It is well known that the stratified charge combustion has many kind of advantages to combustion characteristics, such as higher thermal efficiency and less CO, NOx levels than conventional homogeneous mixture combustion. Although this combustion can be caused low fuel consumption, it is produced the high unburned hydrocarbon and soot levels because of different equivalence ratio in the combustion chamber. Moreover it has a lot of possibility of low output and misfire if the mixture gas would not be in existence around the spark plug. In this paper, fundamental studies for stratified combustion were carried out using a constant volume combustion chamber. The effect of locally mixture gas distribution according to control the direct injection and premixed injection in the chamber were examined experimentally. In addition, the effects of turbulence on stratified charge combustion process were observed by schlieren photography.
In this study, three visualization methods, Schlieren, Shadowgraph, and Mie-scattering, were applied to compare diesel and gasoline spray structures. Fuels were injected into a high pressure/high temperature constant volume chamber under the same ambient pressure and temperature condition of low load in gasoline direct injection compression ignition (GDCI) engine. Two injection pressures (40 and 80 MPa), two ambient pressures (4.2 and 1.7 MPa), and two ambient temperatures (908 and 677 K) were use. The images from the different methods were overlapped to show liquid and vapor phases more clearly. It was found that the gasoline fuel is more appropriate to form a lean mixture.
In a diesel engine, air-fuel mixture formation and ignition delay period have great influence on the performance of engine. Their main factors are combustion chamber shape, fuel injection system. air volume, air flow and so on. So, the combustion process in the cylinder is complex because of many factors which have direct and indirect effects on it. In this study, we take into consideration of scavenging pressure and scavenging temperature that are hewn as the main factor to the combustion process of two-stroke D.1. diesel engine. It is taken a picture of the combustion flame process for combustion chamber of re-entrant type and cylindrical type. So, it is applied to the basis data of combustion chamber design from an image analysis.
Pre-combustion chamber type indirect diesel engines have different combustion characteristics compared with those of common rail direct injection engine. The CONVERGE, specific engine CFD program, was used to simulate hollow cone spray model and combustion. The air-fuel mixture flow propagating from pre-combustion chamber to cylinder was concentrated at top half and center of the pre-combustion chamber throat. Stronger mixture flow was formed at smaller and longer throat cases. As a result, thermal efficiency and fuel consumption were improved for modified throat shape and the soot emission was also reduced.
Recently, the application of variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to the high speed direct injection (HSDI) diesel engine has gained more and more interest in automotive industry. A steady state experimental investigation has been undertaken on a 1.5L HSDI diesel engine to verify the benefits of VGT comparing to the standard engine having a waste gate turbocharger (WGT). Specifically, part load performances (e.g., fuel economy and emission) have been investigated under various vane angles of the VGT. The results show that the real exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate as well as the pumping loss is very important to improve break specific fuel consumption (BSFC). It was previously known that the pumping loss only is a main parameter. In addition, the trade-off relationship between BSFC and NOx according to boost pressure, and the decreasing tendency of NOx with increasing real EGR rate have been verified. 1-D numerical analysis also has been performed, and the numerical results are in good agreement with experimental results.
The concentration and spatial distribution of vapor phases in DI (Direct Injection) gasoline spray were measured quantitatively by exciplex fluorescence method. Fluorobenzene and DEMA (diethylmethylamine) in a solution of hexane were used as the exciplex-forming dopants. The fluorescence intensity of vapor phase were obtained by ICCD camera with the appropriate filter The relationship between fluorescence intensity and vapor concentration was induced fer the purpose of a quantitative analysis. The 2-D vapor/liquid images of fuel spray were captured under the evaporation condition, and the spatial distribution of vapor concentration was obtained. The spatial distribution of liquid phase had hollow-cone shape. And the vapor phase was widely distributed in the whole spray. The behavior of vapor phase was significantly affected by second flow such as entrainment, vortex, while that of liquid phase was scarcely affected.
In the automotive industry, cold-drawn austenitic stainless steel is commonly used to handle high fuel pressures in gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. In this study, we analyzed the effects of main process variables such as cross-sectional shape, drawing speed and friction coefficient on the microstructure, hardness and residual stress of the drawn material in the two-step cold drawing process. By changing the cross-sectional shape in the first-step cold drawing, the possibility of improving the shape accuracy or physical properties of the finally cold-drawn fuel rail pressure sensor product was investigated.
GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines are considered as one of the candidates for next generation engines of passenger cars, which reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. In GOI engines, a high-pressure gasoline supply system is required to directly inject the fuel to combustion chambers. Because of low lubricity of gasoline fuel, the clearance between a plunger and a barrel in GDI fuel pumps is too wide to achieve smooth hydrodynamic lubrication. Thus, it is difficult to generate high-pressure condition in GDI fuel pump since large amount of leakage flow occurs between the plunger and the barrel In this study, an optimum plunger design is presented to minimize leakage in the aspect of flow control. This paper analyzes leakage flow characteristics in the clearance to improve pumping performance of GDI fuel pumps. Effects of groove in the plunger are studied according to variations of depth and width. Evaluations of pumping performance are determined by the amount of pressure drop in the leakage path assuming a constant leakage flows. Both of turbulence and incompressible models are introduced in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. Design parameters have been introduced to minimize leakage in limited space, and a methodological study on geometrical optimization has been conducted. As results of CFD analysis in various geometrical cases, optimum groove depths have been found to generate maximum sealing effects on gasoline fuel between the plunger and the barrel. This procedure offers a methodological way of an enhancement of plunger design for high-pressure GDI fuel pumps.
Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engines are recognized as main causes of the air pollution. CRDI(common rail direct injection) diesel engine is widely used for the sake of minimization on exhaust emission. Because biodiesel fuel is a renewable and alternative fuel for diesel engine, its usability is expanded. In this study, a common rail diesel engine was run with 5% of biodiesel fuel(BDF 5%) more than 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to investigate the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The data of engine performance and exhaust emissions was sampled at 1 hour intervals for analysis. When a common rail diesel engine runs on BDF 5% for long time, power and energy consumption of the engine are similar to the case using diesel fuel. The smoke emission of BDF 5% was reduced in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 15% at 4000rpm, and load of 90%. And, CO and $CO_2$ were reduced, too. On the other hand, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was slightly increased about 2%, but it was almost same as a commercial diesel fuel.
The purpose of this paper is to experimentally investigate the engine pollutant emissions and combustion characteristics of diesel engine fueled with ethanol-diesel blended fuel (bio-diesohol). The experiments were performed on a single-cylinder DI diesel engine. Two blend fuels were consisted of $15\%$ ethanol, $83.5\%$ diesel and $1.5\%$ solublizer (by volume) were evaluated: one without cetane improver (E15-D) and one with a cetane improver (E15-D+CN improver). The engine performance parameters and emissions including fuel consumption, exhaust temperature, lubricating oil temperature, Bosch smoke number, CO, NOx, and THC were measured, and compared to the baseline diesel fuel. In order to gain insight into the combustion characteristics of bio-diesohol blends, the engine combustion processes for blended fuels and diesel fuel were observed using an Engine Video System (AVL 513). The results showed that the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increased at overall engine operating conditions, but it is worth noting that the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased by up to $1-2.3\%$ with two blends when compared to diesel fuel. It is found that the engine fueled with ethanol-diesel blend fuels has higher emissions of THC, lower emissions of CO, NOx, and smoke. And the results also indicated that the cetane improver has positive effects on CO and NOx emissions, but negative effect on THC emission. Based on engine combustion visualization, it is found that ignition delay increased, combustion duration and the luminosity of flame decreased for the diesohol blends. The combustion is improved when the CN improver was added to the blend fuel.
