This study was carried out to investigate the status of spot damage by fruit piercing pests and the kinds of these pests on yuzu (Citrus junos) fruit in Koheung, the most chief producing district of yuzu fruit in Korea, from ’97 to ’99. The extent of spot damage by fruit piercing pests on yuzu was increasing in recent years. This damage of fruits was severe in the lower canopy than the high one from ground and intercropping groves between yuzu trees had a greater damage to compare with single cropping of yuzu. Spot damage of yuzu fruit was occurred mainly from late September to early November when yuzu fruit is enlarging and coloring yellow. The blackish concave spot on yuzu fruit surface was appeared in 3 days after introduction of Riptortus clavatus into a netted cage containing one yuzu fruit and the diameters of this spot was 8.3 mm. At 10 days after introduction, this spot changed into milky-white with 9.2 mm diameters. One concave spot has contained oil cells by 17.7 and its external appearances has unchanged until harvest. The kinds of piercing pests of yuzu fruit were investigated with 3 orders, 16 families and 37 species. These pests were classified by 11 species of bugs, 5 species of hoppers and 21 species of moths. Among them, dominant species were Physopelta gutta, Halyamorpha halys, Empoasca vitis, Aedia leucomelas, Agrotis tokionis, etc. Macroglossum bombylans and Acherontia s쇼x are newly confirmed species as the fruit piercing moths in Korea.
This study was conducted to compare differences in fruit quality by harvest time of 'Fuji' apple fruit that was frozen on tree by unusual low temperature in that air temperature was under $-3.5^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours. Fruits were harvested at 1 day before, and 2 days and 6 days after freezing damage, respectively. Harvest's soluble solid contents in all treatments was over $14^{\circ}Bx$. Firmness and titratable acidity of fruit harvested after freezing damage was lower than those of fruit harvested before freezing damage. During cold storage, ethylene production of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction in the level of fruit quality during cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was more serious than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction of fruit quality during subsequent ambient temperature for 1 week after cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. In comparison of treatments that were harvested at different times after freezing damage, ethylene production and reduction in the level of fruit quality until 8 weeks of cold storage of fruit harvested at 6 days after freezing damage was lower than that of fruit harvested at 2 days after freezing damage. However, this difference by harvest time after freezing damage disappeared after 8 weeks of cold storage. Incidence of flesh browning was not affected by freezing at air temperature under $-3.5^{\circ}C$ for 7 hours.
This study was conducted to investigate the fruit damage according to the number of released stink bugs and date of adult introduced on non-astringent persimmon. The fruit damage differed significantly by the number, date, and the source of feed for Riptortus clavatus. Damages on the fruits appeared when five bugs were released to mother branches bearing fruits. Damages to the fruits was heavy in the case that bugs were introduced in September and October, compared with in June, July and August. Persimmon fruit damage was influenced significantly by the available sources to R. clavatus, persimmon fruit alone or additional supply of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and water. Characteristic damage symptoms by R. clavatus showed only scars on the fruit skin, without fruit dropping. Halyomorpha halys (=mista) showed significantly higher fruit damage when they were released in July, August, and September compared with other periods. Number of H. halys to the fruit also showed significant differences in fruit damages. Five H. halys in July showed 100% damaged fruits. The fruit damage by Plautia stali was not significantly different according to dates of introduction but the number of insects gave significant differences in the fruit damage ratio at the level of 1, 3, 5 bugs introduced to the mother branche bearing friuts. The damage symptoms by P. stali was fruit dropping in July and August but from September damaged fruits were found in the branches.
This survey was conducted from 1992 to 2005 in the major apple producing districts in southern part of South Korea including $4{\sim}8$ cities, to know the occurrence and damage level of two major pests, Carposina sasakii and Grapholita molesta that attack apple fruit. The fruit damage by G. molesta during the harvest period ranged from 0.02 to 1.64%. A tendency of higher damage of G. molesta was observed after 1997 compared with the previous years. The other hand, the fruit damage by C. sasakii was 0.02 to 1.30%, and the damage level was very low with fruit damage of < 0.3% except 1998. The orchard infested with G. molesta was 13 to 71 %, while 12 to 57% with C. sasakii. The rates of orchards where fruit damage by G. molesta was found were higher than those by C. sasakii after 1997. The tendency of fruit damage rates in the orchard where the most fruit damage was found was same with the trend of orchard rates infested with the pests. The maximum damage rate by G. molesta was 20.0% in 2005, while 4.5% by C. sasakii in 1998. The damaged shoot rates by the first generation G. molesta was $0.1{\sim}8.1%$, and it had a positive correlation with the rates of fruit damage during the harvest period. Consequently, it is concluded that G. molesta is dominant species compared with C. sasakii in commercial apple orchards recently.
In this paper, a Cloud Model based Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (CMFOA) is presented for structural damage identification, which is a global optimization algorithm inspired by the foraging behavior of fruit fly swarm. It is assumed that damage only leads to the decrease in elementary stiffness. The differences on time-domain structural acceleration data are used to construct the objective function, which transforms the damaged identification problem of a structure into an optimization problem. The effectiveness, efficiency and accuracy of the CMFOA are demonstrated by two different numerical simulation structures, including a simply supported beam and a cantilevered plate. Numerical results show that the CMFOA has a better capacity for structural damage identification than the basic Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) and the CMFOA is not sensitive to measurement noise.
In this paper, the Multi-Swarm Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (MFOA) is presented for structural damage identification using the first several natural frequencies and mode shapes. We assume damage only leads to the decrease of element stiffness. The differences on natural frequencies and mode shapes of damaged and intact state of a structure are used to establish the objective function, which transforms a damage identification problem into an optimization problem. The effectiveness and accuracy of MFOA are demonstrated by three different structures. Numerical results show that the MFOA has a better capacity for structural damage identification than the original Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) does.
Camellia sinensis, Green tea, contains phenolic compounds that act to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as catechin, epicatechin, etc. In contrast with the tea leaf, the bioactivity of its fruit and the fruit peels remains still unclear. This study focused on the effects of fruit and fruit peels of C. sinensis (FC and PC) against oxidative DNA damage in NIH/3T3 cells. The scavenging effects of FC and PC on ROS were assessed using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl or 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radicals. The measurement of ROS in cellular levels was conducted by DCFDA reagent and the protein expression of γ-H2AX, H2AX, cleaved caspase-3, p53, and, p-p53 was analyzed by immunoblotting. The gene expressions of p53 and H2AX were assessed using polymerase chain reaction techniques. The major metabolites of FC and PC were quantitatively measured analyzed and the amounts of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in PC were greater than those in FC. Further, PC suppressed ROS production, which protects the oxidative stress-induced DNA damage through reducing H2AX, p53, and caspase-3 phosphorylation. These results refer that the protective effects of FC and PC are mediated by inhibition of p53 signaling pathways, probably via the bioactivity of phenolic compounds. Thus, FC and PC can serve as a potential antioxidant in DNA damage-associated diseases.

In order to estimate the damage of orchards due' to natural disasters such as typhoon, severe rain, freezing or frost, it is necessary to estimate the number of fruit bearing before and after the damage. To estimate the fruit bearing after the damages are easily done by delegations, but it cost too high to survey every insured farm household and calculate the fruit bearing before the damage. In this article, we suggest to use a random coefficient model to predict the numbers of fruit bearing in the orchards before the damage based on the tree age and the area information.
We have analyzed the effect of planting site (elevation) and direction of fruiting on the frost damage (tolerance to transparent skin and blemishes) of persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb) 'Fuyu' fruit subjected to the early fall frost (November 2, 2012) in environment-friendly orchards of Changnyeong and Changwon (Gyeongsangnam-do Korea). In Changnyeong, the direction of fruiting showed a significant effect on the fruit weight and the fruit width (p<0.01), and the fruit firmness (p<0.05) while the planting site (elevation) did a highly significant effect on the fruit width and the frost damage (p<0.01), and fruit length (p<0.05). In particular, severe frost damage of fruit (15.2%) and leaves (about 90%) was observed in the plants located in the low elevation area of orchard. The damaged fruit had an transparent skin color and/or blemishes. In Changwon, there was no effect of the planting site and the direction of fruiting on the frost damage, and the fruit characteristics except the fruit width having been related to the planting site (p<0.05). So, the main effects for the fruit frost damage was a terrain factor around the orchards.
The alkaline comet assay has been used with increasing popularity to investigate the level of DNA damage in biomonitoring studies within the last decade in Western countries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the alkaline comet assay as a biomarker of oxidative DNA damage for monitoring in the Korean population, and also to evaluate the effect of nutritional status and lifestyle factors on H2O2 induced oxidative DNA damage measured by the alkaline comet assay in human lymphocytes. The study population consisted of 61 healthy Korean male volunteers, aged 20-28. Epidemiological background data including dietary habits, smoking habits and anthropometrical measurements were collected through personal interviews. After blood collection, the comet assay in peripheral lymphocytes and plasma lipids analysis was carried out and the results analyzed. Tail moment (TM) and tail length (TL) of the comet assay were use\ulcorner to measure DNA damage in the lymphocytes of the subjects. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) positive correlations were observed between DNA damage (TM or TL) and smoking habits expressed as cigarettes smoked per day and pack years (r = 0.311 and 0.382 for TM, r = 0.294 and 0.350 for TL, respectively). There were also significant positive correlations between DNA damage parameter and waist-hip ratio. Higher plasma triglyceride levels were associated with increased damage to DNA. There were no correlations between the consumption frequencies of vegetables and DNA damage to the subjects. However, consumption frequencies of fruit and fruit juice intake were inversely associated with the TM and TL. The results indicate that die comet assay is a simple, rapid and sensitive method for detecting lymphocyte DNA damage induced by cigarette smoking. Consumption of fruit or fruit juices could potentiall modify the damaged DNA in the human peripheral lymphocytes of young Korean men.
