  • A taxonomic study was carried out on the freshwater copepods of Order Calanoida from Korean during the period from May, 1983 to November, 1984. Materials consist of both specimens deposited at the Department of Biology, Kangreung National University and the specimens collected from various freshwater regions (excluding the subterranean waters) such as rivers, lakes, ponds, bogs, ricefields, etc. during this period. As a result of examining the specimens collected at the 26 localities in South Korea, 8 species of 3 families were identified, of which 4 species are newly known from Korea ; Sinocalanus sinensis (Poppe, 1889) ; Tropodiaptomus oryzanus Kiefer , 1937 ; Sinodiaptomus sarsi (Rylov, 1923) ; Neodiaptomus schemackeri(Poppe et Richard, 1892).

  • The Antarctic freshwater copepod, Boeckella poppei (Mrazek, 1901), has the widest range of distribution extending from southern South America to Antarctic continent, among all Boeckella species. Boeckella poppei is the only freshwater copepod known to be inhabiting the Antarctic continent. In present study, we analyzed the DNA barcodes of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of B. poppei from King George Island, Antarctica. The intraspecific genetic distances varied from 0% to 13% and interspecific genetic distances ranged from 11% to 14%. The overlap of DNA barcode gap suggests careful threshold-based delimitation of species boundaries.

  • The genus of Pseudodiaptomus Herrick, 1884 presently comprises 74 species worldwide extending freshwater to hypersaline water(Walter, 2002). Of these, the post-embryonic developments of their naupliar and copepodid stages have been reported in only eight species: P euryhalinus, P. cornatus, P. richardi inequalis, P. marinus, P. binghami, P. poplesia, P. aurivilli and P. hessei.
