  • This study investigates the properties as the difference friction welding area on SM25C steel rod. The tensile and bending strength and of welded joints, the hardness distribution of welds, the microstructure of welds and the tensile fracture surfaces were mainly investigated through this experiment. The fixed friction welding conditions were revolution 2000rpm, friction pressure 70Mpa, friction time 1.5sec, upset pressure 100Mpa, upset time 2.0sec, upset length 2.8mm and changeable friction welding parameter was friction welding area.

  • This paper deals with determining the proper friction welding condition and analyzing mechanical in of friction welded joints of sintered carbide tool materials (SKNM50 for the blade part of press punch) to alloy steel (SCM440 for the shank part of press punch), the alloy steel to aluminum(A6061 for the interlayer material between the blade part and the shank) and sintered carbide tool materials to aluminum. And also acoustic emission test will be carried out during fiction welding to evaluate the weld quality.

  • A study of friction welding of high speed steel(SKH51) bar for blade side to carbon steel(STC3) bar for shank side was carried out experimentally through tensile test, hardness lest, microstructure, and acoustic emission (AR) test.   • The friction welding has more technical and economic advantages than the other welding processes. As this welding process has the characteristics such as curtailment of production time, materials, cost reduction, etc., it has been widely used in production of various mechanical components which have complex shapes. So, this paper deals with optimizing the friction welding conditions and analyzing various mechanical properties of the friction welded joints of torsion bar material SUP9A bar to bar. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) The quantitative relation between heating time($t_{1}$, sec) and total upset(U, mm)can be obtained. The empirical formula obtained is ; U = 3.29$t_{1}$ + 1.6 2) The tensile strength($\sigma_{t}$, kgf/$mm^{2}$) of friction welding joints as post weld heat treated(PWHT) depends upon heating time($t_{1}$, sec) quantitatively and the empirical formula obtained is ; $\sigma$= -5.1$t_{1}\;^{2}$+44.90$t_{1}$+45.2 3) It is certain that the optimum condition for friction welded joints of SUP9A steel bars of diameter 14.5mm is, considering on various properties such as tensile strength, torsional strength, impact energy and strain of the joints after PWTH ; n = 2000rpm, $P_{1}$=8kgf/$mm^{2}$, $P_{2}$=20kgf/$mm^{2}$, $t_{1}$=4sec, $t_{2}$=3sec 4) The tensile strength, torsional strength and hardness were increased with the increased with the increasing carbon equivalent, but toughness was decreased.

  • This study was performed to optimize friction welding conditions of Cr-Mo steel bars used for hydraulic of pneumatic valve spools and to realize the real-time evaluation of weld quality by acoustic emission method. SNCM220, SCM435, SCAM645, and SCM415 steel bars were tested to find optimum conditions of friction welding. Auantitative equations which exhibit the relations of tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area and energy absorption with friction heating time were obtained by the experiment. Acoustic emission was also performed in the friction weldig process, and the real-time evaluation was enabled to find the optimum range of weld strength. Finally, the strength and toughness of welded joints were interpreted by the sem analysis of tensile fracture surfaces.

  • The microstructural change associated with the hardness profile in friction stir welded, age-hardenable 6005 Al alloy had been evaluated. Frictional heat and plastic flow during friction stir welding created the fine recrystallized grain (Stir Zone, SZ), the elongated and recovered grain (Thermo-Mechanical Affected Zone, TMAZ) in the weld zone. Heat affected zone (HAZ), which could be only identified by hardness test because there is no difference in the grain structure compared with that of the base metal, was formed beside the weld zone. A softened region had been formed near the weld zone during friction stir welding process. The softened region was characterized by the dissolution and coarsening of the strengthening precipitate during the friction stir welding. The sound joints of 6005 Al alloys were successfully formed under a wide range of the friction stir welding conditions.

  • In this study, the friction welding experiment was performed by using the design of experiment. And the signal data acquired by acoustic emission sensor were analyzed to predict the tensile strength of friction welding part at friction welding process for AZ31 magnesium alloy. A dimensionless coefficient($\phi_{AE}$), which consisted in the square of AE rms and variance, was defined as the characteristic of friction welding and the prediction equation was obtained by using linear regression. As the result of analysis, it was seen that the correlation between predicted and measured values became very close and on-line prediction of the ensile strength was possible in friction welding part.

  • Dissimilar joining of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy to aluminum 5083-O alloy was performed using friction-stir welding technique. The mechanical properties, hardness, macro- and micro-structure on dissimilar friction-stir-weld aluminium alloy were investigated. Mechanical properties of the weld mainly depend on which Al alloy is placed at the retreating sides of the rotating tool respectively during dissimilar friction-stir weld because the microstructure of stir zone was mainly composed of welded Al alloys of the retreating side. Onion ring pattern was observed like lamella structure stacked by each Al alloy in turn. It apparently results in defect-free weld zone that traverse speed was changed to 124 mm/min under conditions of tool rotation speed like 1250 rpm with 5 mm of tool's prove diameter, 4.5 mm of prove length, 20 mm of shoulder diameter, and $2^{\circ}$ of tilting angle. The 231 MPa of ultimate stress and the 121 MPa of yield point are obtained about the friction-stir-welded Al 6061-T6(AS) to Al 5083-O(RS).

A Study on Insert Metal in Friction Welding of A2024 to SM45C (마찰용접에서 A2024와 SM45C의 삽입재에 관한 연구)

  • This study was investigated on the friction welding of A2024 aluminum alloy to SM45C carbon steel with insert metals. The tensile strength of welded joints, the hardness distribution of welds, the microstructure of welds and the tensile fracture surfaces were mainly investigated through this experiment. When aluminum alloy A6351 was used as insert metal, the maximum tensile strength of welded joint was obtained. In this case, the maximum joint efficiency was 76.2 percent of base metal. Optimal welding conditions were N=2,000rpm. $P_1$=40MPa, $P_2$, $t_1$=1.5 sec, $t_2$=5 sec.
