewed apparel. This study focuses on the concept, nature, and applications of the mountaineering wear manufactured by CWS. It also made an analysis of manufacturing process, and proposed three designs for the mountaineering wear created by CWS. With introducing the merits of CWS, the costumers will be have better understanding of CWS and break their stereotype that functional clothing is simply expensive without considering its benefits.

  • Today's food technologist is receiving increasingly pointed directions in the “selection of”and often “minimum amounts of”ingredients to use in the development of new food products. This increasing emphasis by marketing on “label”claims is real and gaining momentum in most market places. Thus, the development of functional foods that are providing customers with new and distinct nutritional choices. The driving force for the increased direction of the food technologist is that many governments are now allowing health related label claims on food products. These health claims are a result of very clearly and focused research that shows known nutritional benefits. The regulatory environment is well focused on the results of this peer reviewed research. In the USA, FDA has allowed several opportunities for health claims including fiber, soy protein and choline. This presentation will focus on only two of many functional ingredient options-the soy proteins and lecithin(choline).

  • Incorporation of bioactive compounds such as vitamins, probiotics, bioactive peptides, and antioxidants into Nutrient Delivery System (NDS) for 'nanofood' provides simple way to develop novel functional foods that may have physiological benefits or reduce risks of diseases. As vital nutrient in nanofood, proteins possess unique functional properties including ability to form gels and emulsions, which allow them to be ideal nanofood materials for encapsulation of bioactive compounds. Based on protein physico-chemical properties, this review describes potential role of nanofood materials for development of NDS in hydrogel form, micro-or nano-particles. Applications of these nanofood materials to protect delivery-sensitive nutraceutical compounds are illustrated, and impacts of particle size on release properties are emphasized.

  • Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy has been investigated to enhance and accelerate the recovery of injured peripheral nerves. Based on the wide range of benefits of PBM therapy and its clinical relevance, this study reviewed the efficacy of PBM in injured facial nerves. The search was performed in the PubMed database to find relevant articles published over the last 10 years. Four animal studies, two randomized controlled studies, one case series, and five case reports were reviewed. Despite the various parameters, functional analysis showed that PBM therapy using near-infrared irradiation has beneficial effects on the recovery of the acute phase of the damaged facial nerve, especially when related to faster functional improvement. There were no reported adverse effects of PBM therapy.

  • Amid global environmental concerns, initiatives to adopt sustainable industrial processes have garnered significant attention in diverse sectors. Efforts have centered on utilizing natural resources as dyeing and functionalizing agents in the textile industry. However, the limited color fastness and functional endurance of natural compounds remains a substantial challenge. This research investigated whether ultrasound could enhance the finishing effect of natural compounds on cotton fabrics. Chestnut shell extract was prepared and applied to cotton fabrics using a pad-dry-cure technique, with concurrent application of ultrasonic power. Once integrated into the fabrics, the chestnut shell extract exhibited prolonged health benefits for users. The findings demonstrated that ultrasound treatment during the finishing process facilitated the diffusion of natural compounds from the chestnut shell extract into the fabric structure, resulting in a substantial enhancement of the finishing effect, notably augmenting the antibacterial properties of the treated cotton fabrics.

  • This study aims to improve the quality of distance learning by developing webcast-based e-learning media and integrating it into an e-learning platform for functional job training purposes at the National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia. This study uses a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to assess and predict user perceptions of information systems using webcast platforms as an alternative to conventional applications. The research method was an online survey using Google Forms. Data collected from 136 respondents involved in practical job training were analyzed using structural equation modeling to test the technology acceptance model. The results showed that the proposed model effectively explained the variables associated with the adoption of web-based e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia for participants engaged in functional job training. These findings suggest that users' perceptions of ease of use, usefulness, benefits, attitudes, intentions, and webcast usage significantly contribute to the acceptance and use of a more effective and efficient webcast-based e-learning platform.

  • The drying of duck blood provides safety and commercial benefits, but each drying method has its own characteristics. Moreover, information on the effects of diverse drying methods on the quality of duck blood is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various drying methods on the chemical and functional properties of duck blood. The physicochemical characteristics and functional properties of duck blood subjected to spray drying (SD), freeze drying (FD), vacuum drying (VD), and hot air drying (HD) were examined. The carbonyl content of FD duck blood powder was the lowest and the thermal stability was higher than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). The gel obtained from spray-dried blood displayed the lowest malondialdehyde content. The hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were the highest in the heat-induced gel prepared from FD duck blood powder (p<0.05). The gel obtained from FD duck blood displayed a denser structure than the other gel samples. Taken together, the FD duck blood exhibited excellent chemical properties and processing suitability.

  • The growing demand for functional cosmetics, driven by modern individuals' quest for healthy and aesthetically pleasing skin, is being challenged by reports of side effects and toxicity associated with these products. This underscores the importance of exploring natural plant-based materials for functional cosmetics. This research focuses on the assessment of antioxidant and whitening properties of mixed extracts from Ipomoea nil, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, and Angelica gigas Nakai, all of which have proven pharmacological benefits. The study evaluated the extracts' total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, SOD-like activity, and xanthine oxidase inhibition to determine their antioxidant capabilities. Moreover, the whitening potential was investigated through tyrosinase activity and melanin production assays, alongside a cytotoxicity evaluation via a cell viability test. The findings revealed that the extracts, IAA-1 to IAA-4, demonstrated both antioxidative and whitening capabilities without exhibiting cytotoxic effects. Notably, the extract IAA-4, processed through ultrasonic and ultrahigh pressure extraction, exhibited superior effectiveness. These results indicate that the cavitation formed during ultrasonic irradiation effectively destroys the plant cell wall by creating high pressure, and as a result, it is judged that useful components are easily extracted. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the IAA-4 extract could be applied as a material for functional cosmetics.
