Now, there are two big issues threatening global society, which are the depletion of fossil fuels and the environmental disruption. Therefore, marine diesel engine, taking up over 95% share of the marine power market, has met the environmental and economical problems, too. These problems have caused a necessity of new, alternative power systems in ships and fuel cell systems has been playing a central role as one of the alternatives. This paper analyzes the characteristics of marine fuel cell systems, R&D trends of advanced countries, and mapping out R&D strategy of Korea.
The development of fuel cell hybrid power system, as a next generation power system for solving the global warming, has been being made actively progress around passenger vehicles. Also, in case of railway vehicles in unelectrified railway line, the adoption of fuel cell hybrid power system is being studied around well-known manufacturers. This paper introduces both the configuration and the control strategy of fuel cell hybrid power system in order to apply to a light electronic railway vehicle having a repeated driving pattern of acceleration, coasting and deceleration and provides simulation results to evaluate their validity.
A new hybrid vehicle Powered by fuel cells is being developed in order to improve the fuel conversion rate and reduce air pollutions. Fuel cell electric vehicle(FCEV) is considered to be the next generation electric vehicle with on board generator. This paper is to determine the current technical status of FCEVs and assess and judge the prospect of the prospects of fuel cell electric engines.
This paper proposes the fuel cell power plants as alternative energy sources for distributed generation in Jeju Island, Korea. This will help to increase the fuel efficiency, at least double the current thermal power plants, decrease environmental pollution, virtually to none, increase the reliability of power supply, reducing the dependency of the HVDC link, and provide quality power to the growing infrastructure in meeting the requirements for the free-trade international island.
The fuel cell which converts directly chemical energy of fuel into electric energy has higher efficiency than the conventional power generation which involves several additional processes. Especially, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) of which the electrolyte is a thin proton conductive polymer membrane is affordable for portable power applications and small-scale distributed power generation including household and small building. It is very important to not only increase the efficiency of FC itself but determine the optimal operation mode. The optimal operational planning of lkW household PEMFC system based on the daily electricity and heat demand patterns was performed. The estimated economic gain was up to 20% by adoption of PEMFC system.

The world is facing a challenge in meeting its needs for energy. Global energy consumption in the last halfcentury has increased very rapidly and is expected to continue to grow over the next 50 years. However, it is expected to see significant differences between the last 50 years and the next. This paper aims at introducing a good solution to replace or work with conventional marine power plants. This includes the use of fuel cell power plant operated with hydrogen produced through water electrolysis or hydrogen produced from natural gas, gasoline, or diesel fuels through steam reforming processes to mitigate air pollution from ships.
One of the most critical issues in sol id oxide fuel cell (SOFC)running on hydrocarbon fuels is the risk of carbon formation from the fuel gas. The simple method to reduce the risk of carbon formation from the reactions is to add steam to the fuel stream, leading to the carbon gasification react ion. However, the addition of steam to fuel is not appropriate for the auxiliary power unit (APU) and potable power generation (PPG) systems due to an increase of complexity and bulkiness. In this regard, many researchers have focused on so-called 'direct methane' operation of SOFC, which works with dry methane without coking. However, coking can be suppressed only by the operation with a high current density, which may be a drawback especially for the APU and PPG systems. The single chamber fuel cell (SC-SOFC) is a novel simplification of the conventional SOFC into which a premixed fuel/air mixture is introduced. It relies on the selectivity of the anode and cathode catalysts to generate a chemical potential gradient across the cell. Moreover it allows compact and seal-free stack design. In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type mixed-gas fuel cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-structured SOFC with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites. We will discuss that the anode supported honeycomb type cell running on mixed gas condition.
