  • The mechanical characteristics of the high speed steel by Powder metallurgy Process (PM-HSS) has been reported to improve with several alloying constituents, such as high carbon, vanadium and cobalt. In this paper, sliding wear test has been conducted using a pin-on-disc machine for three PM-HSS which contains 0%, 5% and 12% cobalt respectively, in order to evaluate the effect of cobalt on wear properties of PM-HSS. The results of this study showed that the wear resistance of PM-HSS has been increased by the addition of cobalt on the range of experimental friction velocities. When compared with the effect of addition of cobalt, the wear resistance of PM-HSS with 5% cobalt has been found to be superior to that of PM-HSS with 12% cobalt.

  • For the wear characteristics assessment of Saemaul train passing through curves, an analysis model for multi-car system has been developed. By using this model and ADAMS/Rail, sensitivity analyses have been conducted for the wear characteristics by changing the related parameters. According to the increase of running speed, the wear number, the sliding mean and friction coefficient were increased. At high speed, the wear number, the sliding mean and friction coefficient of left wheel showed higher than right wheel. If the cant increased, the wear number the sliding mean and friction coefficient increased. but decreased based on the balance cant value by the curvature and running speed.

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the purity variation of the alumina ceramics on the water lubrication mechanism. The annular surface of wear testing specimens of the alumina ceramics with different alumina purity against STB2 was rubbed in the distilled water under various sliding speed, contact pressure and sliding distance. The friction coefficient decreased lowered with formation of corrosion products due to the tribochemical reation as the sliding speed and contact load was increased. With increased sliding speed, the lower purity of 85 percent contribute largely to even degree of the friction surface, even it have about $\mu$ of 0.3 degree by the influence of a pore and impurities SiO$_{2}$. The friction surface of ceramics protacted by oxide was transfer from STB2.

  • Within the practical ranges of speed and load, the formation of transfer films and the consequent effects on the friction and wear behavior of ceramic materials during repeated pass sliding contact were studied. These tests were done using $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC and $Si_{3}N_{4}$ with the cylinder-on-flat test configuration. The three pairings behaved differently, even if some wear mechanisms were common to the three systems. The $Al_{2}O_{3}$ pair showed the least wear in overall conditions, followed by the $Si_{3}N_{4}$ pair in harder sliding conditions. The wear of SiC was very high at severe loading. In case of $AL_{2}O_{3}$ and $Si_{3}N_{4}$, the transfer film, whenever formed, is strongly attached, enough to resist being wiped off by the slider. As a consequence, the formation of this f'fim leads to a decrease in the wear rate because of the protecting role of the film. The presence of the film at the contact interface also results in high friction. Also, the wear rate of each ceramics is related to the frictional power provided by load, speed and friction.

  • Republic of korea has begun operating high speed train service according as KTX service operation starts in 2004. Also, EMU whose maximum speed is over 150 kph will be starting to service with electrification and improvement of existing railroad. Moreover, metropolitan electric railways have begun an express service to increase scheduled speed. Therefore, running resistance of rolling stock becomes more important factor effects on the performance. Running resistance of rolling stock is the factor which is necessary for the performance or operation plan of rolling stock, and it's related to rolling friction, slip friction, drag force, gradient, acceleration, curvature, tunnel condition and so on. It is possible to be calculated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). However it is predicted by experimental equation from running resistance test because of the complex calculation and manifold variables. In this paper, studies about running resistance of rolling stock is introduced, and each term of experimental equation is studied through theoretical approximation. Also, running resistance of rolling stock is estimated by the result of running resistance test, and effects being related to friction, drag force, gradient is examined.

  • Friction mechanisms is a very important role in the industrial machinery. However, many experiments have been conducted to reduce the loss of energy resources and parts used due to friction because the friction force adversely affects parts, efficiency, noise, and the like of the power unit. Therefore, in this study, the friction coefficient according to the characteristics of the lubricant was measured to find out which Grease Lubricant maintains the low friction coefficient without being most affected by external conditions. A total of five grease lubricants were tested in this study: GHP CAL 301, GHP EP 2, GHP KG 10, GHP HPG 2, and GHP HTG 2. And the friction coefficient was conducted by changing the load conditions (2, 4, 6, 8, 10N) and rotational speed (24, 48, 67, 86, 105, 124, 143, 162vrpm) using a pin-on-disk wear test system. Also, duty number were calculated. As a result, it was confirmed that in all grease lubricants, the speed did not significantly affect the friction coefficient, and it was confirmed that in all lubricants, the size of the friction coefficient decreased as the load increased from a small load to a large load. In addition, it was determined from the experimental results that GHP EP 2 is the most suitable as a grease lubricant and GHP CAL 301 is not the most suitable.

  • Magnesium alloy has been focussed as lightweight material owing to its high strength even though low density with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy and plastic material. Friction stir welding technique was performed by rotating and plunging a shouldered tool with a small diameter pin into the joint line between two butted plates and useful to join magnesium alloy. In this paper, the experiments of friction stir welding were done to investigate the joint characteristics of AZ31 magnesium alloy. For its evaluation, the orthogonal array method$(L_{27}(3^{13}))$ was applied with four factors of pin diameter, shoulder diameter, travel speed and rotation speed of tool and also three levels of each factor. Nine tools were worked through shoulder diameter of 9, 12, 15mm and pin root diameter of 3, 4, 5mm. In addition tensile tests were excuted for the assessment of mechanical properties for joint conditions. From the results, pin diameter, shoulder diameter, and rotating speed of tool influenced on the tensile strength meaningful, but welding speed did not influence on that by the variance analysis. Beside of that, optimum condition of tensile strength was estimated as following ; shoulder diameter:15mm, welding speed:200mm/min, rotating speed:200rpm.

  • It is implicated in the current road design manual that design speed is well representing the operating speed of drivers. On the contrary, the disparity between the design speed and operating speed means that current road design cannot guarantee the safety and comfort of driving. In this context, operating speed was observed at the two lane rural roadways to find out the relation of operating speed and design speed. In addition to this, the friction factor from supply and demand which was derived from the operating speed was compared in terms of the dynamics in driving safety factor. It was concluded that the actual speed was consistently exceeding the design speed at the horizontal curves having the radius less than or equal to 200 m. Similarly, the demanded side friction was also consistently exceeding the supplied side friction at the horizontal curves having the radius less than or equal to 200 m and the amount of difference was also inversely proportional to the radius of the horizontal curves.

  • This paper investigates the accuracy of vehicle pre-braking speed estimates based upon tire/roadway coefficient of friction (drag factor) measurements and skid mark measurements Data for pre-braking and pre-skidding speeds were collected to determine if there were any correlations between pre-braking speeds and pre-skidding speeds. Braking tests were performed on two vehicles using various measurement devices including a fifth wheel, a speed gun, and a vericom 2000. The vehicle speeds, braking distances, skid mark distances, and deceleration histories were recorded. From these data. coefficients of friction and vehicle pre-skidding speeds for the tested road surface were calculated. The pre-skidding speeds were then compared to the actual pre-braking speeds of the vehicles in order to establish relationships between pre-skidding and pre-braking speed. A correlation between the Pre-skidding speed and the actual pre-braking speed was established for the study data.

  • Friction stir welding is a relatively new solid state joining process. A6061-T6 and A5052-H32 aluminium alloy has gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of light weight structures requiring a high strength to weight ratio and good corrosion resistance. This friction stir process uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat in the abutting surfaces. The welding parameters such as tool rotational speed, welding speed, etc., and tool pin profile play a major role in deciding FSP zone formation in A6061-T6 and A5052-H32 aluminium alloy. Three different tool pin profiles have been used to fabricate the dissimilar butt joints. The formation of friction stir processed zone has been analysed macroscopically. Tensile properties of the joints have been evaluated and correlated with the friction stir processed zone formation.
