  • A study on the development of control loading system for a pilot command in the helicopter flight training device is performed. The key issue of the device is how to provide closely the real feeling of the stick forces to the trainer during the flight training. Focusing on this proviso and considering the suitable approach than the complexity of the hydraulic system, we adopt the AC servo motor system although its inherent disadvantages such as the torque ripple and the stick-slip friction effect at a low control force. However, we overcome these detrimental effects by introducing the appropriate control device and the robust structural design of the actuating system, thereby the feasibility and applicability to the system can be obtained by showing good performance, meeting the required specification.

Force Display Based on Simultaneous Actuation of Motors and Brakes

  • In the virtual environment, force feedback to the human operator makes virtual experiences more realistic. However, the force feedback using active actuators such as motors can make the system active and sometimes unstable. To ensure the safe operation and enhance the haptic feeling, stability should be guaranteed. Both motors and brakes are commonly used for haptic device. A brake can generate a torque only against its rotation, but it is intrinsically stable. Consequently, motors and brakes are complementing each other. In this research, a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) haptic device equipped with both motors and brakes has been developed to provide better haptic effects. Each DOF is actuated by a pair of motor and brake. Modeling of the environment and the control method are needed to utilize both actuators. For various haptic effects, contact with the virtual wall and representation of friction effect are extensively investigated in this paper. It is shown that the hybrid haptic system is more suited to some applications than the motor-based active haptic system.

  • When a bolt is tightened up to the range of plastic deformation, yielding is governed by the combined stresses due to the axial force developed in the bolt and the frictional torque developed on the thread in contact with the nut. Consideration is taken account of the fact that the unused portion of the thread has least sectional area being subject to initial yielding. Once yielding has taken place some strain hardening effect will result, Incremental stress-strain relations are used to treat the continued yielding, which is equivalent to treat continued yielding as if summing up the effects of thin walled cylinders subject to plastic deformation. M10 bolts of common and fine series thread are used for computational purposes. Variation of axial forces and frictional torques vs. the frictional coefficients tare presented together with other plots showing some characteristics of bolt under plastic deformation.

  • This paper describes the application of sliding mode control based on the variable structure control(VSC) concept for high-performance position control of an induction servo motor A design method based on external load parameters has been developed for the robust control of AC induction servo drive. Also, a slip frequency vector control with software current control technique has been adopted to achieve fast response of an induction motor drive The position control scheme is comprised of a variable structure controller and slip frequency vector control for inverter fed induction servo motor. Simulated results are given to verify the proposed design method by adoption of sliding mode and show robust control for a change of shaft inertia, viscous friction and torque disturbance.

  • Compound continuously variable transmission(CVT) mechanisms are proposed, which can offer a backward mode, a geared neutral, an underdrive mode and an overdrive mode. They are composed of a 2K-H I type differential gear unit, a V-belt type continuously variable unit(CVU), a few friction clutches and gears, and not required of a starting device as a torque converter. Compound CVT mechanisms developed here present two distinct operating modes which are a power circulation mode and a power split mode. The transition of two modes takes place at the particular CVU speed ratio. For these CVT mechanisms, performance analysis related to speed ratio, power ratio and efficiency are executed and proven by experimental studies.

  • A nonlinear dynamic simulation model from cranking to idle speed is developed to optimize the cold start process of a diesel engine. Physically-based first order nonlinear differential equations and some algebraic equations describing engine dynamics and starter motor dynamics are used to model the performance of cold starting process which is very complex and involves many components including the cold start aiding method. These equations are solved using numerical schemes to describe the starting process of a diesel engine and to study the effects of cold starting parameters. The validity of this model is examined by a cold start test at $-20^{\circ}C$. Using the developed model the effects of the important starting variables on the cold starting processes were investigated. This model can be served as a tool for designing computer aided control systems that improve cold start performance.

  • The constant velocity joint(CVJ) used for transmitting torque to the front wheels is an important part in automotive drive system. There are several types of constant velocity joints. Typically, they are classified by fixed and plunging constant velocity joints. The axial force generated in plunging constant velocity joints influences significantly the noise, vibration and harshness. For heaps of time, many constant velocity joint markers have been studying and developing a valid method to reduce the axial force and extensive tests have been carried out on rigs. This paper presents the analysis method to predict the axial force of a double offset constant velocity joint(DOJ), a kind of plunging constant velocity joint, and the influence of ball-cage dimension tolerance on the axial force.

  • We investigate the evolution of the initially tilted, self-gravitating disks in a live axisymmetric or triaxial halo. Our study shows how the axisymmetric and triaxiaility of the halo alters the evolution of the warp compared to the spherical case. We attribute the development of warps to the torque between a halo and disk and that between the inner and outer regions of the disk. We discuss if the triaxial halo can be responsible for the formation and maintenance of the warp phenomena even in the presence of dynamical friction between the disk and the halo.

  • Effect of coulomb friction and backlash on the single loop posit ion control has been studied for the precision position control. We studied and showed the limit cycle on the single loop system which used a ball screw that had the backlash. Also, We made an inner loop with a classical velocity and torque controller which was forcing the $i_d$ current to be zero by using a permanent-magnet synchronous motor and composed the outer loop with linear sensor for sensing a position of the loader. We have been shown a good result by using the dual loop through numerical simulation method.

Experimental Study on the Dynamic Behaviour of Oil Seals (오일시일의 동적거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the dynamic behaviour of rubber oil seals when the interferences between the shaft and the seal lip as well as the dynamic eccentricities are present. The micro-separation of the sealing gap was observed with the aid of an image processing apparatus. The temperature of the seal lip edge, friction torque and the dynamic sealing gap profile are experimentally investigated for the initial interference and the shaft eccentricity. The data was simultaneously measured under the operation conditions. Experimental results show that, as the shaft speed is increased, the leakage of sealed fluids is increasing for a certain range of shaft speeds. The test data indicates that the shaft eccentricity clearly produces the gap separation between the shaft and the seal lip which is unable to follow the radial displacement of shaft as the shaft speed increases.
