  • Polymer electrolyte membranes are developed for the applications to facilitated transport membranes, fuel cells and solar cells. The polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver salt show the remarkably high separation performance for olefin/paraffin mixture in the solid state; the propylene permeance is 45 GPU and the ideal selectivity of propylene/propane is 15,000. For fuel cell membranes, the effects of the presence and size of the proton transport channels on the proton conductivity and methanol permeability were investigated. The cell performance for dye-sensitized solar cells employing polymer electrolytes are measured under light illumination. The overall energy conversion efficiency reaches 5.44 % at 10 ㎽/$\textrm{cm}^2$, to our knowledge the highest value ever reported in the polymer electrolytes.

  • Polymer electrolyte fuel cells(PEFC) have been considered to be a suitable candidate for residential, portable and mobile applications, due to their high efficiency and power density, even at low operating temperature. KIER developed a 5kW class PEFC system for residential application and operated the system for over 1,000 hours. To develop a 5kW PEFC system, performance of a cell was improved through successive tests of single cell of small and large area. Fabrication of three 2,5 kW class stacks, design and fabrication of natural gas reformer, design of auxiliary equipments such as DC/DC converter, DC/AC inverter and humidifying units were carried out along with integration of components, operation and evaluation of total system. During the development period from 1999 to 2001, MEA(membrane electrode assembly) fabrication technologies, design and fabrication technologies for separators, stacking technologies and so on were developed, thereby providing basis for developing stacks of higher efficiency and power density in the future. Experience of development of natural gas reformer opened possibilities to use various kinds of fuels. Main results obtained from the development of a 5kW class PEFC system for residential application are summarized.

  • Korea is the 11th largest energy consumption country and 96% of its total energy consumption depends on imports from overseas. Therefore it is a very important task to secure renewable energy sources which can reduce both the carbon-dioxide emission and dependency on overseas energy imports. Among the various renewable energy sources, organic wastes are important sources. In Korea, 113 million toe of methane is generated from organic wastes annually, but only 3.7% is effectively used for energy conversion. Thus, it is very important to make better use of organic wastes, especially for power generation. The goals of this project are to develope the fuel supplying system of Bio Gasturbine (GT) for 5MW-class co-generation system. The fuel supplying system mainly consists of $H_2S$ removal system, Bio Gas compression system, Siloxane removal system and moisture separating systems. The fuel requirement of 5MW-class GT is at around 60% of $CH_4$, $H_2S$ (<30 ppm), Siloxane(<10 mg/$nm^3$) and supply pressure (> 25 bar) from biogas compressor. Main mechnical charateristics of Bio Gasturbine system have the specific performance; 1) high speed turbine speed (12,840 rpm) 2) very clean emmission NOx (<50 ppm) 3) high efficiency of energy conversion rate. This paper focuses on the development of design technology for food waste biogas pretreatment system for 5MW-class biogas turbine. The study also has the plan to replace the fuel of gas turbine and other distributed power systems. As the increase of bioenergy, this system help to contribute to spread more New & Renewable Energy and the establishment of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for Korea.

  • KIER has been developing a Ru-based preferential oxidation catalysts and a novel fuel processing system to provide hydrogen rich gas to residential PEMFCs system. The catalytic activity of Ru-based catalysts was investigated at different Ru loading amount and different support structure. The obtained result indicated that 2 wt% loaded Ru-based catalyst supported on ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ showed high activity in low temperature range and suppressed the methanation reaction. The developed prototype fuel processor showed thermal efficiency of 78% as a HHV basis with methane conversion of 92%. CO concentration below 10 ppm in the produced gas is achieved with separate preferential oxidation unit under the condition of $[O_2]/[CO]=2.0$. The partial load operation have been carried out to test the performance of fuel processor from 40% to 80% load, showing stable methane conversion and CO concentration below 10 ppm. The durability test for the daily start-stop and 8 h operation procedure is under investigation and shows no deterioration of its performance after 50 start-stop cycles. In addition to the system design and development.

  • A steam reformer is a chemical reactor to produce high purity hydrogen from fossil fuel. In the steam reformer, since endothermic steam reforming is heated by exothermic combustion of fossil fuel, the heat transfer between two reaction zones dominates conversion of fossil fuel to hydrogen. Steam Reforming is complex chemical reaction, mass and heat transfer due to the exothermic methane/air combustion reaction and the endothermic steam reforming reaction. Typically, a steam reformer employs burner to supply appropriate heat for endothermic steam reforming reaction which reduces system efficiency. In this study, the heat of steam reforming reaction is provided by anode-off gas combustion of stationary fuel cell. This paper presents a optimization of heat transfer effect and average temperature of cross-section using two-dimensional models of a coaxial cylindrical reactor, and analysis three-dimensional models of a coaxial cylindrical steam reformer with chemical reaction. Numerical analysis needs to dominant chemical reaction that are assumed as a Steam Reforming (SR) reaction, a Water-Gas Shift (WGS) reaction, and a Direct Steam Reforming(DSR) reaction. The major parameters of analysis are temperature, fuel conversion and heat flux in the coaxial reactor.

  • In the dissertation, a power conversion system for fuel cell is composed of a PWM inverter with LC filter in order to convert fuel cell voltage to a single phase 220[V], In addition, new insulated DC-DC converters are proposed in order that fuel cell voltage is boosted to 380[V]. In this paper, it requires smaller components than existing converters, which makes easy control. The proposed DC-DC converter controls output power by the adjustment of phase-shift width using switch S5 and S6 in the secondary switch, which provides 93-97[%] efficiency in the wide range of output voltage. Fuel cell simulator is implemented to show similar output characteristics to actual fuel cell. Appropriate dead time td enables soft switching to the range where the peak value of excitation current in a high frequency transformer is in accordance with current in the primary circuit. Moreover, appropriate setting to serial inductance La reduces communication loss arisen at light-load generator and serge voltage arisen at a secondary switch and serial diode. • Recently, Korea's municipal wastewater treatment plants generated amount of wastewater sludge per day. However, ocean dumping of sewage sludge has been prohibited since 2012 by the London dumping convention and protocol and thus removal or treatment of wastewater sludge from field sites is an important issue on the ground site. The hydrothermal carbonization is one of attractive thermo-chemical method to upgrade sewage sludge to produce solid fuel with benefit method from the use of no chemical catalytic. Hydrothermal carbonization improved that the upgrading fuel properties and increased materials and energy recovery, which is conducted at temperatures ranging from 200 to $350^{\circ}C$ with a reaction time of 30 min. Hydrothermal carbonization increased the heating value though the increase of the carbon and fixed carbon content of solid fuel due to dehydration and decarboxylation reaction. Therefore, after the hydrothermal carbonization, the H/C and O/C ratios decreased because of the chemical conversion. Energy retention efficiency suggest that the optimum temperature of hydrothermal carbonization to produce more energy-rich solid fuel is approximately $200^{\circ}C$.

  • An experimental study was conducted on a 4-stroke direct injection diesel engine to examine the combustion and emission characteristics of 1-octanol/diesel fuel blends. The concentration of 1-octanol in the fuel blends was 10%, 30%, and 50% by volume. Experiments were conducted by varying the engine torque from 6 Nm to 12 Nm at the same engine speed of 2,700 rpm. Results showed that the fuel conversion efficiency increased as the 1-octanol proportion increased under most experimental conditions. However, the brake specific fuel consumption increased due to the relatively low lower heating value of 1-octanol. The smoke opacity and the concentrations of NOx and CO emissions generally decreased with brake mean effective pressure as the 1-octanol proportion increased. On the other hand, the unburned hydrocarbon concentration increased with an ascending ratio of 1-octanol.

  • This paper presents an integrated photochemical reaction system (i.e., an artificial leaf) that uses earth-abundant catalysts for artificial photosynthesis with a carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) fixation process. The performance of the system was investigated in terms of the energy capture and conversion capabilities. A wireless configuration was achieved by directly doping cobalt oxide as an oxygen-evolving catalyst for water splitting reaction on the illuminated surface of photovoltaic (PV) cell, as well as molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) as an efficient catalyst for $CO_2$ reduction on the back substrate surfaces of the PV cell. The system produces hydrogen and carbon monoxide (CO) as sustainable fuels (i.e., synthesis gas) at around 4.5% efficiency, which implies more than 75% catalytic efficiency at the cathode. The process of solar-driven $CO_2$ conversion and water-splitting reaction is contained in one system, which is one step closer to the successful realization of artificial photosynthesis.
