In the case of a belt-pulley type CVT that transmits a driving force by using a variable pulley and a metal belt, slippage occurs due to transmission of power by using a belt, which results in a decrease in efficiency. Therefore, in this study, the rails were machined on the plate surface of the pulley to reduce the friction and slip between the belt and the pulley while applying the characteristics of the CVT. As the plate is rotated by the shape of the rail, a centrifugal belt pulley type continuously variable transmission system which shifts while varying the radius of rotation of the belt that transmits power is studied. Accordingly, the structure of the pulley was designed and the centrifugal belt pulley type continuously variable transmission was Manufactured. In addition, to verify the suitability of the manufactured transmission, the power transmission efficiency was monitored by establishing an interface with the controller. The structural analysis of the plate proved the suitability of the centrifugal belt pulley type continuously variable transmission.
The precise and reliable loss model for induction motor and converter system is very important in order to predict the efficiency performance of variable speed drives. This paper proposes an accurate loss model of induction motor and converter system. The motor losses, such as stator and rotor copper loss, core loss and stray loss, are considered for fundamental and harmonic frequencies. Also considered are the skin effect on rotor resistance, temperature effect on bath stator and rotor resistance, magnetizing inductance saturation, and friction and windage loss. All the above features are incorporated in a synchronous frame dynamic d-q equivalent circuit. The converter system, consisting of a diode rectifier and PWM transistor inverter, is modeled accurately for conduction and switching losses. Validity of the models, in both steady state and transient conditions, is verified by simulations.
A rotary vane blower was developed as an air supply system for fuel cell application. As one way of improving the blower efficiency, a roller was adapted between vanes and cylinder housing. The performance of blower was investigated experimentally. The blower power input was about 115W to compress the air at normal atmospheric condition to 0.2 bar with the flow rate of 140 NLPM, resulting in the blower overall efficiency of 43%. After 400 hours of operation, the performance of blower was not changed. The result showed that developed blower was confirmed to be suitable for fuel cell application.
Recent studies have discovered that a conventional passive isolation system may suffer from an excessive isolator displacement when subjected to a near-fault earthquake that usually has a long-period velocity pulse waveform. Semi-active isolation using variable friction dampers (VFD), which requires a suitable control law, may provide a solution to this problem. To control the VFD in a semi-active isolation system more efficiently, this paper investigates experimentally the possible use of a control law whose control logic is similar to that of the anti-lock braking systems (ABS) widely used in the automobile industry. This ABS-type controller has the advantages of being simple and easily implemented, because it only requires the measurement of the isolation-layer velocity and does not require system modeling for gain design. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the isolation period, which usually decides the isolation efficiency. In order to verify its feasibility and effectiveness, the ABS-type controller was implemented on a variable-friction isolation system whose slip force is regulated by an embedded piezoelectric actuator, and a seismic simulation test was conducted for this isolation system. The experimental results demonstrate that, as compared to a passive isolation system with various levels of added damping, the semi-active isolation system using the ABS-type controller has the better overall performance when both the far-field and the near-fault earthquakes with different PGA levels are considered.
The piston of a marine diesel engine works under severe conditions, including a combustion pressure of over 180 bar, high thermal load, and high speed. Therefore, the analyses of the fatigue strength, thermal load, clamping (bolting) system and lubrication performance are important in achieving a robust piston design. Designing the surface profile and the skirt ovality carefully is important to prevent severe wear and reduce frictional loss for engine efficiency. This study performs flexible multi-body dynamic and elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) analyses using AVL/EXCITE/PU are performed to evaluate tribological characteristics. The numerical techniques employed to perform the EHD analysis are as follows: (1) averaged Reynolds equation considering the surface roughness; (2) Greenwood_Tripp model considering the solid_to_solid contact using the statistical values of the summit roughness; and (3) flow factor considering the surface topology. This study also compares two cases of skirt shapes with minimum oil film thickness, peak oil film pressure, asperity contact pressure, wear rate using the Archard model and friction power loss (i.e., frictional loss mean effective pressure (FMEP)). Accordingly, the study compares the calculated wear pattern with the field test result of the piston operating for 12,000h to verify the quantitative integrity of the numerical analysis. The results show that the selected profile and the piston skirt ovality reduce friction power loss and peak oil film pressure by 7% and 57%, respectively. They also increase the minimum oil film thickness by 34%.
Currently, fuel efficiency becomes one of critical issues for automotive industries as concerns about environmental and energy problems grow. In an automatic transmission of an automobile, a drag torque due to a viscous drag of a fluid between friction and clutch plates is one of factors that degrade fuel economy. In this work, the drag torque characteristics of a wet clutch was experimentally investigated with respect to rotational speed, temperature of automatic transmission fluid (ATF), and gap between friction and clutch plates. The experimental results showed that drag torque increases to a certain level, and then decrease to the steady state value with increasing rotational speed. This behavior may be associated with two-phase flow of air and ATF at gap between friction and clutch plates. Also, it was found that the maximum drag torque value decreased as ATF viscosity decreases with increasing temperature. However, it was shown that the point at which the maximum drag torque occurs was not significantly affected by the ATF temperature. In addition, maximum drag torque was found to decrease as the gap between friction and clutch plates increased from 0.1 mm to 0.2 mm. Furthermore, it was observed that the generation of maximum drag torque was delayed as the gap increased. The outcomes of this work are expected to be helpful to gain a better understanding of drag torque characteristic of a wet clutch, and may therefore be useful in the design of wet clutch systems with improved performance.
Superior to traditional welded studs, high strength friction-grip bolted shear connectors facilitate the assembling and demounting of the composite members, which maximizes the potential for efficiency in the construction and retrofitting of new and old structures respectively. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the structural properties of high strength friction-grip bolts used in steel concrete composite beams. By means of push-out tests, an experimental study was conducted on post-installed high strength friction-grip bolts, considering the effects of different bolt size, concrete strength, bolt tensile strength and bolt pretension. The test results showed that bolt shear fracture was the dominant failure mode of all specimens. Based on the load-slip curves, uplifting curves and bolt tensile force curves between the precast concrete slab and steel beam obtained by push-out tests, the anti-slip performance of steel-concrete interface and shear behavior of bolt shank were studied, including the quantitative analysis of anti-slip load, and anti-slip stiffness, frictional coefficient, shear stiffness of bolt shank and ultimate shear capacity. Meanwhile, the interfacial anti-slip stiffness and shear stiffness of bolt shank were defined reasonably. In addition, a total of 56 push-out finite element models verified by the experimental results were also developed, and used to conduct parametric analyses for investigating the shear behavior of high-strength bolted shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams. Finally, on ground of the test results and finite element simulation analysis, a new design formula for predicting shear capacity was proposed by nonlinear fitting, considering the bolt diameter, concrete strength and bolt tensile strength. Comparison of the calculated value from proposed formula and test results given in the relevant references indicated that the proposed formulas can give a reasonable prediction.
Natural gas is a high-octane fuel that is effective in controlling knocking combustion. In addition, as a low-carbon fuel with a high hydrogen-carbon ratio, it emits less carbon dioxide and almost no particulate matter compared to conventional fossil fuels. Stoichiometric combustion engines equipped with a three-way catalyst are useful in various fields such as transportation and power generation because of their excellent exhaust emission reduction performance. However, stoichiometric combustion engines have a disadvantage of lower thermal efficiency compared to lean combustion engines. In this study, a combination of high compression ratio and Atkinson cycle was implemented in a 11 liter, 6-cylinder, spark-ignition engine to improve the thermal efficiency of the stoichiometric engine. As a result, pumping and friction losses were reduced and the operating range was extended with optimized Atkinson camshaft. Based on the exhaust gas limit temperature of 730℃, the maximum load and thermal efficiency were improved to BMEP 0.66 MPa and BTE 35.7% respectively.
The distribution of magnetic flux density of electro-magnetic chucks may clarify the clamping characteristics, which is strongly related to the machining efficiency and machining accuracy in surface grinding machine. Therefore the distribution of the normal and the tangential components of magnetic flux density have been analyzed theoretically. It appears that the normal component of magnetic flux density increases and the tangential component of magnetic flux density increases as the ratio of the separator width to the pitch, e/p decreases. The results seem to increase the stability and uniformity of normal component of magnetic flux density for the decreased e/p.
