Nuclear fuels are always exposed to hot temperature and high speed coolant flow during the reactor operation. Thus the fuel rod accompanies small amplitude vibration due to the turbulent flow. The random vibration causes friction between the fuel rod and the grid structure which provides the lateral supports. The friction is critical to the fuel rod fretting wear, and it degrades fuel performance when a severe wear is developed. LuGre friction model is introduced in the paper, and the performance was evaluated comparing to the classical Coulomb model. It is shown that the developed friction force considering the Coulomb friction is not enough to stop or delay the motion while the stick-slip can be simulated using LuGre friction model. Numerical solutions of the two dimensional spacer grid cell model with the modern friction are also reviewed, and it is discussed that the new friction model simulates well the nonlinear mechanism.

Numerical methods are procured for evaluating the contact stresses, the dissipation of friction energy density and the fatigue cracking emanated from the contact surface under the partial slip condition. A rounded punch is used for the indenter pressing and slipping on the elastic half plane. Plane strain condition is assumed for the present analysis. Several sample calculations are carried out to investigate the effect of the punch roundness, the shear load path, and the crack obliquity and closure on the failure. It is found that the present methods can be a useful tool for studying the physical failure of the of the contacting materials such as fretting wear and fretting fatigue cracking.

In this study, a nano-colloidal silica sol was applied to control the anti-slip property by spraying on kraft paper. Two kinds of nano-colloidal silica sol which have cationic and anionic charge were applied in kraft paper, and the friction and physical strength properties of kraft paper were investigated. The application of colloidal silica sol on wet web in wet-end process by spraying method was tried to improve the friction property and to avoid the general problems of machine contaminations caused by the scattering of sprayed silica particles in dryer part. The physical properties of sheet were also improved by the application of wet web spraying method, and the optimum conditions of wet web spraying operation were closely related with the conditions of pH and electrical charge of wet web and silica sol.

This paper proposes a CMAC-based controller for servo systems with stick-slip friction. Performance of the controller was evaluated from computer simulations and compared with that of a conventional PID controller. Firction model used in the simulations is based upon the one proposed by Tustin. It was shown that the CMAC-based controller settles more quickly, and overshoots less than the PID. It was also shown that the CMAC is less sensitive to the changes of the plant parameters.

A prediction model on forward slip has been developed for presetting rolling speed of each finish mill stand in the continuous hot strip roduction. Those factors such as neutral point, friction coefficient, volume fractions undergoing width spread, shape of deformation zone at each side of entry and delivery of the rolls were taken into account. To reduce the speed unbalance between adjacent stands a refining method of adjusting friction coefficient has also been developed. On-line application of the model showed a good agreement in rolling speeds between the predictions and the actual measurements, and gave an outstanding improvement in the travelling stability of strip passing through the finishing mill train.
Forward slip is an important parameter often used in rolling-speed control models for tandem hot strip rolling mills. In a hot strip mill, on-line measurement of strip speed is inherently very difficult. Therefore, for the set-up of the finishing mill, a forward slip model is used to calculate the strip speed from roll circumferential velocity at each mill stand. Due to its complexity, most previous researches have used semi-empirical methods in determining values for the forward slip. Although these investigations may be useful in process design and control, they do not have a theoretical basis. In the present study, a better forward slip model has been developed, which provides for a better set-up and more precise control of the mill. Factors such as neutral point, friction coefficient, width spread, shape of deformation zone in the roll bite are incorporated into the model. Implementation of the new forward slip model for the control of a 7-stand hot strip tandem rolling mill shows significant improvement in roll speed set-up accuracy.

Grunt(stick-slip) noise happens between rear lining and drum on braking condition while vehicle is returning to steady position after nose-dive. The study presents a new testing and analysis methods for improving brake grunt noise on vehicle. Grunt noise is called a kind of stick slip noise with below 1 kHz frequency that is caused by the surfaces alternating between sticking to each other and sliding over each other with a corresponding change in friction force. This noise is typically come from that the static friction coefficient of surfaces is much higher than the kinetic friction coefficient. For the identification of the excitation mechanism and improvement of grunt noise, it is necessary to study variable parameters of rear drum brake systems on vehicle and to implement CAE analysis with stick slip model of drum brake. The aim of this study has been to find solution parameters throughout test result on vehicle and dynamo test. As a result of this study, it is generated from stick slip between rear lining and rear drum and it can be solved to reduce contact angle of lining with asymmetric and is effected not only brake drum strength but also rear brake size and brake factor.
In field fabrication of steel members, the oversize hole is frequently required due to reaming and mismatching. But, there are no provisions and investigations about oversize hole in the Korean specifications. So, in this study, the tension test of friction type high-tention bolted joints is performed with parameters of bolt hole size, surface treatment and tightening force, and investigate the effect of slip behavior with those parameters. From the results, the enough tightening force is needed to obtain some degree slip load in shot blast treatment case, although tightening force is reduced somewhat, it is no problem to guarantee slip load in zincrich primer case. The slip behavior of joints with oversize hole(26mm) is similar to the slip behavior of joints with hole of nominal size.

A new algorithm based upon TDC (Time Delay Control) is proposed to improve the robustness of TDC performance in systems where the stick-slip friction is strong. Experiments were performed at the different levels of friction. The reponses of the TDC and the modified TDC were compared each other, and against those of a PID controller with an anti-windup. The results show that the TDC and the modified TDC equally perform better than the PID, and that the modified TDC performs consistently well even with variations in the friction level while the TDC does not.
