In machine tools, frictional force exists between the table and the bed, and in ballscrews. In this paper, feed motor current is used to measure the motor torque and frictional force. A hall sensor is used to measure the feed motor current. Some frictional pheonomina in feed drice systems, such as, the relationship between feedrate and frictional force, lubrication conditions and frictional force, and feed direction and frictional force, are obtained. Generally, the friction behavior is in good agreement with Stribeck's curve. However, the data shows significant scatter when feedrate is high.
This paper presents a study on successive approximation measurement of mechanical parameters for motor control system. At the first step of servo system installation, control system gain tuning is troublesome work. Recently, autotuning method of motion controller for motor drive system is based on parameter measurement and identification. On the case of first order mechanical system (mechanical parameters are modified by simple inertia and friction), it is necessary for good response to get the accurate measurement or identification of the mechanical parameters . In this paper, novel method applies the binary successive approximation measurement to the inertia and friction coefficient. Computer simulation and experiment for the proposed method will show verification of accuracy and usefulness.

The effect of particulate contamination on friction and wear between a negative-pressure picoslider and a laser-textured disk was studied. Particles of different concentrations, materials and sizes were injected to the head-disk interface (HDI), consisting of disks with various textures, at the same speed. In a contaminated environment, durability of head-disk interface gradually decreased as the particle concentration increased. Large particles caused HDI failure early and resulted in an extensive damage to the slider and disk surfaces. Hard particles also caused HDI failure earlier and damages more extensive than soft ones. Based on the test results, mechanisms of HDI failure with picoslider were presented.
Water-lubrication ball bearings are required to install in aqueous medium where water is used as coolant or working fluid. However water-lubricated frictional characteristics of stainless steel ball bearing is not will known compared to oil-lubricated frictional characteristics. Furthermore study on friction at high temperature is rare because bearing maintenance strategy for water-lubricated or chemicals-lubricated bearings of equipment is mostly based on change of failed bearings and parts. Ball bearings and ball screws are used to transmit power in the control rod drive mechanism for an integral reactor and are lubricated with high temperature and high pressure chemically-controlled water. Bearings and power transmitting mechanical elements for a nuclear reactor require high reliability and high performance during estimated lifetime, and their performance should be verified. In this paper, experimental research results of frictional characteristics of water-lubricated ball bearing are reported.

Belt tension distribution for an abrasive blet grinding was investigated analytically and experimentally for (1) slack side and (2) tight side blet grinding. Classical Eytelwein equation was used to predict the belt tension distribution with dividing contact angles into (1) inactive and (2) active angles. General friction theory was modified based on the friction force between the belt and the support in the grinding contact area that was obtained by experiments. It was found that analytical results were in good agreement with the experimental results. Also, the tight side belt grinding was recommended since it could carry out more grinding load than that of slack side belt grinding.

This paper describes the design, construction, and fundamental testing of a precision rotational device that utilizes piezoelectric elements as a source of driving force and impact drive mechanism as a driving principle. A novel device structure is designed and the numerical simulations about the static displacement, stress distribution, and mode shape of the designed structure are performed. A fabricated rotational device has been rotated successfully by applying saw-shaped voltages to the piezoelectric elements. The one-step rotational angle was $0.44{\times}10^{-3}$ rad at the applied voltages of 80V. The angular velocities of the device were revealed to be increased as the driving frequency and voltage were respectively increased and the preload was decreased. The device has a feature that it can be translated as well as rotated. An experimental result shows that the device was translated by ${\pm}4.56{\mu}m$ maximum when the 120V sinusoidal voltages with a phase difference of $180^{\circ}$ were respectively supplied to two piezoelectric elements.

Recently, in the manufacturing process of flat panel displays, mass production methods of inline system has been emerged. In particular the next generation OLED display manufacturing process, horizontal inline evaporation process has been tried. It is important for the success of OLED inline evaporation process to develop a magnetic levitation transport system capable of transferring a carrier equipped with a mother glass with high accuracy without any physical contact along the rail under vacuum condition. In the case of existing wheel-based transfer system, it is not suitable for OLED evaporation process requiring high cleanliness. On the other hand, the magnetic levitation transport system has an advantage that it does not generate any dust and it is possible to achieve high-precision control because there are not non-linear factors such as friction force. In this paper, we introduce the high-precision magnetic levitation transport system, which is currently under development, for OLED evaporation process.

The dynamic response of the head arm assembly (HAA) of a hard disk drive to an impact load was obtained from a 3D non-linear finite element model using ANSYS/LS-DYNA and from experiments using a modified levitation mass method (LMM). In the finite element model, the impact load was created by modeling the mass as a rigid body and making it collide with the HAA. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were then obtained from the time history data of the finite element analysis. In the LMM, a mass that was levitated with an aerostatic linear bearing, and hence encountered negligible friction, was made to collide with the actuator arm, resulting in a dynamic bending test for the arm. During the collision, the Doppler frequency shift of the laser beam reflected from the mass was accurately measured with an optical interferometer. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were accurately calculated from the measured time-varying Doppler frequency shift. A good correlation between the experimental data and FEA results was observed. The FEA was also used to investigate the dynamic response of the HAA to impact by different masses.

In this work, a precies actuator which is capable of high positioning accuracy is developed. For estimation the dynamic behavior of the actuator, system modeling is performed by employing a stick-slip frection law. Dynamic characteristics over various types of driving input signals and vibraiton loci of the driving tip are examined by experiments. Phase differences between the input signals are applied, and the dynamic behavior of slider is investigated. From the simulation and experimental results, it is observed that the dynamic behaviors from the simulation results agree fairly well to those of the experimental results. Thisindicates that the model developed in this work is applicable to other precision mechanisms in which a friction farce is as improtant factor for actuation.
