  • This paper described the effects of DME blended fuel on the engine combustion and emission characteristics of four cylinder CRDI diesel engine. Biodiesel was added into the DME fuel in order to improve the low kinematic viscosity of DME fuel. In this work, the experiment was performed under th various injection timings and injection strategy at constant engine speed and engine load. To maintain the fuel pressure and temperature, pressure and temperature controllers were installed to the DME fuel system. The results show that ignition delay was shortened and combustion duration was extended when DME blended fuel is supplied. Despite of slightly higher NOx emission with DME blended fuel at equal conditions in comparison with those of diesel fuel, the engine showed lower HC and CO emission characteristics.

  • This study is mainly focused on the assessment of return, semi return, and returnless fuel supply system for an LPi engine. In order to compare the return type with returnless one with various LPG blends, combustion analysis and cyclic THC emission characteristic were tested at the part load operating condition of the LPi engine. Considering heat balance of each fuel supply systems, pressure and temperature increment of return type showed lower at the fuel rail during idle warm up operation. However, those of returnless type at LPG tank maintained stable and slow increment because the heat transfer from the LPi engine was minimized. Finally, hot restartability of each fuel supply systems were evaluated with the various LPG blends and fuel temperatures. As a result, semi return type has equivalent performance to return type considering combustion and emission characteristic, hot restartability performance for LPi engine.

  • This research investigated spray characteristics using LPG fuel under compression ignition to contribute to develop a high efficiency LPG fuel is an environmentally-friendly fuel since it emits lower $CO_2$ compare to other conventional fuels. In order to observe spray process, a high speed digital camera and high pressure common-rail injector were applied. Using the spray behaviors of LPG and diesel fuel from the experiment, this research analyzed the mixing process of air-fuel mixture numerically with FLUENT 6.3 when LPG and diesel fuel injected directly into the cylinder while compression stroke occurs. Spray characteristics of LPG fuel was investigated by using numerical method, in which KH-RT model was adapted for phase change. As a result of numerical analysis, this work found out that LPG spray has a wider mixing formation and uniform diffusion of air-fuel mixture compare to diesel.

  • In this study we investigated the regeneration methods for the lean $NO_x$ trap (LNT) catalyst in a 2.2L direct injection diesel engine. The regeneration methods were 1) in-cylinder post fuel injection and 2) external fuel injection strategy. The in-cylinder post fuel injection method uses in-cylinder injectors with the addition of the post fuel injection to supply enough reductants such as CO, $H_2$, THC. The external fuel injection method was enabled by installing a fuel injector with a wide spray angle before the LNT catalyst. Through the engine experiment, the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency, the amount of reductant exhaust gases, fuel consumption, and temperature behavior in the LNT catalyst were evaluated and compared for the two regeneration methods.

  • In this study, butane 100% was used as fuel to verify the real fuel effect such as vapor pressure variation due to temperature change. A MPI fuel injection system for V-6 engine, which has reverse 'L' type cross section to minimize the possibility of liquid phase injection, was composed and one bank was operated under sequential injection scheme. Flow rate were measured according to injection duration, interval, and pressure. Also occurring of liquid phase injection was monitored with varying vaporizer and fuel rail temperature. The result shows that basic characteristics of injection is a relatively difference between air and LPG injection. Under cold start condition, however, the occurrence of liquid injection becomes more severe as the pressure increases, and sufficiently high temperature both in vaporizer and fuel rail is very important to insure gaseous injection. In addition, the temperature of vaporizer plays more important role in keeping LPG vapor state and the reverse 'L' type cross section of the rail is available to prevent liquid injection.

  • The purpose of this study was compared the spray, combustion and emissions (NOx, CO, HC, smoke) characteristics of a typical fuel (100% Diesel, DME) and Diesel-DME blended fuel in a Constant Volume Chamber (CVC) and a single-cylinder DI diesel engine. Spray characteristics were investigated under various ambient and fuel injection pressures when the Diesel-DME blended ratio is varied. The parameters of spray sturdy were spray shape, penetration length, and spray angle. Common types of injectors having seven holes and made by Bosch were used. As of use, the typical fuel (100% Diesel, DME) and the blended fuel by mixture ratio 95:5, 90:10 (Diesel:DME) were used. The Injection pressure was fixed by 70.1MPa, when the ambient Pressure was varied 0.1, 2.6 and 5.1 MPa. The combustion experiments was conducted with single cylinder engine equipped with common rail injection system. injection pressure is 70 MPa. The amount of injected fuels is adjusted to obtain the fixed input calorie value as 972.2 J/cycle in order to compare with the fuel conditions.

  • The use of inedible vegetable oils as substitute for diesel fuel in compression ignition engine is of significance because of the great need for edible oil as food, and the reduction of biodiesel production cost etc. Jatropha curcas oil which is a leading candidate for the commercialization of inedible vegetable oils is selected in this study for reviewing the application in CI engine as an alternative fuel. The important properties of jatropha oil (JO) and JO biodiesel are summarized from the various sources in the literature. It is found that five different types of alternative fuel from JO such as neat JO, JO blends with diesel or other fuel, neat JO biodiesel, JO biodiesel blends with diesel or other fuel and degummed JO were extensively examined in the diesel engine. Two different application types of alternative fuels from JO such as preheating and dual fuelling were also tested, It should be pointed out that most of these applications are limited to single cylinder conditions. The systematic study for the selection of effective application method is required. It is clear that the blends of JOME and diesel can replace diesel fuel up to 10% by volume for running the existing common rail direct injection systems without any durability problems. The systematic assessment of spray characteristics of different types of JO and its derivatives for use as diesel engine fuel is also required.
