An Experimental Study on Strength Properties of Concrete Using Blast-Furnace Slag Subjected to Freezing at Early Age (초기재령에서 동결을 받은 고로슬래그 콘크리트의 강도발현특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, to consider financial and constructive aspect usage of Admixture such as Blast-Furnace Slag and Fly-Ash, are increased. Also the use of cold-weather-concrete is increased. Blast-Furnace Slag, a by-product of steel industry, have many advantage to reduce the heat of hydration, increase in ultimate strength and etc. But it also reduces early-age strength, so it is prevented from using of Blast-Furnace Slag at cold-weather-concrete. In this study, for the purpose of increasing usage of Blast-Furnace Slag at cold-weather-concrete, it is investigated the strength properties of concrete subjected to frost damage for the cause of early age curing. The factors of this experience to give early frost damaged were Freezing temperature(-1, -10, $-15^{\circ}C$), Early curing age(0, 12, 24, 48hour), Freezing times(0, 12, 24, 48hour). According to this study, if early curing is carried out before haying frost damage, the strength of concrete used admixture, subjected to frost damage, is recovered. And that properties are considered, the effect of using admixture like blast-furnace-slag, is very high

Effect of Fiber Hybridization on Durability Related Properties of Ultra-High Performance Concrete

  • The purpose of the paper is to determine the influence of two widely used steel fibers and polypropylene fibers on the sulphate crystallization resistance, freeze-thaw resistance and surface wettability of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Tests were carried out on cubes and cylinders of plain UHPC and fiber reinforced UHPC with varying contents ranging from 0.25 to 1% steel fibers and/or polypropylene fibers. Extensive data from the salt resistance test, frost resistance test, dynamic modulus of elasticity test before and after freezing-thawing, as well as the contact angle test were recorded and analyzed. Fiber hybridization relatively increased the resistance to salt crystallization and freeze-thaw resistance of UHPC in comparison with a single type of fiber in UHPC at the same fiber volume fraction. The experimental results indicate that hybrid fibers can significantly improve the adhesion properties and reduce the wettability of the UHPC surface.

  • Korea is considered to be a seasonal frozen soil area that thaws in the spring, and freezes in winter. In the current design codes for anti-freezing layer, the thickness of anti-freezing layer is calculated by the depth frozen due to the temperature condition. Therefore, there is a tendency of over-design and applying uniform thickness without the consideration of thermal stability, bearing capacity and frost susceptibility of materials. So, it is essential to study the structural appropriateness of pavement layer and bearing capacity besides the seasonal and mechanical properties of pavement materials to take an appropriate and reasonable design of the road structure. In this paper, the evaluation of frost susceptibility on subgrade, ant-freezing layer, subbase was conducted by means of the mechanical characteristics and model experiment. The temperature, heaving amount, unfrozen water contents and freezing depth of soil samples, the subgrade, anti-freezing layer, subbase soils of road construction site were measured to determine the frost susceptibility.

  • The influence of fines of the frost susceptibility of subgrade soils were established by laboratory freezing system test simulating closely the thermal conditions in the field. During the winter season, the climate is heavily influenced by the cold and dry continental high pressure. Because of siberian air mass, the temperature of January is $-6{\sim}-7^{\circ}C$ on average. This chilly weather generate the frost heaving by freezing the moisture of soil and damage potential of the road structure. In the freezing soil, the ice lenses increase the freeze portion of soil by absorbing the ground water with capillary action. However, the capillary characteristics differ from the sort of soil on the state of freezing condition. In the current design codes for anti-freezing layer, the thickness of anti freezing layer is calculated by freezing depth against the temperature condition. Temperature Properties of Vertical Reinforcements in Wall Structures in Relation to the Different Methods of Bubble Sheet Installation in Winter (겨울철 버블시트 포설방법 변화에 따른 벽식구조 수직철근의 온도 특성)

  • This study aims to analyze the properties of the temperature change in vertical reinforcements in outdoor wall structures in winter in relation to the different methods of bubble sheet installation, and to subsequently determine the possibility of initial frost damage to the concrete as a result of low temperature. As for the experimental variables, double bubble sheets were used as curing materials, and the curing method was to model the part where the slab and the wall intersect and the rebar is exposed, and to measure the change of temperature around the exposed rebar in accordance with the change of the coating curing. It was found that by employing curing method B, which is to install the bubble sheet between the vertical reinforcements, the most vulnerable area, which is 50mm below(④) the surface of the concrete, would be lowered to sub-zero temperature 20 hours later than when using curing method A, and that therefore it is more effective to install the bubble sheet between the vertical reinforcements for the prevention of initial frost damage.

Scaling Resistance of Cement Concrete Incorporating Mineral Admixtures (광물질혼화재를 적용한 콘크리트의 스케일링 저항성 평가)

  • PURPOSES: The scaling of a concrete surface caused by the combined effects of frost and de-icing salts is one of the main reasons for the need to repair transportation infrastructures in cold-climate regions. This study describes the results of attempts to determine the scaling resistance of concrete incorporating mineral admixtures such as fly ash, GGBFS, and silica fume, and subjected to the actions of frost and salt. METHODS : Conventionally, to evaluate the fundamental properties of concrete, flexural and compressive strength measurements are regularly performed. Based on the ASTM C 672 standard, concrete is subjected to 2%, 4%, and 8% $CaCl_2$ salt solutions along with repeated sets of 50 freeze/thaw cycles, and the scaling resistance was evaluated based on the mass of the scale and a visual examination. RESULTS : It was observed that silica fume is very effective in enhancing the scaling resistance of concrete. Meanwhile, concrete incorporating GGBFS exhibited poor resistance to scaling, especially in the first ten freeze/thaw cycles. However, fly ash concrete generally exhibited the maximum amount of damage as a result of the frost-salt attack, regardless of the concentrations of the solutions. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the scaling resistance of concrete is highly dependent on the type of the mineral admixture used in the concrete. Therefore, to provide a durable concrete pavement for use in cold-climate regions, the selection of a suitable binder is essential.

  • When the ground temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$, wet soils expand due to the ice formation in their porous space. This results in frost heave which causes structural stability problems. Frost heave is attributed by several factors such as physical soil properties and heat transfer including pore water phase change. Due to the complex physical phenomena, reliable and verified multi-dimensional numerical models for frost heave problems are still in a research stage. This study presents an efficient and simple method of overcoming numerical problems associated with sudden jump of heat capacity due to the phase change from water to ice in the pore space. This paper proposes heat transfer equation and finite element method when the saturated soils or porous rocks are subjected to freezing. Numerical analyses using the proposed method agree well with the known closed form solution and the laboratory test results.

  • The accumulated displacements and fatigues of rock are increased by the stress-hysteresis, induced from repeated frost-thawing. Also the shear strength is decreased by them continuously. The stress-hysteresis is affected by the atmospheric temperature changes, whose behavior is visco-elasticity, usually. Therefore, to do ideal body analysis, Kelvin model could be used to analyze the frost-thawing behavior in winter. In general, rock slope failure occurs by the deterioration of rocks, which is caused by the repetition of freezing-thawing process. In order to keep the safety of such rock mass structures the deterioration process of rock needs to be described quantitatively using some meaningful parameters. In this work, the deterioration process in freezing-thawing cycle of tuff, which is a famous soft porous rock, is investigated through laboratory tests and successfully described as a differential equation for the change of porosity. And then, the deterioration of the mechanical properties of rock, such as Young's modulus and uniaxial compressive strength, are quantitatively described as a function of the porosity.

In this study, for the purpose of increasing usage of mineral admixtures, like Blast-Furnace Slag and Fly ash, it is investigated the strength properties of concrete subjected to under low temperature According to this study, if early curing is carried out before having frost damage, the strength of concrete, subjected to frost damage, is recovered. And to consider increasing effect of strength, it is more effective to use of mineral admixtures, especially to use blast furance slag.

ALC 의 내구성 및 물성개선에 관한 연구

  • The effect of particle size of Al powder, water repellent agent and finishing agent on frost resistance, absorption ratio and structure of micropore was examined to improve the physical properties and durability of ALC. According as the amount added of water repellent agent was increased, frost resistance was improved and absorption ratio was decreased. From one side freezing /thaw test, finishing agent which has a low vapor permeation located the crack at close indoor point of ALC specimen. ALC produced from fine Al powder has a low volume reduction by scalling and a sound appearance after freezing/thawing test and top surface freezing test, The crystal of tobermorite in ALC matrix was converted to calcium carbonate by carbonation which was accelerated with the decreasing of water content. Since the micropore of ALC was filled up by calcium carbonate, void ratio was reduced and crack was detected after complete carbonation.
