When segmenting consumers according to their fashion adoption behavior, it has been assumed that consumers' fashion conformity and innovativeness characteritics are negatively correlated. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between conformity and innovativeness and that these two attributes exist independently. The research problems of this study were to segment consumers according to the degrees of conformity and innovativeness, and to identify differences in reference groups and clothing purchasing behavior among the segments. The results of the empirical study showed that the fashion conformity and innovativeness were in and innovativeness; High conformity/High innovativeness group(HC/HI), High conformity/Low innovativeness group (HC/LI), Low conformity/High innovativeness group(LC/HI?, and Low conformity/Low innovativeness group (LC/LI). When the groups were compared in their reference groups and purchasing behavior, it was found out that HC groups were more influenced by reference groups than LC groups. When HC/LI and HC/HI groups were compared, HC/LI group was more influenced by their parents and siblings, while HC/HI group was more influenced by upper class and celebrities. Both groups were mostly influenced by friends and desirable passengers on the street. Friends and passengers were most influential to LC groups also, even though they were less influenced than HC groups. In conclusion, the fashion conformity and innovativeness were found to exist in different dimensions consisting dual structure. Thus, retailers and marketers can make their strategies more successfully if they use these two characteristics separately when segmenting consumers.
Obesity in children is a major concern of public health. This study was performed to illuminate its effect on weight control program and the associated factors of obesity-related habits and obesity index in primary school obese children. Weight control program consisted of behavioral modification, nutrition education and exercise during 17 weeks. The sample consisted of treatment group(n=42) and control group(n=41). There was no statistical difference between the two groups in obesity index, socioeconomic status and grade. To assess the effects of weight control program, the subjects were given pre-test and post-test such as the measurement of anthropometric values and self-reporting questionnaire. This result of this study were as follows; 1. After weight control program was applied, there was a significant decrease in obesity index among the treatment group. Obesity-related habits score of the treatment group increased significantly, While there was not much difference between the pre-test and the post-test among the control group. But exercise habit didn't increase significantly in the both groups. 2. Correlation between obesity-related habits and obesity index were not evident. 3. After application of weight control program, the factors associated with change of eating habit were children's past experience of weight control, motivational change toward weight control program and friends' support for treatment group. The factors associated with change of exercise habit were post-test motivation score and friends' support. Motivational change toward weight control and pre-test self-efficacy of exercise behavior were counter-related to exercise habit. For change of other obesity-related habits, initial obesity index, motivational change, post-test self-efficacy score of exercise behavior and paternal educational status were closely associated. But post-test self-efficacy score of eating behavior was unrelated. 4. Only the factor of experience of weight control was associated with change of obesity index. 5. For the both groups, the factors associated with change of eating habits were post-test self-efficacy of eating behavior and family's support. The factors associated with change of exercise behavior were self-efficacy changes of exercise behavior and friends' support. The factors associated with change of other obesity-related habits were self-efficacy change of eating behavior. Initial obesity index was associated with change of obesity index. 6. The rate of dropouts from weight control program was 28.6% (12/42) in treatment group. Initial obesity index, other obesity-related habits except eating exercise habits, friend's support were associated with dropout. In conclusion, these results indicated that weight control program in primary school settings was effective. Direct exercise regimen and practice was demanded. In addition to the program itself, much of the success is dependent on the degree of motivation of the children involved and support provided by their parents and friends. Further study need to be performed under the condition that the weight control progrom is applied for a longer period.
The purpose of this study is to offer information needed in developing mental health service programs which can help mental patients to improve their self-esteem. For that purpose, the difference and the interrelation between mental patients' characteristics, and their self-esteem, group consciousness and consciousness of right were examined. And also, in practice, I observed 374 patients suffering from mental problem, who live in Busan and in Kyeong Nam province. As the result, the several facts which could be got from this theoretical examination and practical observation are as follows: First, it is shown that what is meaningfully related to mental patients' self-esteem are their educational level, the families' monthly earnings, a feeling of satisfaction to family relationship, the time spending together with their friends, or a feeling of satisfaction to their friends Second, it is appeared that there was a significant interaction between group consciousness of mental patients, and whether they have got married and the time spending together with their friends. Third, it is found out that their feeling of satisfaction to family relationship and the time spending together with their friends have meaningful relation to consciousness of right which mental patients have. Finally, speaking of interaction among self-esteem, group consciousness and consciousness of right, it is understood that self-esteem has significant effect of group consciousness, and that group consciousness has confidential effect on consciousness of right.
Purpose: Based on the health belief model and theory of planned behavior, this study investigated how age group (adolescence and emerging adulthood) moderated the relative effects of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and subjective norms on preventive behavior against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: This secondary data analysis utilized data from adolescents (n=272) and emerging adults (n=239). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to test the moderating effect of age group on the relationships among variables. Results: Higher perceived susceptibility (β=.21, p<.001), perceived severity (β=.14, p=.002), subjective norms (friends) (β=.26, p<.001), subjective norms (parents) (β=.44, p<.001), and subjective norms (schools) (β=.28, p<.001) enhanced COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Moderated regression analysis showed that subjective norms (friends and school) impacted preventive behavior in adolescents more than in emerging adults. Conclusion: Given the need to increase perceived susceptibility and severity among adolescents and emerging adults, these findings provide baseline data for designing effective COVID-19 prevention interventions that consider the developmental characteristics of different age groups. Interventions by health centers at universities can strengthen COVID-19 preventive behavior among emerging adults. As adolescents are influenced by friends, their peer roles must be strengthened to enhance adherence to COVID-19 preventive guidelines.
The purpose of this study is to determine the variables affecting adolescents' conformity behavior in bullying. The study subjects were 753 middle school and high school students. The data were analyzed using Chi-Square, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression analysis. The major findings are as follows. 1. The variables affecting bully-conformity behavior were sympathy, close friends to confide in, anxiety, social skills, and family harmony. The variables affecting victim-conformity behavior were social skills, sex, attitude toward school atmosphere, anxiety, and sympathy. The variables affecting onlooker behavior were anxiety, sex, and close friends to confide in. 2. Sympathy, self-esteem and social skills were higher in the victim-conformity group than in the other two groups. Anxiety was higher in the onlooker group than in the other two groups. In the case of the victim-conformity group compared to the bully-conformity group, the parents showed more generous attitude toward their children, a more harmonious atmosphere existed within family members, and the group showed better relationship with teachers. Finally, the victim-conformity group showed a positive attitude toward school atmosphere, compared to the other two groups.
The purposes of this study was to identify perfume purchasing and using behavior according to men's fashion lifestyle. Self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. The subjects were 317 men aged 19-40. The results were as follows: First, over half of men had purchased at least one perfume during last year and the price was 30,000-60,000won. Men selected perfumes which harmonized with their image or purposes of using perfumes. Men selected a perfume as a present for their girl friends or wives to convey their concern or love. Most men purchased perfumes at department stores and selected after experiencing samples, and by affecting advertisements of newspapers or journals. Over 60% of men possessed at least one perfume and most of them were imported perfumes. Most men used perfume on a special day such as dates or job interviews, and they received perfume as a gift from their girl friends or wives. Most men used perfumes to enjoy fragrances by themselves and preferred sea fragrance most. Second, factors of men's fashion lifestyle were fashion information, individuality, conservativeness, ostentation, activity, and fashion style. Men were segmented into ostentatious consumption group, active group, fashion leader group, and fashion retard group. Third, fashion leader group purchased perfumes more than other groups and fashion retard group purchased the least.
The present study investigated the influence of withdrawal on children's best friendship including prevalence of best friendship, friendship quality, and friends' psychosocial characteristics. Subjects were 471 fifth and sixth graders recruited from two public schools. The peer nomination index was used to assess peer victimization, withdrawal, and prosocial behavior. Peer rejection and acceptance were also measured. Children reported on the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale(Bukowsi et al., 1994). Results showed that compared to control group, withdrawn children had fewer best friends and perceived their friendship quality more negatively. Moreover, withdrawn children are similar with their best friends in respect with prosocial behavior, withdrawal, peer victimization, and peer rejection level.
This study explored the level and general propensity of consumption-oriented attitude and impulsive buying behavior of high school students, and clarified factors affecting impulsive buying. The research results can be summarized as follows. 1. The degree of consumption-oriented attitude and impulsive buying behavior of high school students were relatively low. 2. Consumption-oriented attitude was found to have significant differences among students based on monthly allowance, self-esteem, influence of friends, influence of mass media and influence of consumer education at school. Moreover, impulsive buying behavior was found to have significant differences according to sex, level of parents's education, fathers job, monthly household income, monthly allowance, influence of home, influence of friends and influence of mass media. 3. The impulsive buying differed significantly according to consumption-oriented attitude. That is, the group showing a higher degree of consumption-oriented attitude also indicated higher impulsive buying. 4. The variables affecting the level of impulsive buying behavior were the level of consumption-oriented attitude, influence of mass media, influence of friends and sex. In other words, consumption-oriented attitude, influence of mass media and influence of friends had a positive affect, and female students were more apt to impulsive buying than male students.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model for future smoking intention among Korean adolescents aged 13 to 15 in order to identify the high risk group exposed to future smoking. Methods: The data was collected from a total of 5940 students who participated in a self-administrated questionnaire of a cross-sectional school-based survey, the 2004 Korea Global Youth Tobacco Survey. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were carried out to identify the relevant determinants associated with intentions of adolescents’ future smoking. Receiver Operation Characteristic (ROC) assessment was applied to evaluate the explanation level of the developed prediction model. Results: 8.4% of male and 7.2% of female participants show their intentions of future smoking. Among non-smoking adolescents; who have past smoking experience [odds ratio (OR) 2.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.92- 3.88]; who have intentions of smoking when close friends offer a cigarette (OR 31.47; 95% CI = 21.50 - 46.05); and who have friends that are mostly smokers (OR 5.27; 95% CI = 2.85 - 9.74) are more likely to be smokers in the future. The prediction model developed from this study consists of five determinants; past smoking experience; parents smoking status; friends smoking status; ownership of a product with a cigarette brand logo; and intentions of smoking from close friends’ cigarette offer. The area under the ROC curve was 0.8744 (95% CI=0.85 - 0.90) for current non-smokers. Conclusions: For efficiency, school-based smoking prevention programs need to be designed to target the high risk group exposed to future smoking through the prediction model developed by the study, instead of implementing the programs for all the students.
Background: The trend of aging society is occurring globally, and with it, one of the health problems that is emerging is frailty. Efforts are being made to account for the increasing prevalence of frailty, and various modifiable factors are being considered in regards to frailty. Because social contact has shown beneficial effects in terms of health in previous studies, it is increasingly being considered in relation to frailty. The purpose of this study was to assess the association of different types of social contact with frailty status. Methods: A total of 1,200 Korean elders aged 70-84 years old were included in the study. Using Fried's Cardiovascular Health Study index to categorize the frailty status, the relationship between frailty status and frequency of contact (i.e., with family members, friends, or neighbors) was analyzed using multinomial logistic regression accounting for confounders. Results: Adjusting for all covariates, frequency of contact with friends was the most statistically significant. Less frequent contact was associated with a significantly higher odds of pre-frailty: monthly (odds ratio [OR], 2.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27-3.20), and rarely (OR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.17-2.99), with daily contact group as reference. Also, those contacting friends monthly (OR, 5.04; 95% CI, 2.29-11.08) or rarely (OR, 3.23; 95% CI, 1.58-6.61) were more likely to be frail compared to the daily group. Conclusion: Frequency of social contact, especially with friends, is strongly associated with frailty.
