An experimental study has been performed to investigate the characteristics of air-side heat transfer and friction of a fined tube heat exchanger under heating conditions. Air enthalpy calorimeter was used to obtain the performance evaluation and analysis of the fined tube heat exchanger. Eight finned tube heat exchangers with slit fin, louver fin, and plain fin were used. The air-side heat transfer coefficient was calculated by the log-mean-temperature-difference. Air-side heat transfer and friction were presented in terms of j factor and friction factor on Reynolds number. From the experimental result, it was found that the variations of air-side heat transfer and friction of fined tube heat exchanger with the change of the fin configuration, row number, fin pitch, and tube circuit were obtained. j factor and friction factor decreased with Reynolds number increased. The tube circuit affected the air-side heat transfer and friction. In the case of slit and louver fin, j factor of 1st row was higher than that of 2nd row. But, with increasing Re, j factor was reversed. The characteristics of j factor and friction factor of 2nd row heat exchanger were different according to the kind of fins.

An accelerometer-based system was designed and constructed for drag measurement in a shock tunnel. Drag coefficient of a conical model was measured under a Mach 6 flow condition. A simple and intuitive calibration method was presented to compensate for the friction force of the drag measurement system, and the results of the measurement were compared with computational fluid dynamics in which the simple conical model was analyzed. The influence of drag measurement interference by supports of various shapes was identified and the design was presented to minimize. The drag coefficient measurement using the modified support showed that the error of the drag coefficient by the support was decreased.
Friction stir welding was first reported by TWI(The Welding Institute) in 1991, and this welding method has been rapidly used in various industrial areas such railway, automobile, aerospace and shipbuilding industry. Here, we study core characteristics of friction stir welding (FSW) applied to Al 6005-T6 extruded sheets, which is the typical alloy used for railway car bodies. With the fixed welding speed of 500 mm/min, the rotating tool speed was varied from 600 to 1800 RPM. The results of hardness measurement revealed that the hardness of nugget area is ~70% with respect to the parent material, and for the selected range of rotation speed, no clear dependence was observed and the hardness values close to the parent materials were achieved for the area located 5 mm away from the welding interface. The tension test shows that yield strength and tensile strength were slightly decreased with increasing RPM, with no observed difference for the elongation.
A semi-empirical correlation has been developed for adiabatic interfacial friction factors in a long horizontal air-water countercurrent stratified flow conditions. Using a pipe and duct test sections, a series of experiments hate been conducted varying non-dimensional water depth and flow rates of air. On the basis of simultaneous measurement of the main flow parameters in a horizontal pipe and a duct, a semi-empirical correlation for the interfacial friction factor in a stratified flow regime has been developed employing a new concept of surface roughness in wavy flow. A total of 201 data point, including 15 concurrent pipe flow test data of others, have been used in the present analysis. A comparison between the data and the predictions of the present correlation shows that the agreement is within $\pm$30%.
A stereo PIV measurements in a circulating water channel has been performed to investigate the skin friction reduction mechanism of the outer-layer vertical blades first devised by Hutchins. In a recent PIV measurement study, considerable skin friction reduction was achieved as much as 2.73%~7.95% by outer-layer vertical blades array. In the present study, the influence of vertical blades array upon the characteristics of the turbulent coherent structures was analyzed by proper orthogonal decomposition method. It is observed that the vortical structures are cut and deformed by blades array and also the turbulent intensity and the Reynolds stress were weakened by the blades. These phenomena strongly associate the skin-friction drag reduction mechanism in the turbulent boundary layer flow.

The automotive air conditioning hose is used for connecting the components of air conditioner in a vehicle. The hose is usually manufactured by the swaging process to connect the rubber hose with the metal fitting at the end of the hose. In case that the clamping force is small, the refrigerant gas in the hose can leak locally under the severe operating circumstances. The practical test of clamping force is performed by means of the measurement of separation force. In this study, the swaging process of a hose is simulated with the finite element method, to investigate the effect of friction coefficient on the clamping force. The contact condition is used in consideration of real manufacturing process, and the material properties for the Mooney-Rivlin model is obtained by the experimental results. The result interpretations are focused on the contact forces, which is displayed graphically with respect to friction coefficient, on the surfaces between the hose and the metal fittings.

Friction stir welding was performed using six welding conditions to evaluate the mechanical properties and microstructure of the welded zone based on its temperature change in the extruded plate of magnesium alloy AZ61. The welded zone temperature was measured using a thermocouple, and the maximum temperature ranges for the advancing and retreating sides were approximately $210-315^{\circ}C$ and $254-339^{\circ}C$, respectively. Depending on the welding conditions, a temperature difference of more than $100^{\circ}C$ was observed. In addition, the maximum yield strength and maximum tensile strength of the welded component was 84.4% and 96.9%, respectively, of those of the base material. For the temperatures exceeding $300^{\circ}C$, oxidation defects occurred in the weld zone, which decreased the mechanical strength of the weld zone. The microstructure and texture confirmed that fracture occurred because of the grain size deviation of the welding tool and the severe anisotropy of the texture of the welded joints.
While there is no standards on slip risk for contaminants on surface, glycerol is described in standard contaminant for measuring coefficient of friction(COF) and slip resistance such as ISO 13287. But that is just used to measure the slip resistance of surface materials and shoes not to evaluate the contaminant materials. Therefore the objective of this study was to find out the relationship between standard contaminant and the contaminants used usually at the workplaces. For this, some measurement criteria were acquired from the analysis based on biomechanics and kinetics of human gait during slips. The slip resistance according to viscosity of the contaminants was measured applying the criteria and slip probability was determined by the gait analysis. Some factors which should be considered when measuring the slip resistance were identified. The velocity, acceleration, contact time and contact pressure should be 1 m/sec, 10 $m/sec^2$, 350 kPa and less than 0.5sec respectively. The variation of viscosity according to temperature for working oils was different from that of standard contaminant. The static coefficient of friction (SCOF) of working oils was almost 0.5 times as large as the SCOF of standard contaminant. So it was assumed to be difficult to compare the contaminants at the workplaces with the glycerol as a standard contaminant for estimating the slip risk.

An experimental study was peformed to measure the viscosity of microencapsulated PCM slurries as the functions of its concentration and temperature, and also influence to its fluid dynamics. For the viscosity measurement, a rotary type viscometer, which was equipped with temperature control system, was adopted. The slurry was mixed with water and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate as a surfactant by which its suspended particles were dispersed well without the segregation of particles during the experiment. The viscosity was increased as the concentration of MicroPCM particle added. The surfactant increased 5% of the viscosity over the working fluid without particles. Experiments were proceeded by changing parameters such as PCM particles'concentration as well as the temperature of working fluid. As a result, a model to the functions of temperature for the working fluid and its particle concentration is proposed. The proposed model, for which its standard deviation shows 0.8068, is agreed well with the reference's data. The pressure drop was measured by U-tube manometer, and then the friction factor was obtained. It was noted that the pressure drop was not influenced by the state of PCM phase, that is solid or liquid in its core materials at their same concentration. On the other hand, it was described that the pressure drop of the slurry was much increased over the working fluid without particles. A friction factor was placed on a straight line in all working fluids of the laminar flow regardless of existing particles as we expected.

In this paper, the dynamic controller design problem of a redundant planar 2-dof parallel manipulator is studied. Using the Euler-Lagrange equation, we formulate the dynamic model of the parallel manipulator in the joint space and propose an augmented PD controller with forward dynamic compensation for the parallel manipulator. By formulating the controller in the joint space, we eliminate the complex computation of the Jacobian matrix of joint angles with end-effector coordinate. So with less computation, our controller is easier to implement, and a shorter sampling period can be achieved, which makes the controller more suitable for high-speed motion control. Furthermore, with the combination of static friction model and viscous friction model, the active joint friction of the parallel manipulator is studied and compensated in the controller. Based on the dynamic parameters of the parallel manipulator evaluated by direct measurement and identification, motion control experiments are implemented. With the experiments, the validity of the dynamic model is proved and the performance of the controller is evaluated. Experiment results show that, with forward dynamic compensation, the augmented PD controller can improve the tracking performance of the parallel manipulator over the simple PD controller.
