In this paper, works related to enhancement of the CHF are reviewed in terms of fundamental mechanisms and practical applications. Studies on CHF enhancement in forced convection are divided into two categories, CHF enhancement of internal flow in tubes and enhancement of CHF in the nuclear fuel bundle. Methods of enhancing the CHF of internal flows in tubes include enhancement of the swirl flow using twisted tapes, a helical coil, and a grooved surface; promotion of flow mixing using a hypervapotron; altering the characteristics of the heated surface using porous coatings and nano-fluids; and changing the surface tension of the fluid using additives such as surfactants. In the fuel bundle, mixing vanes or wire wrapped rods can be employed to enhance the CHF by changing the flow distributions. These methods can be applied to practical heat exchange systems such as nuclear reactors, fossil boilers, fusion reactors, etc.

Self flue gas recirculation flow is an effective method for low NOx emission in a regenerative low NOx burner. The object of this study is to analyze self flue gas recirculating flow by varying the jet velocity of the combustion air. Fuel and air flow rates are fixed and combustion air jet nozzle diameters are 13, 6.5 and 5mm. The stoichiometric line is obtained from the concentration of fuel using the acetone PLIF technique. It is found that self flue gas recirculating flow is entrained into that line using the two color PIV technique. As the jet velocity of combustion air is increased, the flue gas entrainment rate into the stoichiometric line is increased. This result suggests that NOx emission can be reduced due to the effects of flue gas lowering the flame temperature.

Experimental study on the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of a curved tube bundle in single phase downward cross flow is investigated for the design qualification and analysis input preparation of helical coiled steam generator tubing. A 6×9 normal square curved tube array with equal and different vertical/horizontal pitch-to-diameter ratio was under-tested up to 6 m/s in term of gap flow velocity to measure the critical velocity for FEI. The critical velocity for FEI was measured at the turning point from the vibration amplitude plot along the gap flow velocity. Our test results were compared with straight tube results and published data in the design guideline. The applicability of the current design guidelines to a curved tube bundle is also assessed. We found that introducing frequency difference in a curved tube array increases the critical velocity for fluidelastic instability.
In-cylinder flows such as tumble and swirl play an important role on the engine combustion efficiencies and emission formations. The tumble flow, which is dominant in current high performance gasoline engines, is able to effect fuel consumptions and emissions under a partial load condition in addition to the volumetric efficiency under a wide open throttle condition. Therefore, it is important to optimize the tumble ratio of a gasoline engine for better fuel economy, lower emissions, and maximum volumetric efficiency. First step for optimizing a tumble ratio is to measure a tumble ratio accurately. For a tumble ratio measurement, many different methods have been developed and used such as steady flow rig, PIV, PTV, and LDV. However, it is not well known about the relations among the measured tumble ratios using different methods. The purpose of this research is to correlate the tumble ratios measured using three different methods and find out merits and demerits of each measurement method. In this research the tumble flow was measured, compared, and correlated using three different measurement methods at the same engine: steady flow rig; 2-dimensional PIV; and 3-dimensional PTV water flow rig.

In-cylinder spray flow motion plays an important in the adjustment of mixture preparation with a fundamental spray characteristics and in-cylinder flow field well in direct-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the fundamental spray characteristics such as mean drop size, velocity distribution, spray angle were measured and in-cylinder spray flow motion was visualized in order to optimize intake port, piston top land and combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass-produced G야 engine. For these experiments, the PDPA measurements and Mie scattering technique were used for detailed spray characteristics and in-cylinder spray motions were obtained by use of ICCD camera through the single-cylinder optical engine. From the experimental results, the test injector shows a good low-end linearity between the dynamic flow and fuel injection pulse width and the fuel spray of 20mm or less in SMD with good spray symmetry. In addition, the in-cylinder tumble flow has more effect on the homogeneous mixture formation than that of in-cylinder swirl flow at early injection mode and the in-cylinder swirl flow plays a better role of stratified mixture preparation than tumble flow at late injection mode.

A high-pressure fuel pump is a key component in a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine; thus, understanding its flow characteristics is essential for improving the engine power and fuel efficiency. In this study, AMESim, which is a hydraulic analysis program, was used to analyze the performance of the high-pressure fuel pump. However, since AMESim uses a one-dimensional model for the system analysis, it does not accurately analyze the complicated flow characteristics. Thus, Fluent, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, was used to calculate the flow rates and net forces at the intake and discharge ports of the high-pressure fuel pump where turbulent flow occurs. The CFD analysis results for various pressure conditions and valve lifts were used as look-up tables for the AMEsim model. The CFD analysis results complemented the AMEsim results, and thus, improved the accuracy of the performance analysis results for the high-pressure fuel pump.

For gasoline engines, a three-way catalytic converter that has the maximum efficiency at stoichiometric air/fuel ratio is used to clean up the exhaust gas. So a precise air/fuel ratio control is necessary to maximize the catalytic conversion efficiency, For a transient condition, a fred-forward air/fuel ratio control method that estimates the air mass inducted into a cylinder is being used. In this study, a fuel injection map that makes an accurate air/fuel ratio control possible was constructed for the very same transient condition. For the same condition above, intake air model and fuel model were refined so that fuel injection values based on air mass through a throttle valve and intake manifold pressure are equal to the map values.

This paper describes the fuel spray characteristics of gasoline port injectors such as the breakup procedures of liquid fuel, breakup and extinction behaviors of fuel spray at nozzle tip, time history of SMD and velocity distribution of fuel spray in the direction of fuel stream. Pintle-type gasoline fuel injector was used to analyze mentioned spray characteristics. In order to visualize the fuel spray behaviors and to measure the droplet mean diameter and velocities of spray droplets, the Schlieren method, digital image processing and auto-correlation PIV were applied in this study. In addition, the spray characteristics according to the variation of time were considered. The results of fuel spray show that the liquid sheet breakup starts at 10mm downstream actively. The flying time is approximately 4msec between 50mm and 80mm down the nozzle tip. Also, SMD of fuel spray, the number of droplets and fuel velocity distribution at each point of downstream are discussed.

High efficiency operation is required for motors of vehicle to increase fuel efficiency due to the regulation of exhaust gas. This paper presents a control method of fuel pressure to increase fuel efficiency and a sensorless control method of BLDC motor to get higher efficiency than conventional brushed DC motor. Initial rotor position of BLDC motor is detected from current value that is occurred by test voltage pulse and rotor is accelerated by defined sequence to enter sensorless operation mode. The algorithm to control flow rate of fuel pump uses PI controller that is control motor speed to maintain the target fuel pressure commanded by ECU.
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) continue to be among the most promising alternative energy devices. This paper addresses i-V characteristics of SOFC with a focus on air flow rate along the planar anode electrodes. To address this, detailed Butler-Volmer kinetics are implemented in a general-purpose CFD code FLUENT. The numerical results were validated against experimental data from the literature showing excellent match with i-V polarization data ranging 1V-0.4V. Numerical calculations of fuel cell operation under different flow rare conditions were performed in three-dimensional geometries. Results are presented in terms of concentration distribution of hydrogen, oxygen, and water. The simulations and results indicate that advanced CFD with UDF(User-Defined Function) of Butler-Volmer kinetics can be used to identify the conditions leading to air flow rate and specific surface area and guide development of operating conditions and improve the fuel cell system performance.
