Cored moment resisting stub column (CMSC) was previously developed by the features of adopting a core segment which remains mostly elastic and reduced column section (RCS) details around the ends to from a stable hysteretic behavior with large post-yield stiffness and considerable ductility. Several full-scale CMSC components with various length proportions of the RCSs with respect to overall lengths have been experimentally investigated through both far-field and near-fault cyclic loadings followed by fatigue tests. Test results verified that the proposed CMSC provided very ductile hysteretic responses with no strength degradation even beyond the occurrence of the local buckling at the side-segments. The effect of RCS lengths on the seismic performance of the CMSC was verified to relate with the levels of the deformation concentration at the member ends, the local buckling behavior and overall ductility. Estimation equations were established to notionally calculate the first-yield and ultimate strengths of the CMSC and validated by the measured responses. A numerical model of the CMSC was developed to accurately capture the hysteretic performance of the specimens, and was adopted to clarify the effect of the surrounding frame and to perform a parametric study to develop the estimation of the elastic stiffness.
The dynamic stability of railway vehicle has been one of the important issues in railway safety. The dynamic simulator has been used in the study about the dynamic stability of railway vehicle and wheel/rail interface optimization. Especially, a small scale simulator has been widely used in the fundamental study in the laboratory instead of full scale roller rig which is not cost effective and inconvenient to achieve diverse design parameters. But the technique for the design of the small scale simulator about the dynamic characteristics of the wheel-rail system and the bogie system has not been well developed in Korea. Therefore, the research using the small-scaled derailment simulator and the 1/5 scaled bogie has been conducted. In this paper, we did running stability test of 1/5 scaled bogie using small-scaled derailment simulator. Also, for the operation of the small scaled simulator, it is required to investigate the performance and characteristics of the simulator system. This could be achieved by a comparative study between an analysis and an experiment. This paper presented the analytical model which could be used for verifying the test results and understanding of the physical behavior of the dynamic system comprising the small- scaled derailment simulator and the 1/5 scaled bogie.

The real-time hybrid testing method(RT-HYTEM) is a structural testing technique in which the numerical integration of the equation of motion for a numerical substructure and the physical testing for an experimental substructure are performed simultaneously in real-time. This study presents the quantitative evaluation of the seismic performance of a building structure installed with an passive and semi-active MR damper by using RT-HYTEM. The building model that was identified from the force-vibration testing results of a real-scaled 5-story building is used as the numerical substructure, and an MR damper corresponding to an experimental substructure is physically tested by using the universal testing machine(UTM). The RT-HYTEM implemented in this study is validated because the real-time hybrid testing results obtained by application of sinusoidal and earthquake excitations and the corresponding analytical results obtained by using the Bouc-Wen model as the control force of the MR damper respect to input currents were in good agreement. Also for preliminary study, some semi-active control algorithms were applied to the MR damper in order to control the structural responses optimally. Comparing between the test results of semi-active control using RT-HYTEM and numerical analysis results show that the RT-HYTEM is more resonable than numerical analysis to evaluate the performance of semi-active control algorithms.
This paper presents some of the results from an experimental research project on the behavior of extended end-plate connections subjected to moment conducted at the Structural Laboratory of Jordan University of Science and Technology. Since the connection behavior affects the structural frame response, it must be included in the global analysis and design. In this study, the behavior of six full-scale stiffened and unstiffened cantilever connections of HEA- and IPE-sections has been investigated. Eight high strength bolts were used to connect the extended end-plate to the column flange in each case. Strain gauges were installed inside each of the top six bolts in order to obtain experimentally the actual tension force induced within each bolt. Then the connection behavior is characterized by the tension force in the bolt, extended end-plate behavior, moment-rotation relation, and beam and column strains. Some or all of these characteristics are used by many Standards; therefore, it is essential to predict the global behavior of column-beam connections by their geometrical and mechanical properties. The experimental test results are compared with two theoretical (equal distribution and linear distribution) approaches in order to assess the capabilities and accuracy of the theoretical models. A simple model of the joint is established and the essential parameters to predict its strength and deformational behavior are determined. The equal distribution method reasonably determined the tension forces in the upper two bolts while the linear distribution method underestimated them. The deformation behavior of the tested connections was characterized by separation of the column-flange from the extended end-plate almost down to the level of the upper two bolts of the lower group and below this level the two parts remained in full contact. The neutral axis of the deformed joint is reasonably assumed to pass very close to the line joining the upper two bolts of the lower group. Smooth monotonic moment-rotation relations for the all tested frames were observed.

Reinforced and prestressed concrete (RC and PC) thin walls are crucial to the safety and serviceability of structures subjected to shear. The shear strengths of elements in walls depend strongly on the softening of concrete struts in the principal compression direction due to the principal tension in the perpendicular direction. The past three decades have seen a rapid development of knowledge in shear of reinforced concrete structures. Various rational models have been proposed that are based on the smeared-crack concept and can satisfy Navier's three principles of mechanics of materials (i.e., stress equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive laws). The Cyclic Softened Membrane Model (CSMM) is one such rational model developed at the University of Houston, which is being efficiently used to predict the behavior of RC/PC structures critical in shear. CSMM for RC has already been implemented into finite element framework of OpenSees (Fenves 2005) to come up with a finite element program called Simulation of Reinforced Concrete Structures (SRCS) (Zhong 2005, Mo et al. 2008). CSMM for PC is being currently implemented into SRCS to make the program applicable to reinforced as well as prestressed concrete. The generalized program is called Simulation of Concrete Structures (SCS). In this paper, the CSMM for RC/PC in material scale is first introduced. Basically, the constitutive relationships of the materials, including uniaxial constitutive relationship of concrete, uniaxial constitutive relationships of reinforcements embedded in concrete and constitutive relationship of concrete in shear, are determined by testing RC/PC full-scale panels in a Universal Panel Tester available at the University of Houston. The formulation in element scale is then derived, including equilibrium and compatibility equations, relationship between biaxial strains and uniaxial strains, material stiffness matrix and RC plane stress element. Finally the formulated results with RC/PC plane stress elements are implemented in structure scale into a finite element program based on the framework of OpenSees to predict the structural behavior of RC/PC thin-walled structures subjected to earthquake-type loading. The accuracy of the multiscale modeling technique is validated by comparing the simulated responses of RC shear walls subjected to reversed cyclic loading and shake table excitations with test data. The response of a post tensioned precast column under reversed cyclic loads has also been simulated to check the accuracy of SCS which is currently under development. This multiscale modeling technique greatly improves the simulation capability of RC thin-walled structures available to researchers and engineers.

Shipbuilders carry out the operation test to check the conditions of the main propulsion system and auxiliaries for moored vessel in the quoy before the sea trial. The estimation of the thrust and torque for the partially submerged propeller should be prepared to ensure the safety of mooring line and the ship. In this paper, the variations of the thrust and torque according to the shaft submergence and the propeller rotating speed in bollard pull condition are investigated with the model test and the numerical analysis. Based on these resaearch, the empirical formula representing the physical phenomena of the partially submerged propeller is derived and validated through comparison to measurement results of full-scale propellers under the quoy operation test.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the static & dynamic behavior of a precast bracket under precast road deck slab of double deck tunnel. In order to improve the construction speed, the field prefabricated bracket to connect the intermediate slab to the precast shield tunnel lining structure has been developed in the 'SPC (Steel Precast Concrete) bracket'. The experiments were performed for the full scale model in order to evaluate the performance of the 'SPC bracket', the structural stability was verified through the FEM analysis. The result of static loading test, no deformations or cracks of the bracket undergo the ultimate load was investigated. In addition, no pulling or deformation of the chemical anchor for fixing the bracket was measured. As a result of dynamic loading test, it was investigated that there is no problem in the chemical anchor for fixing the bracket. FEM analysis showed similar behavior to static load test and it was determined that there is no problem in serviceability and structural safety.
Most of the soil used for reclamation is marine clay generated from dredging construction. The soft ground made of dredged clay has high water content and high compressibility, so the bearing capacity of the ground is very weak and it is difficult to enter the ground improvement equipment. Therefore, surface hardening treatment method is used to enter equipment prior to full-scale civil engineering work, and stabilizer is mainly used for cement series. Cement-based stabilizers have the advantage of improving the ground in a short period of time and have excellent economic efficiency, but they are disadvantageous in that they cause environmental problems due to leaching of heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium. In this study, environmental effects evaluation of dredged clay mixed with normal portland cement and environmentally friendly stabilizer was evaluated, and uniaxial compressive strength test and indoor model test were conducted to confirm the bearing capacity characteristics of the solidified layer.
When the vertical load-bearing members in high-rise structures fail locally, the beam-column joints play an important role in the redistribution of the internal forces. In this paper, a static laboratory test of three full-scale flush flange beam-reinforced connections with side and cover plates (CP-FBSP connection) with double half-span steel beams and single L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) was conducted. The influence of the side plate width and cover plate thickness on the progressive collapse resistance of the substructure was thoroughly analyzed. The failure mode, vertical force-displacement curves, strain variation, reaction force of the pin support and development of internal force in the section with the assumed plastic hinge were discussed. Then, through the verified finite element model, the corresponding analyses of the thickness and length of the side plates, the connecting length between the steel beam flange and cover plate, and the vertical-force eccentricity were carried out. The results show that the failure of all the specimens occurred through the cracking of the beam flange or the cover plate, and the beam chord rotations measured by the test were all greater than 0.085 rad. Increasing the length, thickness and width of the side plates slightly reduced the progressive collapse resistance of the substructures. The vertical-force eccentricity along the beam length reduced the progressive collapse resistance of the substructure. An increase in the connecting length between the beam flange and cover plate can significantly improve the progressive collapse resistance of substructures.
This study analyzed efficiency by utilizing DEA analytical technique centering on materials for 2009 of 20 major university hospitals in capital area. Input variables were utilized professor & full-time doctor, resident, nurse & number of bed hospitals. Output variables were analyzed by dividing number of annual outpatients & number of annual inpatients, and annually total outpatient profit & inpatient profit into a model of the standard for number of patients and the standard for medical profit. DEA analysis was elicited efficiency score by applying CCR, BCC, BFG, scale profit, and SE model. Through t-test after eliciting efficiency score, the implications were suggested by comparing efficiency between DMU in Seoul and DMU in capital area, by comparing between high-class general hospitals and general hospitals, and by comparing between high-class general hospitals in Seoul and 5 big hospitals. As a result of analysis, the major university hospitals in capital area showed high efficiency as a whole close to "1," but indicated low efficiency relatively in CCR field. Thus, the expansion in scale within capital area was indicated to reach the limit. Second, in a model of analyzing the standard for number of patients, the medical institutions, which are being operated efficiently, were indicated to be 10 DMUs. In the standard for medical profit, 12 DMUs were analyzed to be operated efficiently. Third, the efficiency in general hospital was higher than high-class general hospital. Thus, the efficiency of operation was indicated to be more important than scale. Also, large high-class hospitals(big 5) where are located in downtown Seoul showed the higher efficiency than other general high-class general hospitals, but were indicating very low efficiency in some DMUs. Fourth, as a result of generalizing and evaluating the number of patients and the medical profit, the efficient DMU was indicated to be more when analyzing on the basis of medical profit than the standard for number of patients. Thus, major university hospitals in capital area were indicated to make more effort for section in medical profit. Based on the analytical results of efficiency, a strategy for reinforcing efficiency in inefficient DMU was indicated to be needed a strategy of creating customers for promoting number of patients and a strategy for making operation efficient for increasing profitability.
