Dependence of Nanoparticle and Combustion Characteristics of Gasoline Direct Injection Engines on Coolant Temperature (GDI 엔진의 냉각수온에 따른 연소성능 및 입자상 물질 배출 특성)

  • This paper investigated the combustion and exhaust gas characteristics of gasoline direct injection engines for various cooling water temperature. The engine-out nanoparticle emission number and size distribution were measured by a DMS-500 equipped upstream of the catalyst. A CLD-400 and an HFR-400 were equipped at the exhaust port to analyze the cyclic NOx and total hydrocarbon emission characteristics. The results showed that the nanoparticle emission number greatly increased at low coolant temperatures and that the exhaust mainly contained particulate matter of 5.10 nm. THC also increased under low temperature conditions because of fuel film on the combustion chamber. NOx emissions decreased under high temperature conditions because of the increase in internal exhaust gas recirculation. In conclusion, an engine management system control strategy for driving coolant temperature up rapidly is needed to reduce not only THC and NOx but also nanoparticle emissions.

  • One of the most important subjects to develop a LPDi engine is to suppress the bubble generated inside the liquid LPG direct injector. For the purpose of this, the analogy visualization injector to visualize the generation and behaviors of bubble is manufactured, and the bubbling phenomenon and behaviors of bubble are visualized and investigated according to the change of the temperature around an injector wall, fuel pressure and a needle configuration. As results, it was found that the bubble inside the injector is generated around an injector hole and after rising by buoyancy it disappears around the top of a nozzle. The number of bubbles generated is little changed regardless of the lapse of time but it remarkably increases as the temperature around the injector increases. Also, it was known that as the sac volume in LPDi injector decreases the generation of bubble is more active and the rising velocity of bubble generated is increased.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a new oil combustion technology concerning industrial furnaces and kilns, not only to save energy but also to reduce environmental emissions. Of many kinds of such technologies we chose the high temperature air combustion technology which was initiated by the British steel company in '80s and developed further by the American burner company "North American". In this study it was carried out to test regenerative burner experimentally and to have an applicability to industry. From the variation of configuration of gas nozzle and hot test on the temperature distribution and NOx, it was found out that the reduction of NOx was due to the effect of internal gas recirculation, which will be caused by air emitting velocity from burner nozzle.

  • The performance of a direct-injection type diesel engine often depends on the strength of air flow in the cylinder, shape of combustion chamber, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is of course because the process of combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. In the present paper, high speed photography was employed to investigate the effectiveness of holes penetrated from the bottom of cavity wall to piston crown for some more useful utilization of air. The holes would function to improve mixing of fuel and air by the increase of air flow in the cylinder. The results obtained are summarized as follows, (1) Activated first of the combustion by shorten of ignition timing and rapid flame propagation (2) Raised the combustion peak pressure, more close to TDC the formation timing of peak pressure.

  • This study was conducted on the properties of exhaust emissions of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils using a direct injection diesel engine at different loads, and on the conditions of carbon deposits of diesel oil and 40% blend oil in the combustion chamber after 20 hours operation at $\frac{1]{2}$ load. The properties of exhaust emissions by fish oil blended with diesel oils showed no significant difference with diesel oil. However, soot emissions decreased, increasing the ratio of fish oil. Carbon deposits by fish oil blended with diesel oils were high level compared with diesel oil, which might be overcome by preheating of fuel oil and operating conditions.

  • The objective of this study is to establish geometric guidelines for design of impaction parts prepared for removing undesirable effects of fuel deposition on a wall in small direct-injection diesel engines. In order to get the guidelines a new wall geometry is introduced and assessed, which has a flat top and a slant edge. The size of the flat top and the angle of the slant edge are varied and tested in same chamber condition, then their effects on spray dispersions and drop sizes are discussed. The results show that the case of 3.0mm flat top and $60^{\circ}$ edge angle gives the best spray characteristics for a small combustion chamber in the test conditions chosen in this paper.

  • Regenerative burner is a product of new combustion technology for realizing higher thermal efficiency and lower emissions, moreover utilizing very high preheated air temperature up to $1,000^{\circ}C$. In this study the experimental study was carried out to find out a combustion characteristics breaking the old combustion concept. From the variation of configuration of gas nozzle and hot test on the temperature distribution and NOx, CO, it was found out that the performance of regenerative burner was better than that of existing burner, mainly due to the effect of internal gas recirculation.

  • It's well known that with the increase of preheated air temperature NOx is increasing ,while the energy consumption is decreasing. In this study the experimental study was carried out to find out a new method breaking the above-mentioned old concept.   • Anaerobic digestion(AD) has successfully been used for many applications that have conclusively demonstrated its ability to recycle biogenic wastes. AD has been successfully applied in industrial waste water treatment, stabilsation of sewage sludge, landfill management and recycling of biowaste and agricultural wastes as manure, energy crops. During AD, i.e. organic materials are decomposed by anaerobic forming bacteria and fina1ly converted to excellent fertilizer and biogas which is primarily composed of methane(CH4) and carbon dioxide(CO2) with smaller amounts of hydrogen sulfide(H2S) and ammonia(NH3), trace gases such as hydrogen(H2), nitrogen(N2), carbon monoxide(CO), oxygen(O2) and contain dust particles and siloxanes. The production and utilisation of biogas has several environmental advantages such as i)a renewable energy source, ii)reduction the release of methane to the atomsphere, iii)use as a substitute for fossil fuels. In utilisation of biogas, most of biogas produced from small scale plant e.g. farm-scale AD plant are used to provide as energy source for cooking and lighting, in most of the industrialised countries for energy recovery, environmental and safety reasons are used in combined heat and power(CHP) engines or as a supplement to natural. In particular, biogas to use as vehicle fuel or for grid injection there different biogas treatment steps are necessary, it is important to have a high energy content in biogas with biogas purification and upgrading. The energy content of biogas is in direct proportion to the methane content and by removing trace gases and carbon dioxide in the purification and upgrading process the energy content of biogas in increased. The process of purification and upgrading biogas generates new possibilities for its use since it can then replace natural gas, which is used extensively in many countries, However, those technologies add to the costs of biogas production. It is important to have an optimized purification and upgrading process in terms of low energy consumption and high efficiency giving high methane content in the upgraded gas. A number of technologies for purification and upgrading of biogas have been developed to use as a vehicle fuel or grid injection during the passed twenty years, and several technologies exist today and they are continually being improved. The biomethane which is produced from the purification and the upgrading process of biogas has gained increased attention due to rising oil and natural gas prices and increasing targets for renewable fuel quotes in many countries. New plants are continually being built and the number of biomethane plants was around 100 in 2009.

  • Natural gas is attracting attention as an alternative to existing fossil fuels. Natural gas has a high octane number. Therefore, knocking does not occur even if the compression ratio is increased, so that the thermal efficiency and the output can be improved. And it is relatively easy to apply the natural gas supply system to the internal combustion engine hardware system. In this study, a gasoline direct injection turbo engine was converted into a natural gas port injection type turbo engine. Therefore, the combustion and performance of the engine are measured and compared comprehensively in the region where the turbo operates.
