This study was conducted to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir lap joints. Invar 42 and SS 400 were selected as the experimental materials, and friction stir welding was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm/min. The application of friction stir welding to Invar 42 effectively reduced the grain size in the stir zone; the average grain size of Invar 42 was reduced from $11.5{\mu}m$ in the base material to $6.4{\mu}m$ in the stir zone, which resulted in an improvement in the mechanical properties of the stir zone. The joint interface between Invar 42 and SS 400 showed a relatively sound weld without voids and cracks, and the intermetallic compounds with $L1_2$ type in lap jointed interface were partially formed with size of 100 nm. Moreover, the hook in the advancing side of Invar 42 was formed from SS 400, which contributed to maintenance of the tensile strength. The evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir lap jointed Invar 42 and SS 400 are also discussed herein.
The microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir welded lap joints of Inconel 600 and SS 400 were evaluated; friction stir welding was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm/min. Electron back-scattering diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were introduced to analyze the grain boundary characteristics and the precipitates, respectively. Application of friction stir welding was notably effective at reducing the grain size of the stir zone. As a result, the reduced average grain size of Inconel 600 ranged from $20{\mu}m$ in the base material to $8.5{\mu}m$ in the stir zone. The joint interface between Inconel 600 and SS 400 showed a sound weld without voids and cracks, and MC carbides with a size of around 50 nm were partially formed at the Inconel 600 area of lap joint interface. However, the intermetallic compounds that lead to mechanical property degradation of the welds were not formed at the joint interface. Also, a hook, along the Inconel 600 alloy from SS 400, was formed at the advancing side, which directly brought about an increase in the peel strength. In this study, we systematically discussed the evolution of microstructures and mechanical properties of the friction stir lap joint between Inconel 600 and SS 400.

The article aims to apply a friction stir spot welding for producing the lap joint between AA5052 aluminum alloy and C11000 copper alloy. The dimension of the materials was 100 mm in length, 30 mm in width and 1.0 mm in thickness. The copper plate was set overlap the aluminum plate by 30 mm. The welding parameter was the rotating speed of 2500-4000 rpm, the pin inserting rate of 2-8 mm/min and the holding time of 6 sec. The mechanical properties test and the microstructure investigation were performed to evaluate the lap joint quality. The summarized results are as follows. The friction stir spot welding could produce effectively the lap joint between AA5052 and C11000 copper. Increase of the rotating speed and holding time directly affected to decrease the tensile shear strength of the lap joint. The optimized welding parameters in this study that indicated the tensile shear strength of 864 N was the rotating speed of 3500 rpm, the pin inserting rate of 6 mm/min and the holding time of 4sec. The experimental results also showed that the hardness of the weld metal was lower than that of the base materials.

This article aims to apply a friction stir spot welding for producing a lap joint of AA1100 aluminum alloy and SGACD zinc coated steel. The experiment was designed by MINITAB and then investigated the relation among the friction spot joint parameters. The experimental results are as follows. The friction spot joining could successively produce the lap joint of AA1100 aluminum alloy and SGACD zinc coated steel. Interaction between the rotate speed, the hold time and the tool insert speed affected to vary the tensile shear strength of the lap joint. The prediction of the optimized welding parameters that indicated the tensile shear strength of 1966 N was the rotated speed of 4000 rpm, the pin hold time of 6 sec, the pin insert rate of 6 mm/min with the S/N ratio of 66.56 that was higher than that of the total mean S/N ratio. The practical experiment of the predicted welding parameters indicated the tensile shear strength of 2165 N and had the S/N ratio of 66.70 that was higher than the predicted tensile shear strength.

The butt and the lap welding by friction stir welding performs with $2mm^t$ 1050 aluminum alloy sheet. This paper shows behaviors of property such as vickers hardness, yielding and ultimate stresses, and macro structures for weld zone cross section of the butt and the lap jointed specimens. It is also carried out making comparison with maximum loads, stress-strain diagrams, and deformation after the guided bending test and fracture behaviors between the butt and the lap jointed specimens. It is found that the weldability of the butt jointed specimen is better than that of the lap jointed specimen.
In this study, the microstructure and mechanical properties of spot friction stir welded A 5052 alloy were investigated. Especially, the effect of insertion depth of welding tool on microstructural changes and mechanical properties was investigated in order to obtain the optimum spot friction stir welding condition. The lap shear load of spot friction stir welded A 5052 alloy plates showed lower value at the shallowest insertion depth and increased with tool insertion depth. At 1.6mm, the maximum value of 3.35 kN was obtained, and then dropped to lower load when the insertion depth was deeper. Spot friction stir welded joints showed shear fracture mode at shallower insertion depths and fracture mode changed to plug fracture mode as the insertion depth was deeper.

The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has mainly been used for making butt joints in Al alloys. The development of Friction Stir Lap Welding (FSLW) would expand the number of applications. In this study, for effective application on thin aluminum alloy lap joint, non-heat treatment A5052 alloys were joined by FSLW with the length of probe 2.3 mm and 3.0 mm. Investigating the characteristics of joint area showed the results were as below ; When the length of probe was 2.3 mm, good joint area was formed at all welding condition except for 600 rpm-700 mm/min. In the case of 3.0 mm probe length, there was formed good joint area without defects at 1500 rpm-100 mm/min. The width of joint area, position and size of defects were very important factors for FSLW, due to heat input and stirring intensity.

Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials are one of the biggest issues in terms of light-weight and eco-friendly technology of the automotive, aircraft and ship industry. In this study, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials is introduced with different tool rotational speed. Materials used in experimentation consist of A357 gravity cast aluminum alloy and FB590 high-strength steel plates. Dissimilar materials of plate type are fabricated with width of 150mm, length of 300mm and thickness of 3mm and welding is carried out by the lap joint method. The correlation between probe length and mechanical properties were investigated according to rotational speed and welding speed at tool tilt angle 0 degree. Consequently, feasibility of FSWed dissimilar materials were successfully presented in case of cast aluminum and high-strength steel at lap joint method.
The friction stir welding technique is a derivative of conventional friction welding, which enables the advantages of solid-phase welding to be applied to the fabrication of long butt and lap joints, with very little postweld distortion. Friction stir welding is a remarkable new welding technique for joining aluminum alloys and has the potential for welding other ferrous materials. It has already been developed beyond a laboratory curiosity and has been proved as a potential practical welding technique offering low-distortion, high-quality, low-cost welds from simple concept machine tool welding equipment. To bring this remarkable method of welding aluminum alloys to the attention of Industry, this article introduces the basic principle of friction stir welding, pointing out the practical advantages and most important of all, describes the exceptionally good metallurgical and mechanical properties.

The focus of this investigation is to evaluate the effect of joining parameter on the microstructure and mechanical properties of welds produced by friction stir lap welding. The dissimilar Al alloys, KS5J32 and AA6K31, were joined by friction stir lap welding technique under several welding conditions, and KS5J32 alloy was placed on the top of AA6K31 alloy. The tool rotation speeds were 1000, 1250, and 1500rpm, and the welding speeds were 100, 300, 500, 700mm/min, respectively. The results showed that two shapes of nugget, such as onion ring and irregular vortex type, were observed with various revolutionary pitch. In all welding conditions, fracture occurred at the soften region of bottom sheet(AA6K31) and the strengths were 64~78% of those of base metal. Fractured positions were classified into three types : HAZ, triple point, void depending on the revolutionary pitch. The actual thickness of specimen at the fractured location was decreased with decreasing heat input. A linear relationship exists between the effective thickness of fractured position and peak load.
