  • Biodiesel is gaining more attractive due to its eco-friendly and the fact that it is prepared from renewable sources. It is monoalkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils and animal fats via transesterification reaction with alcohol in the presence of catalyst. This paper will review briefly (1) the effect of reaction conditions such as catalyst type, amount of free fatty acid and moisture, molar ratio of alcohol and oil, alcohol type, reaction temperature and time and stirring intesity, (2) downstream process of biodiesel after transesterification reaction, and (3) potentialities of biodiesel as an alternative fuel based on its properties in diesel engines.

  • Limited and nonlimited emissions of scooters were analysed during several annual research programs of the Swiss Agency of Environment Forests and Landscape(SAEFL, BUWAL). Small scooters, which are very much used in the congested centers of several cities are a remarkable source of air pollution. Therefore every effort to reduce the emissions is an important contribution to improve the air quality in urban centers. In the present work detailed investigations of particle emissions of different 2-stroke scooters with direct injection and with carburetor were performed. The nanoparticulate emissions with different lube oils and fuels were measured by means of SMPS, (CPC) and NanoMet. Also the particle mass emission(PM) was measured with the same method as for Diesel engines. It can be stated, that the oil and fuel quality have a considerable influence on the particle emissions, which are mainly oil condensates. The engine technology influences the (nano)particle emissions by: mixture preparation, mixture tuning, oil consumption, postoxidation, quality, condition and temperature of the catalyst. Since the particulate emission of the 2-S consists mainly of lube oil condensates the minimization of oil consumption stays always an important goal.

  • In this study, the characteristics of air pollutant emissions from ships' engines have been investigated by conducting E2 and E3 cycle mode tests. A engine 360Ps (Doosan L126TIH engine) and 400kW dynamometer Horiba-Schenck were utilized for engine tests. The FTIR analyzer and SPC were used to measure exhaust gas (NOx, SOx etc.) and PM (particulate matter), respectively. The results showed that the emissions of THC and CO produced from engine were increased with the increase of sulfur content in fuel oils at E2 and E3 cycle modes. The kinetic viscosity of the fuel increased as the sulfur content of the fuel increased, thereby the specific fuel oil consumption (SFC) of the engine improved. This result is considered to be due to improved combustion conditions due to increased average diameters of sprayed particles and due to increased kinetic viscosity under constant fuel injection pressure in this study. In the case of NOx emission, this study showed no significant change in amount of sulfur content.

  • This study was initiated in order to find alternative fuel substituting for light oil the most common fuel for heating greenhouse. The tire oil used in this research was produced by pyrolysis process, one of the final products besides steel string and carbon black in which waste tires as a form of chopped pieces broken by shredding machine are heated up to 200~30$0^{\circ}C$ with maximum restraining of oxygen supply. In order to justify light oil equivalent qualities in tire oil combustion characteristics were defined in the way of comparing kinetic viscosities in the wide range of temperature flame sizes and exhaust gas components in the various combustion conditions. We found that kinetic viscosity of tire oil was lower than light oil by 1 to 2 cSt in the temperature range showing better flowing mobility in the fuel line of the burner and no significant difference in flame size between the two oils in the all combustion treatments. However much more NO and SO$_2$ were detected from the exhaust gases of tire oil than light oil combustions. In fact tire oil contains more nitrogen and total sulfur, by 25 times and 40 times respectively than light oil according to the composition analysis. Tolerable limit for SO$_2$discharge amount defined by the national air pollution standards is under 540ppm so tire oil combustion satisfies the requirement though. It is desirable if sulfur and nitrogen filtering process shall be added in the tire oil production line. Except the exhaust gas components all greenhouse heating qualities of tire oil including hot air temperature are very identical to those of light oil.

  • The paper provides a review on bio-oil production technology from biomass by using fast pyrolysis to use heating fuel, power fuel and transport fuel. One of the most promising methods for a small scale conversion of biomass into liquid fuels is fast pyrolysis. In fast pyrolysis, bio-oil is produced by rapidly heating biomass to intermediate temperature ($450{\sim}600^{\circ}C$) in the absence of any external oxygen followed by rapid quenching of the resulting vapor. Bio-oil can be produced in weight yield maximum 75 wt% of the original dry biomass and bio-oils typically contain 60-75% of the initial energy of the biomass. In this study, it is described focusing on the characterization of feedstock, production principle of bio-oil, bio-oil's property and it's application sector.

  • Hazard of Biodiesel (BDF) was studied. Biodiesel is a name for a variety of ester-based fuel made from vegetable oils. Recently importance of biodiesel is increasing, and its fires were sometimes reported. Therefore we studied on hazard of biodiesel comparing (petroleum) diesel oil and vegetable oil, raw materials of biodiesel. We found that biodiesel is auto-oxidized easily and ignites, and its flash point decreases when even small amount of methanol exists. And there are various raw materials to manufacture biodiesel, so we studied the difference of these materials, and their aging on safety.

  • New method and device for the on-line measurement of soot concentration in a diesel engine oil are proposed, where the measurement principle is based mainly on attenuated internal total reflection. The detector were evaluated in various ranges of contaminated oils by carbon black particles. It was found that the proposed detector could be well used to monitor the oil deterioration due to soot contamination. Operational range of the detector was found from 0 to 5 mass percentage of soot content. Test results with water and fuel dilution showed that these effects were not remarkable. However, adsorption of carbon black particles onto the measurement surface was considered to be a critical problem of the detector. Effects of particle deposition on the interface was experimentally evaluated with the oil temperature and flow turbulence and discussed throughout this work.

  • Use of high-quality basestocks is increasing to produce high-performance lubricants. However, their tribological characteristics have not been understood clearly yet. In this study, a newly developed basestock from a fuel hydrocracker and a poly-alpha-olefin are selected and investigated on the properties of lubricants formulated with them. The Lubricants are prepared by blending the basestocks with typical additives such as a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, a dispersant, a detergent and a dispersant-inhibitor package. Frictional and wear-preventing properties are investigated using an oscillating-type wear-testing machine. The contact is a ball-on-disk mode and the testing temperature is varied from room temperature to 200$^{\circ}$C. The results show that their frictional property is varied significantly and that the non-conventional oils result in lower friction and lower wear compared with conventional lubricants, especially at the higher temperatures.

  • Biodiesel is manufactured from vegetable oils, etc. in reaction with methanol so that the product of biodiesel may be dangerous due to the methanol remained of it. The risks of methanol remained in biodiesel were studied by measuring flash points and dynamic viscosity to some samples of biodiesel by adding methanol to a certain percentage of. The results of flash points of biodiesel are decreased in accordance with increasing of methanol in biodiesel and also decreasing the dynamic viscosity. It was shown that the risks of explosion of biodiesel are significantly high due to lower flash points resulted from methanol remained in biodiesel fuel as a reactant or adding to biodiesel for reduction of viscosity.
