  • This study was conducted to investigate plant growth characteristics and anatomical studies of Korean mistel (Viscum album var. coloratum (Kom.) Ohwi). Parasite position was upper part that has a plenty of sunshine area 5 to 10m apart from the ground, regardless host tree. Stem developed two branch stems from the each basal stem, leaf was grown from the end stems as opposite. Fruit has a light yellow color and berry size was 7 to 8 mm long diameter and it contains seed. Floral bud differentiation initiated with forming rounded dome and arch-shaped floral apex at the beginning stage, and produced heart-shaped sepal following the differentiation of leaf primordia. Floral bud formation processed centeral part first and following bilateral sides were developed in order. Leaf was thick and stoma and guard cell were observed from the two or three inner layers from the epidermis. Mistletoe penetrated cork cambium of host plant and was growing by rooting on xylem. Korean mistel connected to host plant through parasitic organ, haustorium structurally and physiologically.

  • The mushroom takes in charge of decomposer in ecosystem and its production is important indicator for sounded ecosystem function. To determine standing crop of basidiocarps(fruit body of mushroom), a weight must be measured by harvesting mushroom individual in the field. But this method has profound affection on the basidiocarps population or its surrounding condition due to habitat destruction. Thus, in this study, without harvesting any mushroom in the field, we developed allometric equation using some morphological parameters to estimate standing crop biomass of basidiocarps. Lentinula edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, Flammulina velutipes and Conocybe tenera were used for allometry. Morphological variables of the mushroom were pileus diameter, pileus area, stipe length and stipe thickness. Consequently, all the experimental mushrooms species showed significantly correlation in biomass estimation of basidiocarps from allometric equation (p<0.05). As a result of this research, the standing biomass of the basidiocarps could be indirectly estimated with proportional expression, allometric equation drived from morphological characters.

  • The authors diagnosed a 33 years old female as benign lymphoepithelial lesion after undergoing clinical, radiological and histopathological examinations and the characteristics were as follows : 1. Clinically, the patient complained of painless bilateral swelling of the parotid glands and dryness of the palate. Rheumatoid factor was detected in her serum. 2. Sialograms showed punctate or globular collections of contrast media distributed evenly throughout the parotid glands in so-called 'cherry blossom' or 'leafless fruit-laden tree' appearance. 3. A salivary gland scan showed no uptake of radioisotopes by the parotid glands. 4. At Tl-weighted imaging of PNS MRI, the lesions had the same signal intensity as the rest of the gland. At TI-weighted imaging, the lesions could be seen as high signal intensity 1.3 cm and 2.1 cm in diameter in the left and the right parotid gland respectively. 5. Ultrasonogram showed sonolucent lesions 20×15mm and 17×14mm in size in the lower part of the left parotid gland and another 18×11mm in size in the lower part of the parotid gland as well as many other small sonolucent lesions. 6. Histopathologically, lymphocytic infiltration replacing the normal acini and lymphoid follicles containing germinal centers could be seen. Epimyoepithelial islands were scattered throughout the lesion and benign lymphoepithelial cysts were also observed.

  • Varietal distances were measured by Mahalanobis's $D^2$ statistics in 190 possible comparisons among twenty varieties of Prunus mume with twelve characters such as seed weight, length, width, and diameter, fruit weight, and number of sepals, petals, pistils, and stigmas, and leaf length and width. A complete linkage cluster analysis based on the Mahalanobis's distance ($D^2$) was attempt. Twenty varieties of Prunus mume were largely classified into five subgroups. Group I, II, III, IV and V included two, four, five, five and four varieties, respectively. Most of the varietal groups were not associated with their geographical origins. Number of stigmas, and leaf length and width among the twelve characters were the largest contributors to the $D^2$ in both intra-and inter groups.

  • This study was carried out to investigate appropriate processing conditions for expanded rice hulls to be used as a medium material in nutrient cultures. The water holding capacity of expanded rice hulls produced by using a domestic grinder with 8 mm gap and 3 mm cutter height was 271.0, and the bulk density and CEC were 0.19g·m-3 and 37.0 cmol·kg-1, respectively. These values are higher than those of perilte. However, geometric mean diameter (GMD) of expanded rice hulls was 1.01mm which was smaller than that of perlite, indicating unfavorable porosity. After supplying nutrient solution, the faster water percolation in expanded rice than perlite required more frequent water supply. There was no significant difference in tomato fruit yield between expanded rice hull and perlite. The pH increase and the lack of nitrogen in early stage of culture are to be solved in the future.

  • In this study, we investigated the influences of abnormal high temperature on growth, yield and physiologically active substances of the strawberry. General strawberry cultivars in the $20^{\circ}C$ growth condition showed much better growth of leaf number, length, diameter along with plant height, compared with those in $22.5^{\circ}C$ or $25^{\circ}C$. But the cultivars of both 'Sulhyang' and 'Mehyang' showed good growth and development at $25^{\circ}C$ with the roots showing great growth at $20^{\circ}C$. The quality and yield of the strawberry were best in the $20^{\circ}C$ growth condition, but the merchantability deteriorated in the $25^{\circ}C$ high temperature condition. As for the content of the physiologically active substances of the strawberry, it increased at $20^{\circ}C$, the optimum growth temperature, but decreased at $25^{\circ}C$. The physiologically active substances in the strawberry differed among the cultivars, the contents of cyanidin-3-glucoside, cinchonine, ellagic acid and cinnamic acid higher in the 'Mehyang', whereas the content of fisetin is higher in the 'Sulhyang' cultivar.Consequentially, the high temperature in summer has a negative effect on the physiological active ingredients of the strawberry, which was increased in the strawberry cultivated at proper temperature, and high quality strawberry production was possible.

  • This experiment was undertaken in order to clarify effect of NO$_3$-N/NH$_4$-N ratios(NO$_3$/NH$_4$ : 10:0, 8:2) in the nutrient solution on growth, yield, photosynthetic rate, relative concentration of chlorophyll and root activity of hydroponically grown pepper plants at three different root- zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and root were no effect in by three root- zone temperatures. However, leaf number, stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of leaf and stem, dry weight of root at 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ increased when NH$_4$-N was added to the solution. Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, fruit length were longer by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Fruit number and yield increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N at three root-zone temperatures. Photosynthetic rate decreased as root - zone temperature increased. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, photosynthetic rate increased significantly by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Chlorophyll content of plants increased at 22$^{\circ}C$. Under root-zone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, chlorophyll content of plants increased by the addition of NH$_4$-N. Root activity of increased at 26$^{\circ}C$ Under root-Bone temperatures of 18$^{\circ}C$, 22$^{\circ}C$ and 26$^{\circ}C$ condition, root activity increased by the addition of NH$_4$- N.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the effect of supplemental lighting on stable productivity of paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) during low radiation period of winter season. The supplemental lighting sources used in this research were high pressure sodium (HPS) and lighting emitting plasma (LEP). Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) emitted from both lamps decreased as vertical distance from lamp increased. The PPFD of LEP lamps were twice more than that of the HPS lamp per unit distance, but the rate of decreased PPFD of t he LEP per unit distance was higher than that of HPS lamp. And different degrees of PPFD between HPS and LEP lamps by horizontal distance had a smaller degree of difference than by vertical distance at the 100 cm away point. As daily average PPFD measured at the top of the plant under the supplemental lighting during January, the supplemental lighting significantly increased radiation. Radiation of HPS and LEP lighting was 137% and 315% higher than control (without supplemental lighting = sunlight). Air temperature in the top of the plant was not significant different among treatments. HPS and LEP lighting had no effect on increase of flower settings. Leaf length and width with LEP lighting was the longest, photosynthetic was higher than those of other treatments. Supplemental lighting treatments significant increased fruit length and diameter. Especially LEP lighting treatment had a greater effect on fruit length and diameter. In conclusion, LEP lighting treatment during low radiation period greatly affected growth and production of paprika. Further research will be required for the suitable application of LEP lighting in paprika production.

  • Well-feathered (5.2 feathers, stem diameter 13 mm) trees of 'Fuji' apple/ M.9 EMLA were planted at $4.0{\tiems}1.5$ m and whip trees (stem diameter 10 mm) of 'Fuji'/M.26 at $4.0{\times}2.0$ m were trained to the slender spindle. The productivity and yield efficiency of two orchard systems were compared for 6 years. The canopy volume of the tree/M.9 EMLA reached $2.07m^3$ in 2nd year and increased slowly to almost the targeted tree volume of $2.9m^3$ in 4th year. Trees/M.26 grew slowly at the begin but from 3rd year the tree volume expanded quickly to reach $5.6m^3$ in 5th year, covering over the allowed space. Yield of M.9 EMLA per 10a increased from 0.3 ton in 2nd year to 4.6 ton in 5th year, and 5.0 ton in 6th year, but yield of M.26 per 10a increased from 0.5 ton in 3rd to 2.9 ton in 6th year. Cumulative yield per 10a up to 6th year was 13.9 ton for M.9 EMLA but only 9.8 ton for M.26. Fruit weight for M.9 EMLA was heavier than that for M.26. In conclusion, the high density planting system with well-feathered trees/M.9 EMLA was better than the conventional wide planting system with whip trees/M.26.
