In this study, we examined the friction characteristics of a dimple pattern on a carbon nitride coating. The study was conducted with a hexagonal array 40 ${\mu}m$ dimple pattern on a steel bearing containing a CNx coating. The area density of the dimple patterns were varied between 5% and 25%, the speed was varied from 0.06-0.26 m/s, and the load was varied between 20-100N. In general, we found that as the velocity increased, the friction coefficient increased. Furthermore, the friction coefficient was lowest at a load of 40N. The friction coefficient of the non-coated specimen was 0.025-0.15; on the other hand, the friction coefficient of the coated specimen was 0.002-0.02. Thus, we determined that the coated materials could reduce the friction coefficient by a factor of 7.5.
An active stick which supplies force feedback to the operator is developed in this study. A mathematical model of the active stick is derived, and compared with the experimental result. It turns out that the frictional torque due to the mechanical contacts of several parts of the stick is one of the major barriers to achieve high precision operation of the stick. The frictional effect of the stick is cancelled out by using a friction observer. The efficacy of the friction observer is verified through the numerical simulation. Because of the observer dynamics, there are some limitations in exact recovering the static friction and Stribeck effect. However, the friction observer follows the real friction on the average. It's anticipated that the application of the friction observer to the closed loop control of the active stick improves the performance of the displacement versus force characteristics, which will be proved experimentally in the further study.

It is important to understand the friction characteristics between piston-ring assembly and cylinder wall for the friction loss reduction as well as the solution of problem such as scuffing wear and oil consumption. A new system was developed for the piston-ring assembly friction force measurement. This system was applied to the friction force measurement to find its functional relationship with variables such as engine speed, oil viscosity, and engine load. The friction mean effective pressure(fmep) was found to have a linear relationship with$(\vpsilon{U})^{0.42}$ under motering and with$(\vpsilon{U})^{0.45}$ under firing operations, where $\vpsilon$ is the kinematic oil viscosity and U is mean piston speed.
Wear experiments were conducted using the SRV machine on the lubricated conditions of the several temperature and load. Oil samples were prepared by adding several friction modifiers into both paraffinic base oil and engine oil. Friction and wear characteristics of the oils were determined and are discussed in connection with the friction modifiers contained, the testing temperature and the load applied. From the study, it was found the MoDTC and the MoDTP, added into the engine oil, caused drastic increase in wear and had a tendendy to lose the friction-reducing property on some specific conditions of temperature and/or load, though they had the good property on other conditions. Ashless friction modifiers and dispersed $MoS_2$ investigated showed the good friction-reducing property, but the loads, where they became active, were different.
The wear of the contact in the tappet accounts for the greatest portion of entire friction loss of an engine, leading to the occurrence of abnormal wear. The coated specimens for earn-tappet wear test were producted by using PVD-Sputtering coating method. It examined the friction characteristics occurring between the earn and the tappet by using the dedicated wear tester and found that the friction torque value was reduced through comparison testing with the existing part when the low friction coating was applied. So application of the low friction coating to actual vehicles will reduce the fuel economy and occurrence of noise-vibration.
The need for developing a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in tilting pad proceeding bearings has been well-recognized, since previous experimental work about the performances of the bearings hypothesized that the friction in the bearings is closely related to their performances. Especially, the sliding friction between pad and pivot in the ball and socket type of the bearings can influence the performance of the bearing. We propose a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in the ball and socket type, which considers the geometrics of the pad and pivot of the bearings, by assuming the sliding friction in the ball and socket bearing as Coulomb friction. By utilizing the proposed model for pad-pivot friction, we show the analysis of Reynolds equation and energy equation, which explain the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of tilting pad proceeding bearings, by taking into account the turbulence and inlet pressure building as well. The results of the study show that the performance of titling-pad proceeding bearings can be greatly influenced by the pad-pivot friction. In particular, we have shown that the analysis of the pad-pivot friction is useful to explain the static proceeding loci and the dynamic characteristics of the ball and socket type of the bearings. Furthermore, for a given operating condition, we can obtain various equilibrium states which satisfy the static equilibrium conditions, by considering the pad-pivot friction.
Sintered metallic brake pads and low alloy heat resistance steel disks are applied to mechanical brake systems in high energy moving machines that are associated with recently developed 200km/h trains. This has led to the speed-up of conventional urban rapid transit. In this study, we use a lab-scale dynamometer to investigate the effects of the composition of friction materials on the tribological characteristics of sintered metallic brake pads and low alloy heat resistance steel under dry sliding conditions. We conduct test under a continuous pressure of 5.5 MPa at various speeds. To determine the optimal composition of friction materials for 200 km/h train, we test and the evaluate frictional characteristics such as friction coefficients, friction stability, wear rate, and the temperature of friction material, which depend on the relative composition of the Cu-Sn and Fe components. The results clearly demonstrate that the average friction coefficient is lower for all speed conditions, when a large quantity of iron power is added. The specimen of 25 wt% iron powder that was added decreased the wear of the friction materials and the roughness of the disc surface. However when 35 wt% iron powder was added, the disc roughness and the wear rate of friction materials increased By increasing the amount of iron powder, the surface roughness, and temperature of the friction materials increased, so the average friction coefficients decreased. An oxidation layer of $Fe_2O_3$ was formed on both friction surfaces.

In the tribological performance of materials, a textured surface reduces the friction coefficient and wear. This study investigates the effects of a pattern of 300 µm dimples in a hexagonal array on the tribological characteristics. Previous studies investigated 200 µm dimples by using a similar material and method. There are three frictional conditions based on the Stribeck curve: boundary friction, mixed friction, and fluid friction. In this experiment, we investigated the frictional characteristics by conducting frictional tests at sliding speeds ranging from 9.6 rpm to 143.3 rpm and a normal load ranging from 13.6 N to 92 N. We used a photolithography method to create dimples for surface texturing. We used five specimens with different dimple densities 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% in this study. The dimple density on the surface area is one of the important factors affecting the friction characteristics. The duty number graph indicates a fully developed fluid friction regime. Fluid friction occurs at a velocity of 28.7-143.3 rpm. We observed the best performance at a dimple density of 10% and a dimple diameter of 300 µm in the hexagonal array, the lowest friction coefficient at 0.0037 with 9.6 rpm 9.6N load, and the maximum friction coefficient at 0.0267 with 143.3 rpm 92N load.
This paper presents the hardness and friction characteristics of pb-free pin-bush bearing metal, which is manufactured by a centrifugal casting technology. A bronze metal with a high hardness and low friction properties is usually used for Diesel engine pin-bush bearing and high pressure cylinder. Pb-free metal for pin-bush bearings shows a little high hardness of 120 Hv compared with that of a conventional Pb bearing metal of 100~110 Hv. In general, the friction coefficient of pin-bush bearings is affected by a rotating speed and a load for various rubbing contact modes. But a contact load is more influential parameter when the contact rubbing mode transits from a mixed lubrication to a dry friction contact. The experimental result shows that the friction coefficient is more unstable at the dry contact mode compared with that of other two rubbing modes such as oil film contact and mixed friction conditions.
By using an experimental approach recently developed to determine the torque-tension relationship for bearing frictional characteristics of several typical bolted joints were studied. The experimental approach allows the direct determination of the bearing friction between the nut and its bearing surface. Detailed friction studies were made on the influences of the size and shape of the hole, the use of a slot in a bolted joint, contact area and position, and other factors such as turning speed, coating, and the use of wax on the bearing surface. The contact area and position of the washer have a marginal effect on the bearing friction. The organic coating on the nuts reduces the bearing friction significantly. Nuts with organic coating over a washer with zinc finish provide the smallest and the most consistent bearing friction. The results from the experimental investigation will be helpful for the better design of bolted joints bearing friction. The results from the experimental investigation Will be helpful for the better design of bolted joints.
