Recently it has been focused that the automobile engine has developed in a strong upward tendency for the use of the high viscosity and poorer quality fuels in achieving the high performance, fuel economy, and emission reduction. Therefore it is not easy to solve the problems between low specific fuel consumption and exhaust emission control at motor cars. In this study, it is designed and used the engine test bed which is installed with turbocharger and intercooler. In addition to equipped using CRDI by controlling injection timing with mapping modulator, it has been tested and analyzed the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emission as operating parameters, and they were engine speeds(rpm), injection timing(bTDC), and engine load(%). From the result of an experimental analysis, peak cylinder pressure and the rate of pressure rise were increased, and the location of it was closer toward top dead center according to the increasing of engine speed and load, and with advancing injection timing. The combustion characteristics are effected by fuel injection timing due to be enhanced the mass burned fraction. Using the engine dynamometer for analyzing the engine performance, the engine torque and power have been enhanced according to advancing the fuel injection timing. In analyzing of exhaust emission, there has been a trade-off between PM and NOx with increasing of engine speed and load, and with advanced injection timing. The experimental data are shown that the formation of NOx has increased and PM, vice versa.

This study aims to investigate the effects of soybean biodiesel fuel on exhaust emissions with regards to two combustion modes: conventional combustion(existence of PM-NOx trade-off behavior) and low temperature combustion(LTC) in a 1.7 L common rail direct injection diesel engine. As compared to conventional combustion, LTC was achieved by adopting a heavier exhaust gas recirculation and strategic injection parameter optimization. Two sets of fuels, i.e. ultra low sulfur diesel(ULSD) and 20% volumetric blends of soybean biodiesel with ULSD(B20) were used. Regardless of the fuel type, in LTC the simultaneous reduction of PM and NOx was observed and both levels were significantly lower than in case of conventional combustion. Under the given engine operating condition in the case of conventional combustion, B20 produced less PM and more NOx than ULSD. In the case of LTC combustion, B20 produced more PM and NOx than ULSD.

In order to judge that non-esterified soybean oil could be used on diesel engine with electronic control of fuel injection system, The test of combustion performance using only gas oil, gas oil blended with esterified bio-diesel oil 5% and non-esterified soybean oil 5% were carried out. It is noticed that most performances of gas oil blended with esterified bio-diesel oil 5% and non-esterified 5% have similar characteristics but non-esterified bio-diesel oil 5% emitted smaller NOx, resulting from fuel NO.

Dimethyl Ether(DME) is an alternative fuel for diesel engine, it is renewable and offers potential reductions in emissions. This work was conducted to figure out the macroscopic behavior and the atomization characteristics of DME using a common-rail injection system. The macroscopic behavior was visualized with the spray visualization system composed of a Nd;YAG laser and an ICCD camera. The atomization characteristics were investigated in terms of axial mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter(SMD) and droplet distributions obtained from a phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA) system. In this study, it was revealed that the macroscopic behavior and the atomization characteristics of DME are similar compared with commercial diesel fuel. However, DME fuel has a shorter spray tip penetration and a small SMD due to the effect of evaporation characteristics.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of pilot injection strategy on the combustion and emissions characteristics in a four cylinder common-rail direct injection diesel engine fueled with biodiesel(soybean oil) blend. The tested fuel was mixed of 20% biodiesel and 80% ULSD(Ultra low sulfur diesel) by volume ratio. The experiments were performed under two load conditions, and results were compared with those of single injection. The experimental results showed that the ignition delay of BD20 was shorter than compared to that of ULSD in the case of low load condition. Also, the fuel consumption of BD20 was more higher than that of ULSD. Fuel consumption by applied pilot injection strategy were generally decreased compared with that of single injection. In the case of pilot injection, the exhaust emissions such as CO and HC emissions were decreased compared to the single injection.
Performance of DI diesel engine with high-pressure fuel injection equipment is directly related to its emission characteristics and fuel consumption. So, the electro-hydraulic injector for the common-rail injection system should be designed to meet the precise high fuel delivery control capability. Currently, most high pressure injector in use has a needle driven by the solenoid coil energy or the piezo actuator controlled by charge-discharge of output pulse current. In this study, macroscopic spray approaching method was applied under constant volume chamber to research the performance of three different injectors : solenoid, indirect-acting piezo and direct-acting piezo type for CR direct-injection. LED back illumination for Mie scattering was applied on the liquid spray visible of direct-acting piezo injector, including hydraulic-servo type solenoid and piezo-driven injectors. As main results, we found that a direct-acting piezo injector had better a spray tip penetration than hydraulic-servo injectors in spray visualization.
Compared to gasoline engines, diesel engines with a relatively simple ignition system are more advantageous in the application of biodeisel fuel to engine. Then in this study the comparative analysis on the spray characteristics and combustion emissions characteristic between the biodiesel(soybean oil) and diesel, the fuel for commercial diesel engine, was performed with common rail injection system. Injection pressure and ratio of biodiesel blended fuel were selected as main experimental variables. Consequently, it can be found that there is no significant difference in the macro characteristics of the spray behavior(spray penetration and spray angle) in response to change in the blend ratio of soybean oil and diesel at a fixed injection pressure, in particular, soot creation in combustion emissions in the region of low pressure was greatly affected by the blend ratio of soybean oil, however, the creation in the region of high pressure was almost unaffected by the blend ratio because of promoted atomization.

This work was investigated on pilot injection strategy of blended fuels(Diesel-DME) for combustion and emissions in a single cylinder direct injection compression ignition engine. Diesel and DME were blended by the method of weight ratio. Weight ratios for diesel and DME were 95:05 and 90:10 respectively. dSOI between main and pilot injection timing was varied. A total amount of injected fuels(single injection) was adjusted to obtain the fixed BMEP as 4.2 bar in order to compare with the fuel conditions. Also, the amount of pilot injection fuel was varied by 5%, 10% and 20% of total injection fuel. The engine was equipped with common rail and injection pressure is 700 bar at 1200 rpm. As a result, when mixing ratio increase, indicated thermal efficiency was increased in comparison with DD 100 and CO, THC and smoke were lower than DD 100. The influence of reducing NOx by pilot injection was more effective than DD 100. When pilot injection quantity increase, abrupt increase of NOx was occured at pilot injection quantity of 20%.
In this study, Injection rate tests of a Diesel common-rail injector have been performed with injection volume measurement type injection rate test system EMI21 for construction of injector model can be used in an engine calibration mean valued model. The measuring principle of the test system is based on measurement of dispalcement of a movable measurement piston by the volume of fluid released by the injector. From these injection rate test results, the characteristics on shape of instantaneous injection rate and injection fuel amount have been investigated and injection fuel amount calculation equation based on test results has been newly constructed. This equation is very simple and calculation error is less than 5% with test results for wide range injection pressure (200~1800 bar) and injection duration ($200{\sim}1800{\mu}s$) conditions. So, it is anticipated that newly constructed simple injection fuel amount model in this study can be efficiently used on engine calibration and control model.

Emission standards for passenger diesel engines are becoming more and more stringent. Especially, Europe started the regulation of nano-particles from 2011 with EURO 5b. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of fuel injection strategy on combustion and nano-particle emission in a small diesel engine. In this study, we conducted combustion analysis and measured both the weight of PM and number of nano-particels. At first, the optimum injection timing was determined with fixed engine operating conditions, such as engine speed, load, and fuel injection quantity. After that, the injection timing was controlled, and the effect of pilot injection was investigated. The number of nano-particles increased as engine load decreases, and it increased up to 10 times depending on the change of injection timing. The weight of PM emissions was increased at low load, and the PM emissions increased with increasing the number of pilot injections.
