  • When the ground temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$, wet soils expand due to the ice formation in their porous space. This results in frost heave which causes structural stability problems. Frost heave is attributed by several factors such as physical soil properties and heat transfer including pore water phase change. Due to the complex physical phenomena, reliable and verified multi-dimensional numerical models for frost heave problems are still in a research stage. This study presents an efficient and simple method of overcoming numerical problems associated with sudden jump of heat capacity due to the phase change from water to ice in the pore space. This paper proposes heat transfer equation and finite element method when the saturated soils or porous rocks are subjected to freezing. Numerical analyses using the proposed method agree well with the known closed form solution and the laboratory test results.

  • The aggregate out of waste polyethylene was made in order to recycle waste polyethylene wasted in the country side. Many physical and mechanical experiments which include leaching test, specific gravity test, compaction test, LA abrasion test, large-scaled shear test, and permeability test were performed for the waste polyethylene aggregate. The thermal conductivity test, unfrozen water content test and frost heave test were also performed. The temperature distribution for both gravels and waste polyethylene aggregate, which were constructed in the frost heave layer in the field, was measured in winter season of continuous 2 years and compared.

  • Korea has seasonal weathers which result in the frosting of soil in winter times, and the thawing of soil in spring. These climate characteristics result in the damaging of pavements, due to the repeated freezing and thawing of road pavements during winter and spring. In order to reduce these pavement damages, anti-frost heave layers are being specially installed, however it is being applied based on foreign researches, and therefore result in the waste of national budget. With this study, a database system was constructed for effective management and monitoring of measured temperatures and function data of 2 meters below the embankment, cut slope, and the cutting-embankment boundary, which are 15 regions picked by the frost index diagram. As the study result, an effective storage and management-purpose database was established for easy data searching and downloading for the pavement design engineers.

  • Gangwon Province, located in the northeastern part of South Korea, is the coldest area in South Korea with 90% of the total area as mountainous. Therefore, tunnel damage has been reported continuously in winter. But there has been lack of researches on frost heave occurring behind tunnel lining. In this study, numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the frost depth in road tunnel constructed in Gangwon province. Based on the database on road tunnel and weather in Gangwon province, a standard tunnel shape and geotechnical properties of ground was determined. And then thermal analysis for the frost depth according to the temperature change and ground conditions were conducted. Analysis result showed that the sensitivity to frost heave of metamorphic rock and sedimentary rock is higher than sand. Lower initial ground temperature leads to deeper frost depth and consequently increases frost damage. In addition, lining thickness, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity also affect greatly on the variation of frost depth.

  • In this research, the frost heave mechanism of the weathered tuff soil sampled from the area tying between Ulanbator and Beijing was studied. The frost heave tests were carried maintaining the constant temperature at both upper$(+5^{\circ}C)\; and\; lower(-5^{\circ}C)$ ends of the sample. Here, main emphasis is given on variation of the freezing point depression with the variation of applied overburden pressure. The expansion of ice lens and migration of the pore water towards freezing front were observed in the test. It was found that with the increase in overburden pressure there is decrease in heave rate and increase in the absolute value of a segregation-freezing temperature. Hence the equation between segregation-freezing temperature and overburden pressure could be suggested. Also the water content of the samples at the frozen side was shown to be higher than those at the unfrozen side. Similarly, the water at warmer part of the frozen tuff was found much higher than that of the cooler part.

  • As a part of several Eurasian initiatives, the Korean government is trying to reconnect railways through North Korea to the Asian continent. If South Korea could build a network using railway, it would be a chance to develop a robust economic environment and to motivate economic growth. In the railway reconnection project between North and South Korea, the most important part of the railway roadbed sector is repair or improvement, and then construction of a new line through North Korea. There are not many big differences in the geological conditions; however, climate condition varies greatly during winter. The most significant condition in the safety of railway operation is frost-heaving. However, since South Korea has a relatively mild climate condition compared with North Korea, design and construction specifications under severe weather conditions in winter have not been prepared. This study proposes a plan for revising the railway design standard for underpass structures through an analysis of international standards, leading to site construction to prevent frost-heave.

  • The frost depth(frost penetration) is used to install anti-frost heave layers in pavement designs. The freezing index is calculated by an annual accumulated value of multiplying the period of time with temperatures below zero, and the corresponding temperature. Therefore, the DAAT(daily average air temperature) calculation method may play an effect on the FI(freezing index). The Weather Observatory used to supply 4 average air temperatures per day, but currently supplies 8 per day. With this study, we divided the southern part(below FI=$350^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$) of the Korean peninsula into 6 areas according to site conditions(low embankment, embankment-cutting slope, and the cutting slope) and established a field measurement system for 15 positions to check the effects on the result of FI according to differing DAAT calculation methods. The air temperatures obtained by the field measurement system was used to calculate and compare the FI. As a result, the freezing index calculated based on the $DAAT_4(T_4)$ is normally greater by 3% than the one on $DAAT_8(T_8)$. In addition, the calibration equation for the freezing index using air temperatures was proposed through the research.

  • Seasonal frozen ground affects structural behavior in South Korea. Frost and heaving of seasonal frozen ground results in the critical damage of roadway, railroad, and buried pipeline. It has been widely used to substitute frost susceptible soils with granular soils. This paper presents experimental investigation on the effectiveness of soil-shredded tire and soil-expanded polystylene (EPS) mixtures to reduce frost depth and force around a buried pipeline. Experimental data such as measured temperature profile and the deformation of buried pipeline were carefully observed and provide the evidence of the effectiveness of soil mixtures.

  • Damage due to frost action in pavement structure system is creating either frost heave or stiffness-weakening of subgrade soil follow melting. The formation of ice lenses requires a frost-susceptible soil, freezing temperatures, and continuous water supply. Eliminating one of these conditions suffices to significantly reduce the intensity of frost action. It is important to know characteristics of subgrade soil in frost susceptibility or decide degree of freezing permission. Also, study on the stiffness variation of subgrade soil during freezing and thawing cycle is very important. In this study, Impact resonance test for subgrade soil at freezing and thawing confirms that is applied for.
