This study investigates the possibility of reducing squeal noise generated at the contact point between an elastomer and glass by using the properties of a magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) whose stiffness changes with the application of a magnetic field. Previously, squeal noise was mainly observed in the unstable section caused by the weakening of friction due to velocity. Previous studies have shown that squeal noise decreases as the stiffness increases. Accordingly, this study is conducted to control the unstable area of the friction curve and to reduce the noise by inducing the stiffness change of the MRE by applying a magnetic field. The friction, vibration, and noise characteristics are measured using a reciprocating friction tester. The frequency ranges of vibration and noise measured with the accelerometer and sound sensor show similar results. When a magnetic field is applied to the MRE, there is significantly lower noise compared with the case without the application of the magnetic field. The average coefficient of friction decreases with the application of the magnetic field. The maximum coefficient of friction increases rapidly at the turning point and decreases when the magnetic field is applied. This shows that the mechanical properties of the MRE change due to the magnetic field, and the noise and friction coefficient also decrease.
For a mobile robot that travels along a terrain consisting of various geology, information on tire force and friction coefficient between ground and wheel is an important factor. In order to estimate the lateral force between ground and wheel, a lot of information about the model and the surrounding environment of the vehicle is required in conventional method. Therefore, in this paper, we are going to estimate lateral force through simple model (Minimal Argument Lateral Slip Curve, MALSC) using only minimum data with high estimation accuracy and to improve estimation reliability of the friction coefficient by using the estimated lateral force data. Simulation is carried out to analyze the correlation between the longitudinal and transverse friction coefficients and slip angles to design the simplified lateral force estimation model by analysing simulation data and to apply it to the actual field environment. In order to verify the validity of the equation, estimation results are compared with the conventional method through simulation. Also, the results of the lateral force and friction coefficient estimation are compared from both the conventional method and the proposed model through the actual robot running experiments.

The present study provides the numerical results in association with caliper stiffness and friction curve. From the numerical results, it is concluded that the pad vibration modes with dominant displacement in rotation direction is sensitive in the flutter instability. Particularly, the pad rigid mode is shown to become the squeal mode when the caliper stiffness is introduced in brake squeal model. Therefore, the caliper contact stiffness between the pad and caliper is expected to contribute to the squeal modes of the brake pad.

In machine tools, frictional force exists between the table and the bed, and in ballscrews. In this paper, feed motor current is used to measure the motor torque and frictional force. A hall sensor is used to measure the feed motor current. Some frictional pheonomina in feed drice systems, such as, the relationship between feedrate and frictional force, lubrication conditions and frictional force, and feed direction and frictional force, are obtained. Generally, the friction behavior is in good agreement with Stribeck's curve. However, the data shows significant scatter when feedrate is high.
The mean-line method using empirical models is the most practical method of predicting off-design performance. To gain insight into the empirical models, the influence of empirical models on the performance prediction results is investigated. We found that, in the two-zone model, the secondary flow mass fraction has a considerable effect at high mass flow-rates on the performance prediction curves. In the TEIS model, the first element changes the slope of the performance curves as well as the stable operating range. The second element makes the performance curves move up and down as it increases or decreases. It is also discovered that the slip factor affects pressure ratio, but it has little effect on efficiency. Finally, this study reveals that the skin friction coefficient has significant effect on both the pressure ratio curve and the efficiency curve. These results show the limitations of the present empirical models, and more resonable empirical models are reeded.

Structures with additional frictional damping system have strong nonlinearity that the dynamic behavior is highly affected. by the relative magnitude between frictional force and excitation load. In this study, normalized response spectra of the structures with non-dimensional friction force are obtained through nonlinear time history analyses of the mass-normalized single degree of freedom systems using 20 ground motion data recorded on rock site. The variation of the control performance of frictional damping system is investigated in terms of the dynamic load and the structural natural period, of which effects were not considered in the previous studies. Least square curve fitting equations are presented for describing those normalized response spectrum and optimal non-dimensional friction forces are obtained for controlling the peak displacement and absolute acceleration of the structure based on the derivative of the curve fitted design spectrum.

A clutch hydraulic system for automotive manual transmissions transfers hydraulic pressure generated by driver's pedal manipulation to the clutch mechanism. The foot effort when the clutch pedal is pushed is different than that when the clutch is returned. The effort or load difference, called hysteresis, is caused by the friction produced between rubber seal and inner wall inside the hydraulic cylinder. This clutch pedal travel foot effort hysteresis is essential for a clutch hydraulic system design and analysis. The dynamic model for a clutch hydraulic system is developed and a simulation analysis is performed to estimate the fiction coefficient as a function of the cylinder pressure. The simulation result is then compared to the measurements obtained from a clutch hydraulic system tester to ensure the reliability of the dynamic model and the coefficients estimated. Also the estimated friction coefficients at various pressure values are compared to those reported by an independent study.

Squeak noise is studied by using the pin-on-disk system with aluminum pin and steel disk. Noise induced by friction is measured with respect to the normal loads and sliding speeds. The negative slope of friction-velocity curve is seen when the squeak noise occurs. It is found that the normal load influences on the sound level of squeak noise. From the hammering test, the major frequency of the squeak noise is shown to correspond to one of system modes, which implies that squeak phenomenon arises from the unstable system modes. The result of FE analysis shows that the major squeak mode is the bending mode of the pin.

This paper theoretically analyzed the relations between the out-put braking torque and the wheel cylinder pressure in the leading-trailing drum brake for heavy duty truck as the characteristics of friction in break lining, comparing with the results derived from full-scale inertial brake dynamometer test in actual braking condition to develop reliable brake system in extensive using conditions. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The characteristic curve representing the relations between BEF (Brake Effectiveness Factor) and Friction coefficient derived from theoretical analysis are consistent with the experimental results of dynamometer test. 2) According to the results of dynamometer test, the friction coefficient of brake lining is subject to initial brake speed and the actual using temperature in brake system.
