One of proposed Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) concept is fully ceramic micro-encapsulated fuel (FCMF). FCMF using uranium mononitride (UN) has better safety aspects than $UO_2$ pellet fuel although it might not have a better neutronic performance due to the presence of matrix and high neutron-induced interaction of $^{14}N$. Before implementing UN-FCMF technology in Small-PWR, further research must be taken place to make sure the proposed design of fuel assembly has inherent safety features and maintain the fuel performance. This study focusses on the neutronic analysis of UN-FCMF based fuel assembly using Serpent and SCALE codes. It is shown in the proposed fuel assembly design has inherent safety features with respect to the fuel temperature reactivity coefficient, void reactivity coefficient, and moderator temperature reactivity coefficient. It is noted that the use of FCMF leads to a lower ratio of burnup to $^{235}U$ enrichment ratio compared to the $UO_2/Zr$ fuel.
The mechanical properties of the hydrogen valve responsible for supplying and blocking hydrogen gas in a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) were researched. Mechanical properties by hydrogen embrittlement were investigated by coating chromium nitride (CrN) and titanium nitride (TiN) on aluminum alloy by arc ion plating method. The coating layer was deposited to a thickness of about 2 ㎛, and a slow strain rate test (SSRT) was conducted after hydrogen embrittlement to determine the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the CrN and TiN coating layers. The CrN-coated specimen presented little decrease in mechanical properties until 12 hours of hydrogen charging due to its excellent resistance to hydrogen permeation. However, both the CrN and TiN-coated specimens exhibited deterioration in mechanical properties due to the peeling of the coating layer after 24 hours of hydrogen charging. The specimens coated at 350 ℃ presented a significant decrease in ultimate tensile strength due to abnormal grain growth.
Exhaust emissions were characterized for a fleet of 10 alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVx) including 5 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. 3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles and 2 85% methanol/15% California Phase 2 gasoline (M85) vehicles. In addition to the standard regulated emissions and detailed speciation of organic gas compounds, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to measure ammonia (NH$_3$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2$O) emissions. NH$_3$, emissions averaged 0.124 g/mi for the vehicle fleet with a range from <0.004 to 0.540 g/mi. $N_2$O emissions averaged 0.022 g/mi over the vehicle fleet with range from <0.002 to 0.077 g/mi. Modal emissions showed that both NH$_3$, and $N_2$O emissions began during catalyst light-off and continued as the catalyst reached its operating temperature. $N_2$O emissions primarily were formed during the initial stages of catalyst light-off. Detailed speciation measurements showed that the principal component of the fuel was also the primary organic gas species found in the exhaust. In particular, methane, propane and methanol composed on average 93%, 79%, and 75% of the organic gas emissions, respectively, for the CNG, LPG. and M85 vehicles.
The multi-films of a metallic film and a transparent conducting oxide (TCO, indium-tin oxide, ITO) film were formed on the stainless steel 316 and 304 plates by a sputtering method and an E-beam method and then the external metallic region of the stainless steel bipolar plates was converted into the metal nitride films through an annealing process. The multi-film formed on the stainless steel bipolar plates showed the XRD patterns of the typical indium-tin oxide, the metallic phase and the metal substrate and the external nitride film. The XRD pattern of the thin film on the bipolar plates modified showed two metal nitride phases of CrN and $Cr_2N$ compound. Surface microstructural morphology of the multi-film deposited bipolar plates was observed by AFM and FE-SEM. The electrical resistivity of the stainless steel bipolar plates modified was evaluated.
Paraffin bio-based hydrotreated biodiesel(HBD) is originated from vegetable oil(the process can also be applied to animal fat) with the the chemical structure $C_nH_{2n+2}$. In the number of process of the oil or fat, the hydrogenation is significantly important to create a bio-based diesel fuel. This study is focused on lubricity characteristics of BTL diesel blends to use alternative diesel fuel in Korea. The BTL diesel are blended the different volume ratios (HBD 5(5 vol.% HBD - 95 vol.% diesel), HBD 10, HBD 20, HBD 30, HBD 40 and HBD 50. HBD with paraffin compounds showed a very high centane number, low sulfur content and free aromatic compound. Especially, the wear scar of HBD showed poor lubricity compared to automotive diesel due to the fuel composition, low sulfur content and free aromatic compound. Also, the lubricity specification of automotive diesel with different six HBD blends is within the limit by the Korean standards. Finally, HBD as an alternative diesel fuel is challengeable in transportation sector of Korea.
In this paper, the effects of oxygen component in blended fuel on the exhaust emissions have been investigated far direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for th? commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuels which have three kinds of fuels and various mixed rates. And, it was tried to analyze not only total hydrocarbon but individual hydrocarbons(C$_1$∼ C$\_$6/) in exhaust gases using gas chromatography to seek the reason far remarkable reduction of smoke emission on various oxygenated fuels. This study carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel fuel blended DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether), MTBE(methyl tart-butyl ether) and EGBE(ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether). The results of this study show that individual hydrocarbons as well as total hydrocarbon of oxygenated fuel are reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel.
Mobile fuel cell is highlighted in these days because mobile fuel cell can contain more energy than existing batteries. Nowadays mobile devices like cellular phone, PMP(portable multi-media player), notebook, and etc. need more energy, But existing batteries like Li-ion or Ni-MH batteries are not going to satisfy such demands. In this paper, mobile fuel cell is developed. Its size is 50*70*8mm and it is made of aluminium plates. The fuel cell type is PEM and the fuel is pure hydrogen and oxygen.
This study was carried out to improve the design of fuel injection pump for marine medium diesel engine. For this purpose, all parts of fuel injection pump were modeled and simulated using CATIA V5R19, FLUENT & MSC Nastran. Flow analysis for plunger cylinder and structural analysis for plunger, roller and spring, which were considered as essential parts of fuel injection pump, were performed to find the optimal design of fuel injection pump. As the results, flow of fluid in plunger cylinder was showed good results in case of 7.7~8.0m/s of plunger velocity. Furthermore, it was confirmed that plunger, roller and spring could be operated safely under 1,800bar pressure.
An experimental investigation on the reduction of nitrogen oxide emission from swirling, turbulent diffusion flames was conducted using multi air staged combustor, The combustor utilizes swirler to dampen fuel/air mixing, allowing an extended residence time for fuel pyrolysis and fuel-N conversion chemistry in an locally fuel-rich environment prior to burnout. This process also allow to reduce thermal NOx formation to lessen the temperature of reaction zone. The aerodynamic process therefore emulates the conventional staged combustion process, but without the need for the physically separate fuel-rich and -lean stages. Parametric studies on the ratios of each staged air and droplet size were carried out the feasibility of fuel/air mixing for low NOx combustion with diesel and pyridine mixed diesel fuel oil.
