The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition, and combustion of liquid fuel spray injected into high pressure environment. The unsteady, multi-dimensional models were used for realistic simulation of spray as well as prediction of accurate ignition delay time. The Separated Flow (SF) model which considers the finite rate of transport between liquid and gas phases was employed to represent the interactions between spray and gas field. Among the SF models, the Discrete Droplet Model (DDM) which simulates the spray using finite number of representative samples of discrete droplets was adopted. The Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation was used to analyze the two-phase interactions. In order to predict an evaporation rate of droplet in high pressure environment, the high pressure vaporization model was applied using thermodynamic equilibrium and phase equilibrium at droplet surface. The high pressure effect as well as high temperature effect was considered in the calculation of liquid and gas properties. In case of vaporization, an interaction between droplets was studied through the simulation of spray. The interaction is shown up differently whether the ambient gas field is at normal pressure or high pressure. Also, the characteristics of spray behavior in high pressure environment were investigated through the comparison with normal ambient pressure case. In both cases, the spray behaviors are simulated through the distributions of temperature and reaction rate in gas field.
The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence ($OH{\ast}$) image and its Abel inversion image at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure. Also NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ${\sim}341.8$ Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. Also an additional information on active control to suppress the combustion instabilities was obtained. For lean premixed combustion, strong correlation between $OH{\ast}$ and NOx emissions was expected largely due to the exponential dependence of thermal NOx mechanism on flame temperature.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) aluminum composite powders were deposited to form coatings using a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying process. High thermal energy and contact with atmospheric oxygen were supplied as the MWCNT aluminum composite particles were exposed to a gas flow field at high temperature (${\sim}3.0{\times}10^3$ K) during HVOF spraying. As a result, the particles underwent full or partial melting and rapid solidification due to the high thermal energy, and the exposure to oxygen induced the interfacial reaction of MWCNTs within the particle. The electrical and mechanical properties of MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were evaluated based on microstructure analysis. Electrical resistivity, elastic modulus, and micro-hardness, of the MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were higher than those of pure aluminum coating. The contribution of MWCNTs to the aluminum matrix can be attributed to their high electrical conductivity, dispersion hardening and anchoring effects. The relationship among the properties and the interaction of the MWCNTs with the aluminum matrix is discussed.
A mathematical model for the waste heat recovery system for an engine was developed. The model based on the experimental data reported before was validated and was used to predict the waste heat recovery and recoverable heat of the engine at various operating conditions of the engine and the system. The model was also used to determine flow rates of the circulating water in the system for a certain temperature increment of the water at various operating conditions of the engine to give basic data to design the system. Stability of the system performance was tested on subjects of vapor lock problem, thermal characteristics of the thermostatic valve, and temperature variation of the circulating water in the engine and fuel consumption of the engine during each mode of the system operation and its change into the other. The test showed that the system operation was stable enough. Temperature profile in the thermal energy storage (TES) was observed during storing thermal energy, and thermal stratification in the TES was well formed acceptable to be used in the system. Finally a scheme to automatize the system was suggested.
Partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics in order to develop a prediction model for turbulent flame lift off. The essence of flame hole dynamics is derivation of the random walk mapping, from the flame-edge theory, which governs expansion or contraction of flame holes initially created by local quenching events. The numerical simulation for flame hole dynamics is carried out in two stages. First, a direct numerical simulation is performed for constant-density fuel-air channel mixing layer to obtain the turbulent flow and mixing fields, from which a time series of two dimensional scalar dissipation rate array is extracted at a fixed virtual flame surface horizontally extending from the end of split plate to the downstream. Then, the Lagrangian simulation of the flame hole random walk mapping projected to the scalar dissipation rate array yields temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its statistics on partial quenching characteristics. The statistical results exhibit that the chance of partial quenching is strongly influenced by the crossover scalar dissipation rate while almost unaffected by the iteration number of the mapping that can be regarded as a flame-edge speed.
This study considers the feasibility of using the low cost assembled separator. The graphite plate has been widely used as the separator in the field of PEMFCs(Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) industry because of its excellent material properties such as good corrosion resistance, good electrical conductance and so on. However, there are some problems for the commercialization due to its poor cost effectiveness for the large volume manufacturing and lack of mechanical strength. From this respect, this study has focused on the manufacturing technology in order to reduce the price for the commercialization of separator. This study also shows that the assembled separator of the suggested structure, which is composed of grafoil and PC(PolyCarbonate) materials, could be manufactured at low cost enough for the mass production. The flow fields produced by cutting foils and the base plates of the separators were simply made by mechanical work.

The thermodynamic second law analysis, which means available energy or exergy analysis, for the indicated performance of Otto cycle engine has been carried out. Each operating process of the engine is simplified and modeled into the thermodynamic cycle. The calculation of the lost work and exergy through each process has been done with the thermodynamic relations and experimental data. The experimental data were measured from the test of single cylinder Otto cycle engine which operated at 2500 rpm, WOT(Wide Open Throttle) and MBT(Minimum advanced spark timing for Best Torque) condition with different fuels: gasoline, methanol and mixture of butane-methanol called M90. Experimental data such as cylinder pressure, air and fuel flow rate, exhaust gas temperature, inlet gas temperature and etc. were used for the analysis. The proposed model and procedure of the analysis are verified through the comparison of the work done in the study with experimental results. The calculated results show that the greatest lost work is generated during combustion process. And the lost work during expansion, exhaust, compression and induction process follows in order.
Flow-induced vibration in heat exchanger (or fuel rod) in nuclar power plant can cause dynamic interactions between tubes and tube supports resulting in fretting-wear. To increase the reliability and design life of heat exchanger components, design criteria that establish acceptable limits of vibration and minimize fretting wear are necessary. The fretting-wear rate is dependent upon material combination, contact configuration, environmental conditions and tube-to tube support dynamic interaction. It is demostrated that the fretting -wear rate correlates well with tube-to-support contact force or work rate. The tube-to-support dynamic interaction, which consists of dynamic contact forces and tube motion, is used to relate single-span wear data to real heat exchanger configurations consisting of multi-span tube bundles. This paper describes the test facility to measure tube-to-support dynamic impact force and reports its dynamic characteristics through the four impact tests - a force transduces independent and external impact tests, central ring inside impact test and additional cylinder impact test. Through the tests the impact parameter change dependent upon the material difference of impacting ball is studied, and the impact parameters of Force Transducer Assembly components are measured. And also the dynamic behavior of Force Transducer Assembly is analyzed. The force measurement technique herein is shown to provide a reasonable measure of dynamic contact forces.

A numerical study was conducted to have the effect of $CO_2$ addition to fuel on the chemical reaction mechanism with the change of the initial concentration of $CO_2$ and the axial velocity gradient. From this study, it was found that there were two serious effects of $CO_2$ addition on a non-premixed flame ; a diluent effect by the reactive species reduction and chemical effect of the breakdown of $CO_2$ by the third-body collision and thermal dissociation. Especially, the chemical effect was serious at the lower velocity gradient of the axial flow. It was certain that the mole fraction profile of $CO_2$ was deflected and CO was increased with the initial concentration of $CO_2$. It was also ascertained that the breakdown of $CO_2$ would cause the increasing of CO mole fraction at the reaction region. It was also found that the addition of $CO_2$ did not alter the basic skeleton of $H_2-O_2$ reaction mechanism, but contributed to the formation and destruction of hydrocarbon products such as HCO. The conversion of CO was also suppressed and $CO_2$ played a role of a dilution in the reaction zone at the higher axial velocity gradient.

This paper presents the combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel from a conventional pressureswirl nozzle of a small-scale burner. The nozzle has orifice diameters of 0.256 mm and liquid flow rates raging from 50 to 64 mL/min were selected for the experiments. The furnace temperature distribution along the axial distance, the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2,\;NOx,\;S0_2,$ flue gas temperature, and combustion efficiency were studied. The local furnace and flue gas temperatures decreased with an increase in air velocity. At injection pressures of 1.1 and 1.3 MPa the maximum furnace temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit, at an axial distance of 242 mm from the diffuser tip. The CO and $CO_2$ concentrations decreased with an increase in air velocity, but they increased with an increase in injection pressure. The effect of air velocity on NOx was not clearly seen at low injection pressures, but at injection pressure of 1.3 MPa it decreased with an increase in air velocity. The effect of air velocity $SO_2$ concentration level is not well understood. The combustion efficiency decreased with an increase in air velocity but it increased with an increase in injection pressure. It is recommended that injection pressure less than 0.9 MPa with air velocity not above 8.0 m/s would be suitable for this burner.
