전기화학반응을 수반한 유로채널 형상에 따른 마찰계수에 대한 연구 (Friction Factor in Micro Channel Flow with Electrochemical Reactions in Fuel Cell)

  • 주어진 연료전지면적에서 반응면적이 넓을수록 성능이 향상되는 연료전지는 좁은 폭의 채널을 여러 개 존재하게 하는 구조를 선호하지만 채널 폭이 좁아질수록 압력이 커지는 문제가 고려되어져야 한다. 그러나 현재 채널 구조에 따른 압력에 대한 연구는 많이 진행되어져 왔지만 대부분 반응을 고려하지 않았으며, 반응을 고려한 경우에 어떤 경향을 나타내는지 알아보는 것이 연료전지 유로설계에 있어 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서 화학반응을 고려한 평행류, 90도 밴드형, serpentine 세가지 종류의 유로채널를 가진 연료전지를 수치 해석하여 반응을 고려하지 않은 경우와 마찰계수(fRe), 속도, 압력강하를 비교하여 본 결과 parallel과 bend 형태의 채널은 반응을 고려한 경우 반응에 의한 밀도의 감소에 따라 근소하게 감소한 것을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 serpentine채널은 다공성매체인 확산층을 통해 인접한 채널로 가스가 이동하는 bypass flow 영향에 의하여 상대적으로 낮은 압력강하를 나타내는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • This study investigates the enhancement of the oxygen diffusion rate in the cathode channel of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by pure oscillating flow, which is the same as the mechanism of human breathe. Three-dimensional numerical simulation, which has the full model of the fuel cell including electrochemical reaction, ion and electronic conduction, mass transfer and thermal variation and so on, is performed to show the phenomena in the channel at the case of a steady state. This model could analysis the oscillating flow as a moving mesh calculation coupled with electrochemical reaction on the catalyst layer, however, it needs a lot of calculation time for each case. The two dimensional numerical simulation has carried on for the study of oscillating flow effect in the cathode channel of PEMFC in order to reduce the calculation time. This study shows the diffusion rate of the oxygen increased and the emission rate of the water vapor increased in the channel by oscillating flow without any forced flow.

  • To investigate the characteristics of water droplet on the gas diffusion layer from both upper-view and side-view of flow channel, a rig test apparatus was designed and fabricated with L-shape acryl plate in a $1mm{\times}1mm$ micro-channel. This experimental device is used to simulate the single droplet growth and its transport process under fuel cell operating condition. As a first step, we investigated the growth and transport of single water droplet with working temperature and air flow velocity. The contact angle and its hysteresis of water droplet at departing moment are measured and analyzed. It is expected that this study can provide the basic understanding of liquid water droplet behavior in gas flow channel and GDL interface during the PEM fuel cell operation.

분리판의 채널 높이에 따른 1 kWe 급 고체산화물 연료전지 스택 수치 해석 (Numerical Analysis in a 1 kWe SOFC Stack for Variation of the Channel Height in Separators)

  • In this study, the flow uniformity was analyzed by performing numerical analysis on the 1 kWe internal manifold type solid oxide fuel cell stack according to the channel height of the separator. Also, it was examined by varying the fuel utilization rate and oxygen utilization rate. From the calculation results, we found that as the channel height of the separator decreased, the pressure drop increased exponentially. In addition, it was found that as the channel height of the separator decreased, the gas flow resistance inside the unit cell increased, and the flow resistance increased the pressure drop, thereby improving the flow uniformity inside the stack. Finally, the calculation results showed that as the fuel and oxygen utilization increased, the flow uniformity also improved.

  • The effects of channel area on the performance of regenerative type fuel pump were numerically studied by commercial CFD code (ANSYS CFX-10). To examine the effects of channel area, the shapes of the side channel and blade were simplified. The channel area affected the flow characteristics of the internal recirculation flow between the side channel and the blade groove and also made a difference in the overall performance. These loss mechanism with circulation flow were adopted as a loss coefficient in the performance prediction program. The loss coefficient was newly derived from the results of calculations with different channel area, and compared with the experimental results in the reference paper and used to modify the performance prediction program. The circulation flow characteristics with different channel area, which is related with loss mechanism, were also discussed with the results of 3-dimensional flow calculations.

  • Proper water management is crucial for the efficient operation of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Especially, for automotive applications, A novel water management that can avoid both membrane dry-out and flooding is a very important task to achieve good performance and efficiency of PEM fuel cells. The aim of this study is to investigate the liquid water behavior on the gas diffusion layer (GDL) surface and in the cathode flow channel of a PEM unit fuel cell under flooding conditions. For this purpose, a transparent unit fuel cell is devised and fabricated by modifying the conventional PEM fuel cell design. The results of water droplet behavior under flooding conditions are mainly presented. The water distributions in the cathode flow channels with cell operating voltage are also compared and analyzed. Through this work, it is expected that the data obtained from this fundamental study can be effectively used to establish the basic water management strategy in terms of water removal from the flow channels in a PEM fuel cell stack.

  • Liquid water in flow channel is an important factor that limits the steady and transient performance of PEM fuel cells. A computational fluid dynamics study based on the volume-of-fluid (VOF) multi-phase model is conducted to understand the transport behavior of liquid water in flow channel. The liquid water transport in $180^{\circ}$ bends is investigated and the effect of chamfering is discussed. The effect of wall adhesion is also considered by varying the contact angle of channel surfaces. The result of this study is believed to provide a useful guideline for design optimization of flow patterns or channel configurations of PEM fuel cells.

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지의 성능은 매우 복잡한 물리 현상들에 의해 변화하게 된다. 반응면적이 25 $cm^2$인 5-pass, 4-turn 사행성 유동유로의 립 부분에 보조유동유로를 가지는 형상에 대하여 물관리 측면에서의 연료전지 성능을 수치해석을 통해 비교하였다. 보조유동유로를 추가함에 따라 촉매층 공급 대류의 유동 방향이 변경되어 유로 내부의 물 배출 특성을 향상시키는 결과를 나타내었다. 또한 입구에서의 공급기체를 보조유동유로로 분산시킴에 따라 입구에서의 전류 밀도는 낮아지며 보조유동유로로 이동하는 공급기체들은 주 유동유로의 내에서의 체류시간보다 길어져서 전체적인 전류밀도 분포가 균일해지는 것을 확인하였다.

  • PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) is a low temperature fuel cells which are high efficient and clean energy. But it has many problems like economical efficiency or durability. Because of this reason, many researchers challenge various view points. One of challenge is the flow channel design and many researchers develop new flow channel design. In addition to most of them have the anode and cathode's flow channel overlapped almost perfectly. In this case, the electrochemical reaction is almost done by the inertial force of flow. So we study on the effect of the anode and cathode's flow channel which aren't overlapped perfectly, have more diffusion effect, to PEMFC performance using CFD.

Design and Analysis of Spider Bionic Flow Field for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

  • Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a portable and clean power generation device. The structural arrangement of the flow field has a significant influence on the delivery efficiency of PEMFC. In this article, a new bionic flow channel is designed based on the inspiration of a spider shape. The branch channel width and branch corner are studied as the focus, and its simulation is carried out by the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results show that when channel width/rib width and corner of the branch are 1.5 and 130° , respectively, it is the best numerical combination and the cell comprehensive performance is excellent. The final model using this numerical combination is compared with the traditional flow channel model to verify the advancement of this scheme.
