In this study, a transfemoral prosthesis system of which both stance phase and swing phase are controllable has been developed for the recovery of the biomechanical function of the amputated leg. It consists of a 5 bar link mechanism, a hydraulic-rubber knee damper for stance phase control and a pneumatic cylinder controlled via a microprocessor for stance phase control. The mechanical characteristics of the knee damper which absorbs the impact energy generated at the heel contact were investigated. The characteristics of the pneumatic cylinder essential for the speed adaptation of the prosthesis during swing phase were also studied for its mechanical characteristics. The prosthesis was subject to the clinical tests, and the gait characteristics obtained were very close to those of normal subjects. The stance and swing controlled prosthesis that were developed in this study showed good stability during the stance phase and showed good controllability during the swing phase.
In this paper the BER consideration of a quadrature receiver that has an autocalibration method is considered. The analysis is based on the derivation of the statistical characteristics of the imbalances in gain and phase between in-phase and quadrature components that may cause severe performance degradation of the receiver. The density. mean and variance functions of the estimates of gain and phase imbalances are discussed. Then it is shown that the estimates are asymptotically minimum variance unbiased with respect to the integration time in sampling. A brief consideration on the BER calculation follows.
This work presents a stability analysis of the synchronous state for one-way master-slave time distribution networks with single star topology. Using bifurcation theory, the dynamical behavior of second-order phase-locked loops employed to extract the synchronous state in each node is analyzed in function of the constitutive parameters. Two usual inputs, the step and the ramp phase perturbations, are supposed to appear in the master node and, in each case, the existence and the stability of the synchronous state are studied. For parameter combinations resulting in non-hyperbolic synchronous states the linear approximation does not provide any information, even about the local behavior of the system. In this case, the center manifold theorem permits the construction of an equivalent vector field representing the asymptotic behavior of the original system in a local neighborhood of these points. Thus, the local stability can be determined.
Discharge analysis technique for dielectric liquid was presented by using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) under a lightning impulse incorporating two-phase flow phenomena which described gas and liquid phases in discharge space. Until now, the response of step voltage has been extensively explored, but that of lightning impulse voltage was rarely viewed in the literature. We, therefore, developed an analyzing technique for dielectric liquid in a tip-sphere electrode stressed by a high electric field. To capture the bubble phase, the Heaviside function was introduced mathematically and the material functions for the ionization, dissociation, recombination, and attachment were defined in liquid and bubble, respectively. By using this numerical setup, the molecular dissociation and ionization mechanisms were tested under low and high electric fields resulted from the lightning impulse voltage of 1.2/50 ${\mu}s$. To verify our numerical results, the velocity of electric field wave was measured and compared to the previous experimental results which can be viewed in many papers. Those results had good agreement with each other.
In this paper, a transfer function was obtained for a PWM high speed solenoid valve controlled metal belt CVT system. The transfer function was defined as the ratio of speed ratio to PWM duty ratio and derived in time domain by linear regression analysis from the experimental results. The transfer function obtained showed different dynamic characteristics for the up and down shift. Also, LQG/LTR controller was designed for the CVT system using the transfer function. It is seen from the experimental results that LQG/LTR control showed good performance for the speed ratio tracking and disturbance rejection. The phase difference and relatively slow response are considered due to the inaccuracy os the transfer functions, which resulted from the inherent nonlinearities of the transmission characteristics of the metal belt CVT.
A thermal-hydraulic code, named CUPID, has been developed for the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components. A two-fluid three-field model was used for steam-water two-phase flows. To obtain numerical solutions, the finite volume method was applied over unstructured cell-centered meshes. In steam-water two-phase flows, a phase change, i.e., evaporation or condensation, results in a great change in the flow field because of substantial density difference between liquid and vapor phases. Thus, two-phase flows are very sensitive to the local pressure distribution that determines the phase change. This in turn puts emphasis on the accurate evaluation of local pressure gradient. This paper presents a new reconstruction method to evaluate the pressure gradient at cell centers on unstructured meshes. The results of the new scheme for a simple test function, a gravity-driven cavity, and a wall boiling two-phase flow are compared with those of the previous schemes in the CUPID code.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the adjustment process of middle-aged people in Korea with hemiplegia after a stroke. Method: For this study, the grounded theory method was utilized. Results: After constant comparative analysis, the core category emerged as 'rebuilding the body which was ruined'. In addition, the causal conditions were 'restriction of physical function', and 'loss of roles'. The adjustment process consisted of the 'facing reality phase', 'overcoming depression phase', 'overcoming physical limits phase' and 'reestablishing roles phase' The main strategies in the facing reality phase were 'holding on to a glimmer of hope', 'getting away from the harsh reality' and 'facing up to the reality'. The main strategies in the overcoming depression phase were 'soothing oneself', 'Self-introspection' and 'restoring self-esteem'. In addition, the main strategies in the self-initiative overcoming physical limits phase was 'discovering personal strategies and striving to recover'. The main strategies in the reestablishing roles phase were 'reestablishing a parents' role', 'reestablishing a spouse's role' and 'reestablishing social roles'. Conclusion: In conclusion, even though many middle aged stroke patients remained in the depression phase, most of them who overcame depression strived to conquer physical limits on their own initiative.
