  • Since the columns with flexure-shear failure have lower ductility than those with flexural failure, shear capacity curve models shall be applied as well as flexural capacity curve in order to determine ultimate displacement for seismic design or performance evaluation. In this paper, a proposed modified shear capacity curve model is compared with the other models such as the CALTRANS model, Aschheim et al.'s model, and Priestley et al.'s model. Four shear capacity curve models are applied to the 4 full scale and 7 small scale circular bridge column test results and the accuracy of each model is discussed. It may not be fully adequate to drive a final decision from the application to the limited number of test results, however the proposed model provides the better prediction of failure mode and ultimate displacement than the other models for the selected column test results.

  • There occurred a moderate size earthquake of M=5 at Whagae-Myun Hadong-Gun Kyongsangnam-Do of Korea, It caused severe damage to the buildings and other structures is Sang-Gye-Sa a famous and beautiful Buddhist Temple, The 5-story stone pagoda was standing in front of Keumdang. The top component tipped over and fell to the ground during the earthquake. In order to have accurate and quantitative estimate of the intensity of earthquake a full-scale replica is made through rigorous verification process, The completed model was mounted on the shaking table and subjected to th seismic tests. It was observed that the top component overturned at 0.16 G of EPGA when the NS component of the 1940 el Centro earthquake records was used as the input motion. A brief history of this project is presented and important test results are report6ed and their implication is discussed.

  • The objective of the study is to evaluate the feasibility of the dynamic behavior of slope through both 1 g shaking table test and numerical analysis. Accelerometers were installed in the slope model with different types of seismic waves. The numerical analysis (ABAQUS and DEEPSOIL) was used to simulate 1 g shaking table test at infinite boundary. Similar Acceleration-time history, Spectral acceleration (SA) and Spectral acceleration amplification factor (Fa) were obtained, which verified the feasibility of modeling using ABAQUS and DEEPSOIL under the same size. The influence of the size (1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 times larger than that used in the 1 g shaking table test) of the model used in the numerical analysis were extensively investigated. According to the similitude law, ABAQUS was used to analyze the dynamic behavior of large-scale slope model. The 5% Damping Spectral acceleration (SA) and Spectral acceleration amplification factor (Fa) at the same proportional positions were compared. Based on the comparison of numerical analyses and 1 g shaking table tests, it was found that the 1 g shaking table test result can be utilized to predict the dynamic behavior of the real scale slope through numerical analysis.

  • From the analysis results of some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea, many bridge piers are expected to show complex shear-flexural behaviour under earthquakes. But the previous research works about the seismic evaluation of bridges considered flexural behaviour RC piers only. In addition, the past bridge design specifications in Korea didn't include limitation on the amount of longitudinal lap splices in the plastic hinge zone of piers. Thus a large majority of non-seismically designed bridge piers in Korea may have lap splices in plastic hinge zone. In this study, prototype pier was selected among existent bridge piers whose failure mode is expected to be complex shear-flexural mode. And then, full scale and 1/2 reduced scale model RC piers with various longitudinal lap splice details were constructed. From the quasi static test results on these model RC piers, the effect of longitudinal lap splices on the seismic performance of bridges piers was analyzed. And the seismic capacity of the non-seismically designed shear-flexural RC piers was evaluated.

  • Precast assembled bridge piers with hybrid connection (PASP) use both tendons and socket connections. To study the seismic performance of PASP, a full-scale in-situ test was performed based on an actual bridge project. The elastic-plastic fiber model of PASP was established using finite element software, and numerical analyses were performed to study the influence of prestress degree and socket depth on the PASP seismic performance. The results show that the typical failure mode of PASP under horizontal load is bending failure dominated by concrete cracking at the joint between the column and cushion cap. The cracking of the pier concrete and opening of joints depend on the prestress degree and socket depth. The prestressing tendons and socket connection can provide enough ductility, strength, restoration capability, and bending strength under small horizontal displacements. Although the bearing capacity and post yield stiffness of the pier can be improved to some extent by increasing the prestressing force, ductility is reduced, and residual deformation is increased. Overall, there are reasonable minimum socket depths to ensure the reliability of the socket connection.

  • MR dampers have been proposed for the control of cable vibration of cable-stayed bridge in recent years due to their high performance and low energy consumption. However, the highly nonlinear feature of MR dampers makes them difficult to be designed with efficient semi-active control algorithms. Simulation study has previously been carried out on the cable-MR damper system using a semi-active control algorithm derived based on the universal design curve of dampers and a bilinear mechanical model of the MR damper. This paper aims to verify the effectiveness of the MR damper for mitigating cable vibration through a full-scale experimental test, using the same semi-active control strategy as in the simulation study. A long stay cable fabricated for a real bridge was set-up with the MR damper installed. The cable was excited under both free and forced vibrations. Different test scenarios were considered where the MR damper was tuned as passive damper with minimum or maximum input current, or the input current of the damper was changed according to the proposed semi-active control algorithm. The effectiveness of the MR damper for controlling the cable vibration was assessed through computing the damping ratio of the cable for free vibration and the root mean square value of acceleration of the cable for forced vibration.

  • The in-situ pushover test differs from the shake-table test because it is performed outdoors and thus its size is not restricted by space, which allows us to test a full-size building. However, to build a new full-size building for the test is not economical, consequently scholars around the world usually make scale structures or full-scale component units to be tested in the laboratory. However, if in-situ pushover tests can be performed on full-size structures, then the seismic behaviors of buildings during earthquakes can be grasped. In view of this, this study conducts two in-situ pushover tests of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. One is a masonry-infilled RC building with openings (the openings ratio of masonry infill wall is between 24% and 51%) and the other is an RC building without masonry infill. These two in-situ pushover tests adopt obsolescent RC buildings, which will be demolished, to conduct experiment and successfully obtain seismic capacity curves of the buildings. The test results are available for the development or verification of a seismic evaluation model. This paper uses ASCE 41-17 as the main evaluation model and is accompanied by a simplified pushover analysis, which can predict the seismic capacity curves of low-rise buildings in Taiwan. The predicted maximum base shear values for masonry-infilled RC buildings with openings and for RC buildings without masonry infill are, respectively, 69.69% and 87.33% of the test values. The predicted initial stiffness values are 41.04% and 100.49% of the test values, respectively. It can be seen that the ASCE 41-17 evaluation model is reasonable for the RC building without masonry infill walls. In contrast, the analysis result for the masonry infilled RC building with openings is more conservative than the test value because the ASCE 41-17 evaluation model is limited to masonry infill walls with an openings ratio not exceeding 40%. This study suggests using ASCE 41-17's unreinforced masonry wall evaluation model to simulate a masonry infill wall with an openings ratio greater than 40%. After correction, the predicted maximum base shear values of the masonry infilled RC building with openings is 82.60% of the test values and the predicted initial stiffness value is 67.13% of the test value. Therefore, the proposed method in this study can predict the seismic behavior of a masonry infilled RC frame with large openings.

  • It is necessary to predict hydrodynamic derivatives when assessing the maneuverability of a submarine. The force and moment acting on the vehicle may affect its motion in various modes. Conventionally, the derivatives are determined by performing captive model tests in a towing tank or applying a system identification method to the free running model test. However, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has also become a possible tool to predict the hydrodynamics. In this study, virtual captive model tests for a full-scale submarine were conducted by utilizing a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver in ANSYS FLUENT version 18.2. The simulations were carried out at design speed for various modes of motion such as straight forward, drift, angle of attack, deflection of the rudder, circular, and combined motion. The hydrodynamic force and moment acting on the submarine appended rudders and stern stabilizers were then obtained. Finally, hydrodynamic derivatives were determined, and these could be used for evaluating the maneuvering characteristics of the submarine in a further study.

  • The hydrodynamic effects on resistance and propulsive performance were studied by using the data from model test and full scale speed trials. A series of model tests on 3 geosims for a 60,000 DWT Bulk Carrier was conducted at KIMM's Ship Experimental Towing Tank and the results analyzed by 1978 ITTC Performance Prediction Method show the correlation between 3 geosim models. Also powering data of full scale speed trials were analyzed by the newly developed computer program and the correlation analysis between ship and model was studied.
